did you know that the reason most detransitioners give for doing it isn’t that they didn’t want to be trans, or it wasn’t right for them. it’s actually because the people in their lives, the world around them, made it impossible to continue. will rewatch, more to say after, it’s a blessing

“Why does this story feel like a memory?” A hyper-digital, sentimental mess of fiction and reality not only blurring but disintegrating right before your eyes at the prospect of returning to ideas, images, and feelings from another time and another world where you were another person. Now looking backward with a newfound formal freedom and seeing how the machine you built has been ingested and exploited and algorithmically reflected back at you. But it’s still yours, fundamentally derived from your mind, your heart, your being, which means that the power to destroy it belongs to no one but you. “I remember this, I remember us.”

Among other things, a film about: the enraging state of IP-based filmmaking and the impossibility of an original artist getting a budget for anything other than a sequel, the residual pain & doubt even when you’ve attained your real self, late capitalism as a manufactured state of endless longing, and the important difference between victory and peace. Will have more thoughts later to let people go in as blind as possible (even if “spoilers” are less relevant here than any recent tentpole), and after I get the chance to see it again to parse its breathtaking glut of ideas and stylistic bravado. It took people at least a decade to catch up to Reloaded and Revolutions. It may take as long to realize what a unicorn we got here in such a dead mass culture space.

73 There are so many threads at play here. The monopolization of media culture, and how the general public is obsessed with the film you created and yet they don’t even understand it. The studio is moving ahead with a reboot, with or without you. Video-game writers cracking jokes and playing ping pong, trying to define and spearhead the art that they grew up on, but didn’t make. Or the desire to create something new is first defined by breaking out of tired, repetitious loops, a structure that is put in place so anyone that detaches from the binary is still lost in the labyrinth of code, unable to gain traction and find their way out. “Back to the Matrix!”…

It’s fitting — maybe even fate — that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” should be the biggest and virtually only movie in the world on the week that “The Matrix Resurrections” is released. Both are mega-budget, meta sequels that feed on our collective familiarity with their respective franchises. One is a poison, the other its antidote. One is a safe plastic monument to the solipsism of today’s studio cinema; an orgiastic celebration of how studio filmmaking has created a feedback loop so powerful that it’s programmed audiences to reject anything that threatens its perfection (and to clap like seals for anything that reaffirms it, even if that means cheering for the “unexpected” return of heroes and villains they were once eager…

Nothing will ever approach the shock of the new the original gave us, but this is still a quintessential Wachowski huge swing, deeply idiosyncratic and defiant of expectation, cluttered but meticulously constructed and written to theme, and unabashedly dorky. Just like the last two sequels it’ll probably be another decade before everyone realizes this is Actually Good.

It’s a decent enough film just would have liked it to explore more about the newer characters. Seemed very rushed. I think if they were going to retread the Matrix waters, it had to be over two or three films, but I am not sure the creators or the studio were interested in that. Maybe it was just me who was wanting more having been such a huge lover of the original films.

Okay if anyone says they hate everything about this. I get it, truly. But I really do love how meta it is, sometimes a little heavy handed sure, but this does feel like a mocking of what the studios and internet wanted it to be. But what really works is again Neo and Trinity, and the new Agent Smith is truly fantastic. One thing I think all of the movies do really well is the lore, but I’d be lying if I called this a “good movie”, rather than one I just an entertained by. Good ideas here, not the best execution. 59/100

Honestly, this was a truly admirable attempt at reviving the series– it finds a sensible way to bring the characters back, injects several surprising upgrades to the film’s universe, and incorporates an unexpected amount of meta humour, clever callbacks & playful jabs at the social media generation. Unfortunately, the overuse of slo-mo can be a slog to sit through. The loss of The Matrix’s iconic/creepy green tint also feels wrong (even if it was done for story reasons). More fundamentally, it just doesn’t feel all that revolutionary or fresh anymore. Maybe it just goes to show that some franchises are better left alone?

Recaptured the magic of the original’s first act, but reeeally felt like a studio-obligated sequel after that. Lack of Lawrence Fishburne and Hugo Weaving held it back, but cynical takes from one returning character and seeing what another has accomplished since 2 and 3 was good.

It speaks volumes how few of the original cast and crew were willing to participate in this disaster of a movie. A documentary about the film’s production and development would be a far superior piece.

A good sequel that took way too long to have been made as Revolutions set up the possibility for another entry into the franchise. However it felt like the first part to what could be another trilogy than an actual complete film. The premise was interesting but it felt like the actual execution of it could have been much better in the final product. A lot of time is wasted as the plot drags on what happened to Neo in…

1 hour of this and all I’ve seen is flashbacks from the original trilogy, a lot of CGI and John Wick with superpowers… Thought it was going to be different. I’m not a fan of this.

Didn’t need to be made, just a cash grab, making them both the chosen one was dumb. It only gets one star for being mildly entertaining for the first half

Note 1.5/5 ⭐️

The Matrix Resurrections is a movie that seven years ago, I never expected to get in my life. At the time, it was scheduled for a 5/21/21 (May 21, 2021) release date, alongside John Wick 4! This probably would’ve destroyed the world! For obvious reasons, both movies did not release at that time, with M4trix hitting theaters and HBO MAX simultaneously just before Christmas 2021 and JW4 not coming out until March 2023! Me being a fanboy and FINALLY getting…

‘The choice is an illusion you already know what you have to do’… it really is that deep guys. Genuinely very curious and intrigued by the mental illness side of this story, which is the version I’m choosing to interpret. I can imagine they would have had to put a lot of research into the details of the experience many who suffer from very severe mental disorders go through. Which makes the first half as a whole very sad but…

When it comes to Resurrections, the Matrix probably should have stayed unplugged. For starters, this is a franchise built on revolutionary action sequences, yet there wasn’t a single one here that stood out to me. None of the choreography reached even some of the lower points of the originals, and for the most part the action scenes here lacked any true excitement. More frustrating though was the overuse of what was basically a ‘force push.’ At a point, this became…

This felt like a pointless cash grab, though I didn’t hate it. It was interesting to see how they continued the story and I liked a lot of the ideas that this movie brought. Unfortunately it completely lost all of the sauce that the previous ones had because the action was bland, most of the characters were completely forgettable, and it didn’t feel like a matrix movie at all.

A
Nothing comforts anxiety like a little nostalgia.
-
B
This was better than when I saw it in theaters when it came out. It is a little mirror-up-to-society but I think at least I can use that right now. Full of callbacks that are so fun. The whole angle is quite adeptly chosen.

I heard nothing good about this so I was fully expecting to hate it: I did not. I didn’t love it but there were a lot of things going for it. Not everything worked, sure but it’s damn near impossible to revivals/reboots, etc. . In the same way, I commend them for trying to do something new or different but can also recognize why things don’t work. I don’t think this is a particularly good action film, which all of…

Finally watched the final installment and you know what…not bad! I really think it lays on thick the points it’s trying to make but I think that’s good cause reloaded and revolutions are still mostly indecipherable to me. Thought Keanu and Carrie-Anne still have good chemistry and wasn’t bothered really by the cast changes.

Wonderful film. I completely disagree with the opinions expressed at the time of its release. I appreciated the metacinematic element, which wasn’t so much a jab at the previous films as it was at the audience—something I generally appreciate, especially when it happens so rarely in big-budget movies. The two leads certainly resonated with me through nostalgia, but the rest of the cast also won me over, particularly the new Morpheus and Smith. It’s definitely a film that, even in…

I think The Matrix trilogy is basically perfect, so I put off watching this for a while. Ultimately, I think it falls into Prometheus territory for me in that I prefer reflecting on the film’s themes more than I enjoy actually watching it. Glad this exists, though, and I appreciate it as a deeply personal and weird epilogue for the series.

A movie I’m incredibly conflicted about, love some of the big ideas but not always the execution. Some stray thoughts – Cybebe rules – Neil Patrick Harris is imo terribly miscast – All the meta stuff in the first act is incredibly grating, especially the writers room for the new “game” – The final act set piece with the chase through San Fran alongside the heist of Trinity is thrilling. I know writers who use subtext and they’re all cowards. I don’t think Lana Wachowski did this out of spite. It’s not a Gremlins 2 scenario. There’s a weighty overcurrent of cynicism directed at, variously: psychotherapy; corporatism; group-think; modern culture’s cannibalistic insistence on regurgitating the same old shit because you remember it (mostly this, actually), and plenty of other isms and schisms along the way. I think she did this because some random prick probably would’ve done it instead, with…

Easily one of the worst things even put to screen. I’m usually indifferent to reboots since some of them actually have the potential of being good. This was not one of such cases. This was a mess. Written by an Alzheimer’s patient. Every 5 minutes was a flashback to remind themselves what had happened, why anything was still happening and presumed the audience also had this condition. The cgi was just fine. The casting was possibly the worst aspect, only preceded by the screenplay itself. I’ll give it an extra star for my pity and the dying of a light.

This was better than I expected a 4th matrix film to be but it still wasn’t amazing. I honestly enjoyed how confused I was at what happened since the last film, slowly discovering details as to how long it’s been, what happened to all the characters, and why Neo and trinity are back in the matrix. I think while some of those answers were interesting, it wasn’t as rewarding as I had hoped. For a reboot/legacy sequel, I think it…

Wonderfully Meta in so many ways. What movie is able to deconstruct its first trilogy in such a wonderfully cynical way. That whole pitch meeting for the in-movie matrix 4 game is so wonderfully cringe. Showing quite frankly what happens when the internet forms or even worse corrupts artistic vision. Because the ideas and comments could be read verbatim in oh so many comment sections and subreddits. Moral of the story is: Don’t fuck with artistic vision. Or you might…

I REALLY FW THIS FILM. Movie like this is honestly the best way to respond to studio execs messing around with franchise contracts or whateva… However I DO think it was precision engineered in lab with the sole intent of inducing headaches or other severe psychosomatic symptoms within the viewer. Symptoms of such magnitude that any artistic merit I could award has been siphoned away from me at the basest level of my astral body,, like root chakra discomfort from this movie. But yeah I think it’s bad on purpose(?)

I would have been pissed if I’d paid to see this in the cinema. First of all, I’m a huge hater that they changed the actor playing Morpheus. I really didn’t like the whole film, it’s confusing at the beginning, and I don’t like the concept. Very disappointed with everything the film has to offer, it’s a disgrace to the trilogy. Horrible.

In my opinion, the fourth movie of the saga is average at best. It starts strong, but the plot soon loses the flow of the original trilogy.

Peace

I recently watched all the Matrix movies, and I feel like this one is completely out of place. The plot feels so random and truly disconnected from the original trilogy. At the start, I wondered if I had missed something, or if there was another movie that I hadn’t watched. Broadly speaking, the movie isn’t bad, especially compared to what people say, and its initial bad reviews were a little too harsh. However, when you take the whole Matrix universe…

Neo and Trinity… I could talk about the two of them like a bard. The yearning and pining were so intense that a mere touch would bring the whole world to a halt,, they were so close, yet too far.

THIS REVIEW IS FROM A PRIOR LETTERBOXD ACCOUNT AND MAY NOT REPRESENT MY CURRENT VIEWS AND/OR OPINIONS Unfortunately, I found it hard to buy into the entirety of what Resurrections presented me with; enjoying a lot of what was introduced in the first half, only to find that the film didn’t really delve into the questions posed in a way that I found satisfactory. However, Resurrections is surprisingly restrained, and intimate – veering 180° from the maximalism of both Reloaded…
