Within 30 mins into Saving Private Ryan, Steven Spielberg rewrites everything about warfare filmmaking, destroys several Hollywood clichés, completely redefines the combat genre, and permanently cements his film’s place amongst the greatest examples of its kind. And the rest of the picture is no less intense, for this World War II epic remains powerful, visceral & harrowing throughout. The film opens with the devastating but successful invasion of Normandy by the Allied powers during World War II and the main plot surfaces after that. The story concerns a band of soldiers who are assigned a new mission to go behind enemy lines in order to retrieve a missing soldier whose brothers have been killed in action. Spielberg’s direction this time around…

“I don’t know. Part of me thinks the kid’s right. What’s he done to deserve this? He wants to stay here, fine. Let’s leave him and go home. But another part of me thinks, what if we stay, and by some miracle we actually make it out of here alive? Someday we might look back on this and decide that saving Private Ryan was the one decent thing we were able to pull out of this whole godawful, shitty mess.” This quote right here is the ethical core of Saving Private Ryan. The search for Private Ryan functions as an allegory for the United States’s involvement in WWII and generally as any nation’s attitude toward warfare. Hanks and his band…

There’s no denying that American movies are well-made. However, because they embody an American mindset, they can sometimes feel imposing—and at times, like blatant brainwashing. A lot of these films tend to romanticize true events. I accept that movies take creative liberties, but as viewers, we need to stay sharp and process the information critically. Take Saving Private Ryan, for example. I really enjoyed the film; the characters were compelling, mature, and showed profound self-sacrifice. Yet, the core premise—rescuing the…

A violência é caótica, confusa e frequentemente nojenta. Soldados morrem sem aviso, sem música triunfal…

The opening alone is enough to tell you this is something special. The battle scenes are brutal and chaotic, but what really got me was how human the soldiers feel in between all of it. Spielberg made war look terrifying without losing the story underneath it.

O ~ this is a really solid flick. The special effects are out of this world. I love the lighting and the slightly too high shutter speed on the camera. Sometimes the camera is definitely too shaky, but most of the action is capture with just the right level of shake. This movie feels really surface level most of the time, it doesn’t have to be super deep to tell me the nazis are wrong. But you fr got John…

the real villain of this movie is whoever the fuck thought private Ryan was so important that it was justified to risk the life of an entire unit. I know his brother died and his mom was sad but are you fucking kidding me. You just got like 30 men killed horrifically just for his dumbass to be like “oh what im going home, cool”. This movie pissed me the fuck off and made me deeply depressed for days. That being said, amazing movie with wonderful accuracy.

Spielberg does it again. 20+ years after Jaws he gives us another masterpiece. The fact that this movie actually gave WW2 veterans PTSD from watching this shows how truly real it felt in the moment. I’ve never served but that opening scene on D Day is the closest I’ve ever felt. This movie pulls on your heartstrings, tests your moral compass and will tell you about your fight or flight instinct. I will say the mission is bullshit but that’s…

I still vividly remember seeing this for the first time when I was 16 and it absolutely messing me up. From life to death in the snap of a finger, you witness some of the most horrific and terrifying images almost immediately. It’s so much more haunting because you remember this is a recreation of things that actually happened. Lives that were lost. People with families. Absorbing that all in to my smooth little teenager brain was almost surfeit. This…

A great amazing movie, just can’t give it 5* bc sometimes dialogue is hard to hear, little bit of plot armour (tiny). They niggle in my mind tho, other than them it’s a magnificent piece of filmmaking. Like The Deer Hunter, I didn’t expect to be so emotionally moved. I was tearing up at multiple points throughout. The battle scenes are hard to watch in their brutal realism. The acting and atmosphere is raw and ruthless. The direction is vast…

Saving Private Ryan was a really good movie, with a boring premise to it. This takes place during WW2, and Captain John Miller (Tom Hanks) has been assigned to bring a boy home named James Ryan (Matt Damon). The whole movie is John and his crew searching for this boy, and it all ends with an epic battle. Some of the deaths were emotional, and the performances from all these actors were very good. The movie didn’t blow me away…

Spielberg takes the romanticism out of WWII and replaces it with terrifying realism, grit, and visceral humanity. The legendary Omaha Beach sequence remains a masterclass in tension and sound design, but the film’s true strength lies in its quiet moments. Tom Hanks is brilliant, anchoring the chaos with a performance grounded in exhaustion, empathy, and moral weight. Backed by Kaminski’s phenemonal camera work and Williams’ subtly devastating score. A brutal, heartbreaking masterpiece that demands to be felt as much as watched. Perfect film.

Once you get through the opening scene this is just a great ride! Tom hanks at his best (almost maybe— see Forrest Gump and maybe even A League of Their Own). Cutie little Matt Damon. Never underestimate the epic power of Spielberg film. “You can tell her that when you found me, I was with the only brothers I had left. And that there was no way I was deserting them. I think she’d understand that.”
-
Z
A war movie in the truest sense. It’s not Apocalypse Now or Paths of Glory, it isn’t trying to subvert your expectations of what a war movie should be. It was revolutionary in its own right, of course, in the way it captured the intensity and chaos of war better than any other movie. That comes from Spielberg’s expert technical camerawork, emphasizing a feeling that was meant to be evoked in classic war movies, but taken 20 steps further. It doesn’t try to reinvent the genre, it just takes the classic war movie formula and executes it at the highest possible level.

#7 of BIG Film August (told you I’m locked in) “Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition…right?” “You got that right… FUBAR.” ‘I think am in the wrong warr jennuyyyyyy’ Back when Steven Spielberg was reinventing every genre after genre😮💨😮💨 (fuck you, Disclosure Day) These men give their lives for a man that they have never met, and only so a mother has something to be happy and grateful for. It’s hard to overstate its cultural impact and influence over subsequent depictions of WWII. From the visceral violence to the desaturated coloring, Spielberg’s epic dispels more than 30 years of Old Hollywood glamorization (see The Longest Day, A Bridge Too Far, The Guns of Navarone, The Great Escape, etc. etc.) within its brutally effective opening 30 mins. While the story begins to slide into predictability and Spielberg can’t help but indulge in some trademark sentimentality, it remains an emotionally powerful and technically impressive achievement.

There’s a version of the bookends that wrecks me, but this one ain’t it. The flag + music + salute is all laying it on much too thick. Those and the Sizemore hokey line summarizing the thesis are the only really groan worthy moments though. The filmmaking is undeniable. I think Davies was the highlight of the cast for me this time.

🎬 Movie Review: Saving Private Ryan (1998) ⭐ Overall: 7.7/10 — ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 💬 My Review: Saving Private Ryan is a good movie. I really don’t have anything bad to say about the actual movie. The story is great, the acting is great, the impact is definitely there, and the ending is one of the best parts. But this movie is TOO DAMN LONG. 😂 Almost three hours?!
