KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! With the celebration of its 50th anniversary, the Millennium era comes to a close with a zany, over-the-top, campy AF film that pays tribute to a lot of the franchise until that point. We got those Aliens with their cool eyeglasses things (which they actually remove), and we got about every Kaiju in the series. We got Mothra. We got Ghidorah, whom Goji whips out of existence with a beam. We got Goji Jr. being not that annoying and SPOILER but finally getting to use his beam powers properly (no hero poses ☹). We got that ant-gigantic thing or whatever that controlled water. We got that cool kaiju who descended down. We even get the American female…

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 45 of 46 This movie is too crazy not to love. I mean, this is truly some glorious madness. It’s essentially a batshit crazy, live-action anime that combines a Japanese X-men knockoff with a remake of Destroy All Monsters, and even throws in a dash of The Matrix. It’s also the main reason to watch all of the Godzilla-related Toho films in addition to the ones that feature Godzilla. This film references and/or includes elements from dozens of films, including stuff like Gorath and Atragon. It also includes a metric fuckton of kaiju, even going so far as to include the 1998 American Godzilla (aka Zilla). Hell, there’s even an upgraded version of Gigan with dual…

A Walk Amongst Monsters #89 “One who depends on power, will be ruined by it.” You mean to tell me Godzilla demolishes his shitty American counterpart to a fucking Sum 41 song? What I wouldn’t give to have been in the writers room when they decided that. Final Wars marked 50 years of Godzilla. Half a decade of the King of the Monsters dominating pop culture. It’s no surprise they decided to go all out before he would once again go dormant. This is simply a celebration of Godzilla and Toho. A loving sendoff that honors what came before. It’s apparent from it’s opening credits where we see a timeline showcasing Godzilla’s history and many variations. Most of the fanservice…

seeing this amazing film in 2005 in a crowded chicago theater jam-packed full of hyped godzilla fans was the greatest cinematic experience of my entire life; when we first saw the godzilla vs. american zilla fight, the sheer volume of that audience’s reaction to that scene could have shattered glass.

I was curious to know if watching GODZILLA: FINAL WARS after going through the Godzilla franchise would lessen or heighten the experience. Good news! It only got better. I became acutely aware of how loving a tribute it is. The structure, the characters and the storytelling are all share the same DNA with everything that’s come before – from the presence of the reporter and scientist, the non-actor American lead, the alien invasion plot, and the sheer joy of spectacle is pure Showa-era fun. There’s even a UN Space Council, a pause to reflect on why Godzilla does what he does, and references to seemingly every Toho Kaiju film ever made. Even YOG: MONSTER FROM SPACE makes a brief stock…

0/5 Godzilla: Final Wars is a pastiche in the same sense that my bowel movements are a pastiche of everything I’ve eaten earlier in the day.

And exactly how do you think Jet Jaguar felt when he found out even Sgt. Slaughter was invited to Godzilla’s 50th anniversary big dumb kaiju orgy? Even Minilla got to watch from afar. Even Minilla. 👀

Why did they call it Final Wars if Godzilla comes back for more movies? Are they stupid?
