The dynamic duo of Riggs and Murtaugh return for another adventure, and by this point you can feel the Lethal Weapon formula wearing a bit thin, despite Richard Donner’s best efforts to keep things fresh. The complete absence of any story input from Shane Black doesn’t really help either. After stupidly attempting to disarm a bomb and knocking a whole building down, LAPD detectives Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh (who is a week away from retirement) are demoted to patrol as punishment. After foiling an armored car theft, the two stumble upon an arms-trafficking plot run by former LAPD lieutenant Jack Travis. As Riggs and Murtaugh are returned to their original positions, they do their usual stuff to try and…

JOE PESCI WITH BLEACH BLONDE HAIR! JOE PESCI WITH BLEACH BLONDE HAIR! What a funny little dude.👱🏼‍♂️😆 This one is notably more sitcom-y🙃 than the first 2 but as a sitcom fan, I love it.💗 Renee Russo is a great additon to the franchise. It was about time they added a kickass women to counteract all the testosterone.😎💅🏻 These movies have the best soundtracks ever🎶. We get Sting AND Elton John in this one.🔥🔥🔥 The only knock I have against it is the random 20 minute detour where Murtaugh kills an armed child and has a mental breakdown. It’s so tense & bleak💀 that it’s jarring that they go back to wacky action hijinks afterwards.😬 Still, I’ll always adore these characters even if this is the worst one.🤷‍♀️ IT’S JOE PESCI WITH BLEACH BLONDE HAIR!

Literally half the plot of this one is “And then the crooks do more crimes 50 feet from Riggs and Murtaugh in broad daylight.” It happens over and over! The heroes get busted down to patrolmen, then stumble on an armored car robbery on their very day walking the beat. They go to get a hamburger and Riggs finds a gang of teenagers with automatic weapons. Better yet, the two cases are connected! Inspector Clouseau could have solved this mystery. By far, my favorite part of Lethal Weapon 3 are the tasty guitar riffs by Eric Clapton and the even tastier sax licks by David Sanborn every time Riggs and Murtaugh do something wacky — which happens constantly. We’re talking…

100-word review: Three films in I’m beginning to notice the trend of these Lethal Weapon movies growing more and more hyperactive; Martin and Roger are even more unhinged than in the previous movies, and their unhealthy coping mechanisms (which this entry seems to focus on in particular) become worse too. Like, what’s up with that scar-comparison-leading-into-fade-to-black-sex-scene? Or the random character of Dolores? Or anything featuring Joe Pesci who they brought back for some godforsaken reason… Also, that sultry sax and occasional acoustic guitar soundtrack starts to become a parody of itself at this point. Part of my August 2022 80s & 90s Cop Franchises challenge; 17th out of 18 films.

“No, I’m chaos and he’s mayhem. We’re a double act.” I sincerely love this cartoon because not only are they the worst police officers on earth (pulling a gun on the jaywalker is an all-timer), but in this one they’re also idiots. It’ss like a relatively incredibly polished Terence Hill/Bud Spencer movie. But oh man the attempt, even clumsier and more po-faced here than in part 2, to lend these films some kind of social conscience is just poison. It’s a hypocritical buzzkill apology for all the fun excessive force and Riggs the Dog Whisperer. You know how they recklessly blow up that building at the beginning? Well they show up when a second building explodes after the end credits, and I’ve always imagined the other LETHAL WEAPON movie about the pursuit of a mad bomber that was happening parallel to this one. I don’t care how lazy or stupid these are, I could watch a hundred of them.

The third outing for Riggs and Murtagh dials down the grittiness and dials up the comedy. It actually works rather well. Lethal Weapon 3 is fast paced and almost constantly amusing. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover have the same great chemistry as in the previous two films and here are joined by a returning Joe Pesci (with bleached blonde hair) and Rene Russo as an internal affairs officer and later love interest for Gibson. The plot is something to do with an enterprising ex-police lieutenant who is now running some kind of hybrid real estate and gun stealing business. It doesn’t make a lot of sense but it doesn’t really matter. The plot of course gives plenty of reason for…

Riggs visits Murtaugh on his boat. Murtaugh is full of guilt — and scotch. The two have a poignant discussion that gradually turns into an argument when Murtaugh, six days from retirement, says he wishes “the accident” had happened to anyone but him. Riggs understands Murtaugh’s point but calls him out for his selfishness. Not only is Murtaugh selfish for wishing the worst on his best friend, but he also fails to realize that his retirement would take away the only family Riggs has ever had. The two cops fight, end up in the water, and the scene ends with a hilarious punchline. I won’t spoil it, but it’s easily one of the top five smartest quotes in the franchise.…

Our boys are back for a third outing, but we sadly do not go 3 for 3 with perfect action movies. They turned the dial up too much on Gibson’s Rigs character. He’s flirting with caricature of a character that was already zany and over the top. The action here doesn’t have the same draw. However, the chemistry between Gibbs and Glover is still undeniable. Murtaugh’s family is charming as ever. Seeing Murtaugh have some struggles with keeping it together…

Underrated sequel. Though lighter in tone to its predecessors, it eases up on using Joe Pesci for the laughs, relying more on the leads. The introduction of Rene Russo as Lorna Cole is an excellent addition to the cast, creating a great foil for Riggs.

So many things in this movie don’t make any sense. Why do Riggs and Murtaugh randomly come across all the criminals when they’re not even looking for them? Why is Joe Pesci still tagging along? Why is Mel Gibson’s hair sometimes in a ponytail? What the fuck was that dog scene? It all still rocks.

The franchise took a decline with this one—the performances are too dialed-up, the plot absurd, and the villains uninteresting. A movie like this isn’t supposed to be a realistic police procedural, but there needs to be some plausibility to the events for it to work. Unlike the first two films, Donner relies too heavily on the set pieces and action sequences to carry the film. Don’t get me wrong, they are impressive, but they can’t carry the movie alone.

This has pretty good chemistry – obviously Murtaugh and Riggs, but Rene Russo adds a butt-kicking internal affairs officer into the mix (not to mention the perennially annoying but occasionally funny Joe Pesci as Leo Getz). Plot’s decent, most of the action good if slightly unbelievable, but its the more-or-less continuous stream of wisecracks that really fuels the whole franchise after the first film.

These movies are fun, dumb, and by this point mostly running on the fact that Mel Gibson and Danny Glover are really fucking good together. Lethal Weapon 3 feels like a franchise that’s treading water. Despite it always being cool that they blow up the old Orlando city hall to open the film, this is the ‘worst’ of the four movies. Particularly because the bad guys are the weakest. It’s still a great film, Russo’s addition is fantastic.

  35. V
    Vlad P 8 月 18, 2026

Adding Rene Russo to this franchise was the best move they could have made. Lorna Cole is every bit as reckless and bruised as Riggs, and their scar-comparison scene is an ingenious way of turning their mutual bodily damage into the sexiest foreplay. She immediately fits into the ensemble without disrupting what already works between Gibson and Glover, while Murtaugh accidentally killing his son’s friend provides the movie with some genuine emotional weight, something this series was tremendously good at.…

I think Part 2 set me up to like Part 3 more. LW2 leaned too heavy into the comedy for me. LW3 was a solid balance of both comedy and action, but also really focusing on the chemistry and relationships of Riggs/Murtaugh and Riggs/Lorna Cole. The first half hour or so is just letting the audience get right back into the groove of things with Riggs and Murtaugh. That was the correct choice. We didn’t need to set up the…

Due to how constantly it would get played on Encore when I was a kid, this one is somehow the Lethal Weapon entry I grew up on. It’s probably the worst one but still a lot of fun. What a downgrade after the two previous movies. Here it’s all about comedy and goofy situtations without much link between the scenes. Everything is rushed. The only well made part is about Roger killing a friend of his son, it was one year after Boyz in the hood and it was a good idea but it felt drowned in a ocean of basic action/comedy scenes. Only worth the rewatch due to lovable cast and great chemistry between them.

Almost none of the jokes land (Joe Pesci excepted) but by taking Riggs and Murtaugh’s chemistry and pushing it into increasingly over-the-top action setpieces, you end up with something that’s entertaining almost in spite of how much the screenplay fails at creating humor or an interesting story. I think this really just gets an extra half-star for Stuart Wilson’s performance at the arms dealing ex-cop villain. He’s got something about him!

The dynamic between Riggs and Murtaugh is still there, and there are plenty of great moments, but this one just doesn’t quite hit the same heights as the first two. Leo is back and while he was a great comedic punching bag in the second film, I think they leaned into him a little too heavily in the first half here. Still a good time, just not quite as sharp, funny, or memorable as the first two.

Murtaugh had one hell of a “retirement” week. A bit long winded but overall a vast improvement over 2. Hearing Murtaugh & Riggs argue like an old married couple never gets old. I also rolled my eyes when I seen Joe Pesci name appear in the opening credits usually one of my favorites in any movie he’s in. His character in this and 2 was extremely annoying and it was super weird to see him with blonde hair. Either why I’m excited to see how this franchise ends with 4 funny how it began in the late 80’s and ended in the late 90’s.

This is a consistent series, even if this is a step down from the first two films. It’s missing the crackling spark of Black’s dialogue, but the pairing of Gibson and Glover continues to work like gangbusters. Take a shot every time Glover yells RIGGS and you’ll be comatose before the second act. The writing is the weak point here, with a lot of plot contrivances and a story not as strong as the first two films, but it excels…

“Another baby.” A goofy action comedy romp that is also an elegy for young souls lost too soon. Bit of a laid back season 7 episode of some long running cop show but sometimes that’s all you need. And when Donner does lock in, you get GUY GETTING GASOLINE THROWN ON HIM AND THEY SHOOT THE GASOLINE AS ITS STILL AIRBORNE. Also there’s a massive probably very expensive explosion hidden after the credits.

Lethal Weapon 3 is one of those sequels where you can tell the filmmakers are trying to keep the same formula alive, but the magic from the first two movies just isn’t quite there anymore. It’s still entertaining, and there are definitely some great moments, but compared to the original Lethal Weapon and Lethal Weapon 2, this feels more like a comfortable rehash than a necessary continuation. The biggest strength is still the chemistry between Mel Gibson and Danny Glover.…

Somehow in the last 30+ years I’ve never gotten around to seeing Lethal Weapon 3 (or 4!), which is absolutely crazy considering how much I love the first two. The complete absence of Shane Black’s writing is definitely noticeable and a lot of the attempts at comedy fall a bit flat. Murtaugh’s “I’m too old for this shit” routine starts to wear very thin, especially considering Danny Glover was only 46 when this was released. And bringing back Leo Getz…

The pure chaotic charisma of Mel Gibson is the only thing that makes this thing enjoyable. The movie is just a series of unconnected, unhinged encounters that Mel has that the studio just strung together into a plot that makes zero sense. The dog scene was my favorite. Don’t think they even bothered writing a script. All the actors are clearly just winging it. It’s honestly a travesty that Hollywood deprived us of his presence for the crime of being…

It delivers all the goods you’d expect from the franchise, very well perhaps, but not too much more on a story or character level. Mel Gibson and Danny Glover still have a strong dynamic as Riggs and Murtaugh, Joe Pesci is hilarious as Leo Getz, and Rene Russo is a solid addition to the cast. It’s funny and has some good action scenes, but it cares too little about its story.

Though I appreciated the continuation of that cheesy saxophone- and guitar-heavy score here, I can’t say I enjoyed this installment in the LW series very much at all. 3 leaned really hard into the *wink wink, nudge nudge* gimmick that sequels can fall prey to (Oceans 12 is a good example). Also, Mel Gibson had much better chemistry with Patsy Kensit for 2 than with Rene Russo for 3. It seemed to me that Rene was cast solely to get butts in seats at the expense of any believability in her connection with Mel, and the movie suffered because of it.

It feels like the series forgot what made the first two movies great. The action is still there, and some of the chases and explosions are fun, but everything else feels watered down. Riggs and Murtaugh have gone from complicated, rough-edged characters to cartoon versions of themselves, surrounded by dumb jokes and family drama. The movie could’ve done something much more interesting with its story, but instead it takes the safest possible route and piles on bigger gunfights and louder…

I rewatched Lethal Weapon 1 and 2 ahead of filling in this, my only gap in the franchise, which was probably unnecessary and also did no favors for this movie, which fully reduces Riggs and Murtaugh to cartoon versions of their personas, and boasts a dull nonsense plot and boring villain. The climactic action sequence is a banger though, so points for that.

The stylish, iconic action series involving mismatched LA cops is now verging fairly close to being on autopilot, with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover finding themselves once again investigating (while busted all the way down to traffic duty) a single crime that once again balloons wildly out of control, this time concentrating on a crooked cop who’s willingly gotten himself into business with dangerous gangs. The kind of business can cause its fair share of damage and trouble. This cinematic…

The Sting/Eric Clapton song that opens this Bond-style is hilariously shitty. The progression of this franchise is certainly an interesting one. The first movie is a no-holds-barred classic, with the bursts of action and violence feeling like they have real consequences, as well as comedy that’s funny but never feels at the expense of the characters’ dramatic traits. 2026 #783 More of the same from the second one. There’s a pretty great highway chase sequence, as is the third act fight in a housing build, and Rene Russo makes for a welcome addition to the cast. Plus, it’s good to have Joe Pesci back in the mix as well. The plot is just kinda there, but as long as we get to see Gibson act crazy and Glover remind us he’s too old for this shit, that’s all that really matters.

Another fun buddy cop action movie. Some fun action, good humor, and good relationship between the leads. The freshness of the first two “Lethal Weapon” movies shows signs of settling down into a formula in this third excursion by stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, and director Richard Donner. They know what they’re doing and how to do it, but we miss the sense of invention that brightened the earlier movies.
