The opening few minutes of Paul W.S. Anderson’s “Monster Hunter” are such a delightful eruption of unfettered, goofy-ass, who-cares-what-your-parents-think nerdcore that it seems as if the director of 1995’s “Mortal Kombat” (and the “Resident Evil” series after that) has reset video game movies back to the good old days when they weren’t bogged down by delusions of respectability — when they were memorably bad instead of just dull or “Assassin’s Creed.” If only. The “Monster Hunter” franchise, which might be helpful for neophytes to think of as the Pepsi to Pokémon’s Coke, has always stood out for its high fantasy trappings, and boy oh boy does Anderson embrace those in a big way right out of the gate. We open…

Using all their imagination, they came up with a desert full of big spiders. That’s not a fantasy world, that’s Australia.

MAD MILLA FURY ROAD Hardly anything extraneous here including all of its silly excess and goofy sense of humor. Anderson’s cutting has sped up but this is far more coherent than his last couple outings. Probably his best movie since RESIDENT EVIL 5, maybe even his second best movie, period.

i miss going to the movie theater, i miss loud soundtracks and loud sound effects, i miss movies that just start running and never bother explaining where they’re going or why, i miss movies about cool stuff like monsters and swords and fistfights that are only incidentally about tough ladies and friendship and teamwork, i miss careful beautiful images for their own sake, i miss disregarding narrative for fun. milla misses running water and i miss it too, she wants to go home to a world that sucks so bad but at least doesn’t have sandworm dinosaurs and dragons so it seems like paradise in comparison and i miss not living in a disaster within a disaster. after this i…

I got stoned and wrote about Monster Hunter. Sample here: As an idiot of the “Vulgar Auteurism” Hall of Fame and alumni of goofy film shit that ultimately meant nothing, I can proudly state that I have been on the front-lines of praising shit like DTV action movies and Paul W.S. Anderson’s video game flicks for the better part of a decade. I have Gamer on DVD and everything. Anyway, so with Monster Hunter you’re getting exactly what it says on the tin, there’s some monsters and they need-a-hunting. With the flimsiest slapdash plot stapled onto this thing where a soldier (Mila Jovovich, who is a confirmed Bernie-Bro) is trying to get to the other side of the mystical sand-storm…

Last Resident Evil made clear that PWSA really loved Fury Road and he mostly repurposes the desert setting and relentless pace for his own personal uses. The mid section which has Jovovich and Jaa walking around desert with ocassional monsters is pretty much everything one might hope from an Anderson film: minimum plot (they don’t even speak the same language for exposition), some lowbrow humor, lots of creative creature work and a camera that keeps adapting for space. Just watching the different ways can purpos entrapment out of open space is more than worth on pure formalist grounds. The interplay between Jovovich and Jaa is pretty good too, but every character that isn’t them, Ron Perlman or a cat is…

PWSA turned a video game into Hell in the Pacific with Milla Jovovich and Tony Jaa. Best superhero movie of 2020. Watching it a day after the bloated, ugly nonsense that is WW84 is a good lesson in the difference between termites and white elephants.

63 Monster Hunter won’t convert any skeptics to the B-movie pleasures of Paul W.S. Anderson, but it’ll surely satisfy anyone on his wavelength. Anderson’s typically stellar sense of expansive geography and corridor warfare sets this apart from its often cheap CGI, as does Doobie White’s editing, exemplifying a constant spatial awareness in spite of the quick, rabid cutting. So much care is placed in the movements of the actors amidst the obstacle of the monsters. Above all, it’s the lean pacing that keeps the energy up, but possibly at the cost of fleshing out its more complex ideas regarding imperialism. At its best, Monster Hunter plays like a tactical re-working of Fury Road. A banger synth score too! Don’t know if I’d put this up with the best of Anderson’s work (Resident Evil: Retibution, AVP, or Event Horizon), but it’s great fun.

Shit movie not worth a watch. I know the director loves his wife but ge might want to cast someone else just to try. The only reason there is a star is that Tony Jaa is actually not too bad in his role and some sequences with him are cool. This universe is awesome. There are more than a 100 large monsters and they took lime only 3 of them. Kind of a frustrating watch when you know the ip. Hellboy sucks in there

watched this stoned out of my mind and it was just okay. cgi/monsters were great but it was like a nothing sandwich. ended on a cliffhanger and no character development. the script pretty much sucked too and same with the music. the only redeeming part was the weapons/monsters/action
-
J
For half the movie, the film shows you fights with a weird looking, 4-legged monster that doesn’t look intimidating because it’s body is so skinny, and a bunch of big spiders. This movie does nothing interesting with the fantasy world of Monster Hunter, the game it’s adapting, and even abandoning all of the source material. Up until the final fight with terrible environmental CGI, is the first time we see an interesting monster, in which they’ve only shown us about 4 the whole movie, and it’s worse because it’s just a dragon. Horrendous honestly.

The plot wasn’t explained until 75mins in when there was 20mins left of the movie. Nothing stayed the same between shots and the cinematography was impossible to follow. Also I need someone to count how many jump cuts there were. The monsters looked awesome though 🔥

if you can manage to get through the first half of the movie congrats, it doesn’t get less boring or better. i’ve never seen a more confusing, useless piece of media in my life. whatever their budget for it was could’ve been used for literally anything else.

Can we take any other beloved franchise and do the same obhorrend bastardisation to see the general outcry? Thought Experiment: In the first 30 minutes we’re watching US soldiers being stationed in London, being exposed to some magical entities. Yada yada, a dimensional portal appears and we’re watching Milla Jovovich walking through the Great Hall in Hogwarts during the Sorting Ceremony, pointing her gun at Dumbledore and asking “What the hell is this place?”. The movie of the Sorcerer’s Stone…

The plot is basic but the action and effects are good enough for me to make it an entertaining watch on a rather dull Friday night.
-
J
They don’t get much love, but Paul WS Anderson is actually a good action film director, and Milla Jovovich is a great action film star. This is not one of their best, but it’s fun. And the first couple Resident Evil movies they did are excellent. And pretty much all his films, including this one, pass the Bechdel Test. Also Tony Jaa is in this! Wild that Tony and Milla are both 50 years old. And respect to Meagan Good for having a career that features Eve’s Bayou and Monster Hunter.

There’s so much potential to explore the Monster Hunter universe through a live action film. Unfortunately, this was not it. There’s only one way I could describe this film, and that is: Hot Garbage. The writing was lacklustre, and we as the audience were not given any reason to have connected to early characters before they died. Various buzzwords like “Rathalos” and “Palico” are also sprinkled throughout the film in an attempt to engage the Monster Hunter fans who have…

I know nothing about Monster Hunter (I’ve played maybe an hour total combined of any of the games) but even I know this is a literal shit stain of an adaptation. Absolutely baffling that instead of just making Milla the player character insert and doing a Monster Hunter World adaptation, they decided “yeah just isekai her into the world and do a Max Max Fury Road × Dances with Wolves/Avatar mashup for the plot, also she’s a soldier in the Middle East for some reason” was a better idea. Pain, misery even.

The first half was some of the worst cinema i have ever seen. The ending was kinda sick tho. I enjoyed the fan service and the monsters were cool. Gore Magala showing up at the end was a huge cliff hanger and kinda makes me wish there was a sequel and just gets right into the monster action.

The fact that while it would be challenging and not on the same level of the games yes; it’s probably not that hard to make an actually good monster hunter movie if you actually try, and then this comes out is insane to me. My God. I love the monster hunter games so much, Ive beaten monster hunter world and iceborne and spent alot of time in the game. This movie is the worst thing that has ever happened to the series. Id rather jerk off with sand paper than watch this again. Tie up the director to a pole and force him to watch this movie until he dies. Thought this would probably be stupid and guess what, pretty stupid. (I do not care about the source material at all.) Don’t know why this needs the US Army in it when the titular franchise’s world, when given the occasional moment to shine, kinda looks interesting just on its own. Couldn’t just put a local through the new player initiation? It had to be a patronising, violent American? Why are we reducing Tony Jaa to a sidekick who mostly says…

Not like the game (as expected from a movie adaptation) but I enjoyed it, I mean its got the dude from Ong Bak and Resident Evil bad*ss as the two leads and Hellboy at the end. Monster Hunter follows a group of specialists that are teleported to a world of monsters accidentally. The plot of this film was pretty interesting, but nothing was really translated into the film too well. Adapting a Monster Hunter game into a film isnt easy but this isnt the way to do it either. For all the solid action and some good looking visuals, the final 1/3 of the movie is really the only interesting part. The beginning through the “two warriors become friends” journey is so underwhelming. If the whole movie played out like the final 40 minutes I would’ve watched 3 of these films.

This was so unbelievably bad. I kept trying to find something redeemable and I couldn’t. 100% of the problem stems from American soldiers getting isekaied to the monster hunter world, which is honestly just a baron desert. So much focus on guns and firearms that make no sense for the franchise. The CGI is awful. The plot is literally just them walking around because of a language barrier. Very little time actually fighting monsters and in total only about 4.…

The one good thing about this movie is that it made me nostalgic for being a kid, swinging a giant sword on my PSP and killing monsters like it was a full‑time job. Beyond that, it’s an utterly empty film — and honestly an insult to the whole saga.
