Synopsis

Welcome to Sin City. This town beckons to the tough, the corrupt, the brokenhearted. Some call it dark… Hard-boiled. Then there are those who call it home — Crooked cops, sexy dames, desperate vigilantes. Some are seeking revenge, others lust after redemption, and then there are those hoping for a little of both. A universe of unlikely and reluctant heroes still trying to do the right thing in a city that refuses to care.

“She’s a dyke, but God knows why. With that body of hers she could have any man she wants.” Second (forced) viewing and this is still utter dreck – shallow, mean-spirited, gimmicky, misogynistic, and obnoxiously edgy for the sake of it all the time without a break. It’s the kind of laughably cartoonish crapsack worldbuilding that you’d expect from a 12-year-old trying to write “the darkest, most bloodiest story ever!”, and said 12-year-old would still have had too much dignity to write Holy Terror. I don’t even think the style saves this, because while it does occasionally manage to convey an impressive level of detail, it feels so (deliberately) artificial that it robs everything here of any kind of physicality…

Adapting a comic book series to film is one thing but translating it into a live-action motion picture in a manner that it brings the pages to life in an almost literal sense while mirroring the events frame to frame is something truly extraordinary. And that’s what Sin City is: something never done before, something never seen before, and something never experienced before. Based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel series of the same name, Sin City is presented in 3 primary chapters (That Yellow Bastard, The Hard Goodbye & The Big Fat Kill), each lifted directly from the novel & is presented in a non-linear & overlapping order (unless you’re watching the “Recut, Extended & Unrated” version). A non-related short segment named The Customer…

“Care for a smoke?” My (film noir-ish) reaction to the film- Night time. A little after 8:00 PM. Lousy dogs barking outside loud enough to be heard outside this lousy town, but they don’t matter. At least not at the moment because I just got done revisiting a goddess… She calls herself City…Sin City to be exact. She’s not like any other of those comic broads you see in those graphic novels. I always thought graphic novel was just some artsy term for comic book, but I’m getting off topic. She isn’t like some comic book broad. She IS a comic book broad. A goddess that leaped off the page and onto celluloid. A fantasy out of a dream and…

merely duplicating the frames isn’t sufficient to recontextualize Miller’s frozen gravity, his temporal snapshots. all that’s left is a fealty to his brutish, stupid masculinity. noir is more than black and white bleakness but Rodriguez never met an aesthetic he couldn’t half-ass. nothing’s worth doing if you can’t greenscreen it in your garage.

Upon first viewing, this is remarkably similar to Pulp Fiction. Here begin the similarities: 1. Three tales of redemption. 2. Three tales about macho males. 3. Three tales, not in chronological order. 4. One tale about Bruce Willis. 5. At least one of the tales being directed by Quentin Tarantino. 6. Seemingly un-killable characters (Vincent and Jules dodge death in Pulp Fiction, while Marv and Kevin take too much effort to successfully finish off). 7. Excellent dance sequence. 8. Very structurally similar, in terms of the prologue connecting up with the end, and little set-up vignettes after the credits have rolled. So, there you have it. I wasn’t expecting to be comparing this to my favourite movie, but here I am. Still really bloody good, though (is it wrong of me to think every scene with Benecio Del Toro in is hilarious?).

I’ve heard about how cool the style of this movie is and it lived up to those expectations. The over the top noir with only splashes of color occasionally was so cool. If only the story was just as good! There’s so much narration and it’s all just from brooding, gross men. What this movie lacks in color, it makes up for in misogyny. I feel like this movie was trying so hard to be edgy but instead it was like what if bad stuff happens to women over and over and over and over again! Every woman in this movie was either naked the whole time or got murdered or both. No thanks, I’ll pass on the big, macho men saving the poor defenseless women story. Also – unrelated, but I hope we get a live action Spider-Noir movie someday in this exact style. scavenger hunt 53 —> watch a movie featuring someone who died tragically young

A visual feast, drenched in atmosphere and noir and violence. It is significantly weakened by the depiction, treatment, character and role of women, though I can’t really say that men are so lucky either. I respect the execution, but not the taste – which incidentally is usually what I say of Rodriguez films.

“You’ve got a damn fine coat there“ First time I saw Sin City tonight and I really had a good time. I liked the comic, dark, twisted, noir style and those great voices, that narrate through almost the whole movie – Bruce Willis, Mickey Rourke and Clive Owen. It was just sad that Michael Madsen had so few scenes. He may have my favorite voice of all actors. But Sin City is not for everybody. It is cruel and definitely…

This movie is stunning visually but it’s insanely misogynistic. Hadn’t seen this in years and I didn’t remember how crazy misogynistic it is, like not a single woman in this movie has any agency of their own and they’re all insanely sexualized. I really wish they didn’t have the weird ass shit with Hartigan and Nancy, like whyyyyy are they making out he met her when she was 11, he’s like 40 years older than her ewwwwwwwwwww wtf. Idk if that was in the comic but like come on dude.

I HATE COMICS This movie split the comments into two camps: feminists who hated it because of all the excessive violence against women and people who liked it because they’re into mainstream comics, anime, and superhero movies (sick people). I hate this movie because of: • shitty voiceover • cookie-cutter characters • weak, painfully generic dialogue • performative masculinity driving the entire movie, going nowhere. • violence for the sake of violence that makes you feel neither sympathy nor awe We are not the same. I’m giving this movie 1 out of 5 for two pairs of naked tits, 1/5 each.

Love the classic Nihilistic movie genre, where you start with a cop that has his heart in the right place only for him to realize that society is corrupt and that the only way out is suicide. “But it’s a product of it’s time” Sin City is an incredibly slick film just oozing with style that feels ripped straight from the comic book page. But unfortunately that’s kinda just it…. This whole film feels like it was made to have clips taken from it and shown to all your friends at school saying “look how badass this is, look at this cool as fuck fight scenes with all the guns and stuff, FUCK YEAH” And that is…

This movie was really cool, especially because it was so different from anything else I’ve watched. I love that it tries to be a comic book in movie form. I really enjoyed the movie, even though I was a little surprised that it’s actually more or less a series of short stories that come together to form a bigger whole. Everything in this flick is straight out of the page. The dialogue, animation, and visuals make it feel as if you’re seeing actual panels on the big screen. The story itself is great with how it connects all characters in one way or another. Some storylines may be gradually worse than others, but regardless, this uniqueness provides a refreshing new way of viewing comic book flicks. Although the animation and VFX can be wonky at times, the dedication to creating the look is still very impressive and makes the film stand out.

First time seeing this in ages, and since reading the comics a couple of years ago. It is cool that they stuck to the comics so faithfully, and that they got such a star-studded cast. It’s a bit uneven across the three segments, with the best by far being the one with Mickey Rourke as Marv; it’s arguably the best story out of all of the comics, and Rourke is more willing to go all-in with his performance than any…

Haven’t we all shot Nick Stahl’s balls off? If The Big Sleep and Pulp Fiction invited Showgirls to hang out and things got a little nuts. Still think it was brave of Mickey Rourke to skip the make-up chair. Excessive in all the right places, it sees its own reflection and feels gloriously unashamed, and with such a stacked roster, it’s weird when an actor appears you won’t know the name of, and they’re all swinging for the fences.

I remember when this movie first came out; the black and white look, the gorgeous women, and the hardboiled action and narration. ‘Sin City’ is a fun exercise in style, over-the-top style to be exact. Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller (based on his comics) wallow in this fantasy world. However, if you are looking for depth, you will not find it here, because of the one dimensional characters. Additionally, there is not one female character that is not overly sexualized.…

Joya de película. Fotografía de 10. Excelente trama y concepto. Me enorgullece haberla visto.

It’s exactly what you’d expect. It’s over the top, goofy, kind of clunky but still a good time. If you know what you’re going into then I think you would like it. I do think it overstayed it’s welcome, the last 20 minutes or so were not needed.

Mon visionnement d’avant-hier l’a encore confirmé.

Wow… I actually had to check if I was watching the right movie. Is this it? I thought this was absolutely terrible. Almost everything about it, with the exception of some visuals, was so awful… the direction, the characters, the story. And I haven’t even started on the extreme misogyny. I hoped that at least the visuals would be really cool, but I have to say, some of those felt like they were on one level with Kung Fury (a film that I seriously consider to be better than Sin City).

I really love how over the top the style is. However, there are many plot lines that could’ve been made better with more nuance. I don’t mind damsel in distress stories, and I don’t think the story was meant to be taken at face value because there’s the theme of drugs and a false sense of reality. But I think the movie fails to make clear that these male saviours are just as problematic and misogynistic as their villains. Sucks when you watch something that could’ve def been 4+ with better writing.

If this was just the Marv plotline, this would be close to 5 stars – problem is the rest is just super boring and the end is just a brutal watch “Damn he’s slick”

Really disturbing storylines. I’m not sure if Frank Miller or Weinstein is more to blame but I’d imagine it’s Miller since this is based off of his work.

Sin City feels like a comic book brought to life – visually stunning, dark, and incredibly entertaining. I’ve never seen another movie quite like it, but the style only carries it so far, as the story lacks the depth or thought-provoking elements to make it truly great.

I’ve watched plenty of films from Robert Rodriguez but I’m yet to watch Sin City surprisingly and this may be his best film yet, despite releasing in 2005. It oozes style and it’s so unique, I loved that it was filmed in black and white and that neo-noir vibe it has from the minute it starts is so breath-taking to watch so I bet this was a blast on the big screen 21 years ago! The cast was great as…

Sin City is one of those movies where the visuals alone leave a lasting impression. The black-and-white noir style with those splashes of color was absolutely insane for its time. And let’s be honest, Jessica Alba was basically everyone’s childhood crush back then. Add the iconic characters, unforgettable scenes, and enough quotable lines to fill a dozen memes, and you have a movie that is hard to forget. “She’s worth dying for.”
