50 years later I’m still a little weary of getting back in the water. What a great accompaniment to a cinema-defining classic.

Ja.…

Hearing Spielberg say he used to sneak onto the Jaws boat at the Universal lot just to lie in the cabin and cry for hours made me so sad. I need to do the same now.

I could watch 50 more JAWS documentaries since THE SHARK IS NOT WORKING back on the laserdisc, but this handsomely crafted doc doesnt offer anything new but it’s the new perspectives that makes it feel fresh, even though I could hear JAWS anecdotes till Bruce comes home. The uncovered BTS footage from the most unlikely of places was pretty mind-blowing considered with every annual watch it feels like we know these characters so to see Shaw with his British accent and Roy & Richard hamming it up is like seeing history revised. Also to hear the inner turmoil from Spielberg himself both on the day and decades later is another example of why you can see the auteur’s passion then and even now.

For a film that is a well documented as Jaws, I still found this documentary to be insightful and full of lots of anecdotes while paying tribute to the film’s 50th anniversary. It does pull from some older documentary clips but getting to hear how impactful this was for filmmakers like Steven Soderbergh and Jordan Peele was well worth the watch. I would also like to watch Robert Shaw’s drunken version of the USS Indianapolis monologue. It’s still crazy to think that if the film bombed hard, it could’ve very well ended Steven Spielberg’s career. Instead we get arguably the most impressive directing filmography of all time.

This whole thing was a total railroad job, they didn’t interview one shark. You’re telling me no one even THOUGHT to talk to Bruce and get his side of the story? A great watch if you’re into anti-shark propaganda, journalism’s dead.

A solid documentary about the making of Jaws. I learned a few very interesting facts, including how the Indianapolis speech was basically a group effort, with actor Robert Shaw completing the final draft. Also, even more impressed by Shaw’s acting now that I’ve heard his real voice!

A great look at what it took to make Jaws and how lucky it was it paid off. If I was Stephen Spielberg I would probably also still have nightmares about making that film.

Not me getting emotional during the Martha’s Vineyard parts!! I love Martha’s Vineyard, I only went once but I had a great time, and I’ve been trying to go for the past two months but it keeps raining goddammit. Rest in peace The Jaws ride One of the better documentaries about the making of the film, I didn’t expect that they would bring in such famous figures as James Cameron or (what does she even have to do with it) Ariana Grande. The Minecraft scenes were very interesting, it’s a shame they didn’t add Roblox (joke)

Everything that’s interesting to hear about how this movie was made are probably stories that you’ve already heard. I’ve listened to Spielberg tell it every time I’ve been on the tour at Universal. The shark animatronic is probably the one thing about this whole thing that’s truly interesting. The rest of this documentary is pretty dull with marine biologists and divers telling you sharks are cool, random actors and directors telling you sharks are scary, and then extras from the…

It’s kinda to believe that Jaws came out 50 years ago and much impact it would cause to not only movies but the idea of a summer blockbusters being a thing at all that studios are still using to use to reap in a lot of money from the bigger budgeted films out there. And it all started from a shark movie that made people be afraid to go to the water even if the effects of the shark wasn’t…

Okay, so it’s a fluff piece that doesn’t provide much new information for a Jaws superfan. There are certainly ways to re-examine a classic film (or any subject that has been covered ad nauseam) in a fresh way, and Jaws @ 50 is content to avoid doing that. It’s a talking heads documentary that provides the same superficial overview of the Jaws legend we’ve been hearing for the past five decades, even resorting to pulling footage from other Jaws documentaries…

This is so real bc I have to take a long ass many years break before I can watch a film I made or the nightmares persist. There is something traumatic about releasing a precious idea you have coveted and loved into the hands of the world, the amount of stress and pressure involved, it becomes a game of survival until its finished. And when it is finished? It never really is. Still the most fun and best creative release you’ll ever have tho and still my most favorite thing in the world. A transformative trauma we choose again and again.

I wish we had more looking back making of docs. I love a full behind the scenes style(LOTR) but theres something special about mixing it with interviews at the time of filming and interviews in the present day knowing what we now know. This was fun, we already know what the filming of Jaws was like, but its just nice hearing someone like James Cameron talk about the inspiration Jaws had on him. Also, people who mutilate sharks deserve an eternity of pain

With a film as monumental and as documented as this one over half a century of existence, it’s a miracle the blockbuster and Spielberg are in our lives at all. While the contents of this documentary didn’t expand too much deeper than what is already out to the public (why is Emily Blunt in this?), the story of hell and misey leading to what it lead to is almost like ancient cave paintings in film is a whole.

A first time screening. Delightful and nostalgic. And such a fun array of from-a-distance fans and folks directly involved. Many of the anecdotes shared were not new to me, but there were some good surprises. (“good” as in interesting, not “nice”). I’m looking at Spielberg’s discussion of his post-filming “panic attack” breakdown. Absolutely terrifying, and how he overcame it by hiding out in the “Orca” on the Universal lot. Fascinating. Art can definitely take it out of you. I’m curious…

There’s better documentaries about the making of Jaws, but seeing Steven Spielberg talk about the lasting genuine trauma and literal PTSD he had gotten from making this movie is usually something that gets laughed off, but here it’s presented so seriously and it just hits you like a truck. I don’t think I’ve ever heard Spielberg on the brink of crying as he is here. Holy humanization of the person we usually hold to this god of cinema status.

Laurent Bouzereau’s DVD making-of docs are a hallmark of why movies are 40% of my personality, topped only by the Extended Edition featurettes and Empire of Dreams. This doc is indicative of behind-the-scenes material being reduced to short promotional clips or brand-deposit streaming docs over the past 15 years, where studios have been focused on reifying their own myths without capturing the anxieties, risktaking and collaboration of the filmmaking process. Thinking of Jaws makes me immediately happy like nothing else, so I don’t really mind Bouzereau deciding that when the legend becomes fact, he’ll print the legend.

Just now getting around to watching this after having wanted to see it badly for the past year, and it did not disappoint. Laurent Bouzereau, who directed this, is best known for his frequent-collaborations with Spielberg when it comes to making-of documentaries on his films. But the new interviews and previously-unseen archival footage…

A great insight into the minds of the people who made JAWS. This was really cool to see. Finding out how they cast the extras really makes you appreciate the film in a different way. You get a look into the teamwork it took to finish this film, and how it almost didn’t get finished. Fellow directors like Guillermo Del Toro and James Cameron talk about the influence they took from this as well. A great behind-the-scenes look at one of the greatest horror films ever.

Great documentary about the first summer blockbuster and it’s impact and legacy. Doesn’t really reveal anything new that the excellent previous ‘Jaws’ documentaries haven’t but still a great fun retrospective all the same. Neat to hear Spielberg talk about how he was super influenced by Hitchcock when making ‘Jaws’, and docs like this are super fun where we just gets tons of actors, directors, and other industry people gushing over a particular movie. Great doc for a perfect movie.

steven’s transparency about his mental health after the challenging production of Jaws, despite the major success, was really thought provoking. it says a lot about how he as an artist measures success, and how his experience making the film mirrors the movie’s theme of survival. the idea of him curled up in a ball CRYING on the red booth of the Orca cabin at Universal Studios is a heartbreaking image 🥺 i did cry several times while watching this. steven said it first, Jaws IS home

“Music with our eyes closed will take us places that no other media or art form can take us.” -Steven Spielberg It’s cool seeing other big filmmakers now a days just praising Jaws and using it as inspiration. My, what, third? fourth? Jaws documentary offers little new to the making-of conversation (and even recycles footage from a previous doc), but what it does add is special enough to make it worth the time. New insights from islanders and from Spielberg himself are welcome additions to the lore.

What’s not to like here? If you like “Jaws,” definitely check this out. This was THE movie I remember as a child frightening me the most. For years, I could feel my blood pressure rise any time I heard those two low John Williams notes accompanying an underwater shot of a swimmer above. The documentary is loaded with good stories and info, and it doesn’t overstay its welcome at a brisk hour and a half. Definitely worth watching!

i do love a movie about making one of the most iconic movies of all time. i also love how the most traumatic and difficult movie to make in Spielberg’s filmography was also his most defining and breakthrough one. there’s something philosophical in your hardest battles being something you both need to advance and maybe even look back fondly at some point. simultaneously his least favorite and most necessary experience.

Not the technical deep dive if that’s what you’re looking for, but still enjoyable to see a mix of old and brand new interviews with the people involved. The stories have been told numerous times before in books and other documentaries but a 50th anniversary is a good enough reason to tell them all again.

“What you don’t see is generally scarier than what you do see.” The fact that my car is named Bruce simply because I found out the mechanical shark in this was called Bruce, years before I had ever actually seen Jaws, just proves how big its influence is.

“the shark is not working…the shark is not working” — had to be the most annoying line ever experienced by a whole crew shooting on an ocean.

A very good documentary that pretty much covers everything you would want to know about the making of Jaws.

An excellent documentary that talked to a wide range of people from filmmakers, locals, and eyewitnesses, to Spielberg himself in telling the fascinating story of the making of Jaws and its cultural impact over the last 50 years. Very entertaining.

Bouzereau used footage that I’m sure he originally shot for his John Williams documentary in this movie and thought we wouldn’t notice. I SEE YOU LOLO! Rating: 3.5/6 Favorite Part: I already knew most of what this documentary discussed, but I didn’t know about the lasting trauma that Spielberg faced for a while after the movie was done shooting, which totally makes sense given the problems that he faced and the stakes tied to the movie’s success. That was really fascinating to hear about.

Finally got to this doc; it’s terrific and i wished it to be twice as long. Interesting to hear Spielberg speak frankly about his worry and anxiety, then and now., since we tend to see so many of the directors of that era only as brash risktakers. Also nice to see so much about the film’s relationship to Martha’s Vineyard, then and now.

In a bout of insanity that I have no excuse for, it took me 36 years of life to watch Jaws start to finish. I know I am late as fuck, but I’m OBSESSED.

Absolutely incredible inside perspective on just how much hard work, sweat, blood, and tears went into making this film. Since I was a little boy Jaws has always been my favorite film and will continue to be for a long time. Till this day I would be lying if I said I don’t think twice about getting in the water whether at a beach or a pool, as irrational as that may sound it’s true! In a way Jaws both sparked my…

Chego. Jaws, you will always be famous. ⋆ ˚。𖦹 ⋆。°✩

So… I decided to watch this on my own, kind of randomly. I’m usually not big on documentaries, and the only type of documentaries I usually watch are movie-related ones… like this one… But the thing is… I watched this almost 5 months ago (I’m writing this on July 12), and truth be told… I forgot almost everything about it since then!! I’m not sure if that says more about me and my memory or about this documentary lol! But…

Steven Spielberg talking about how he’d go get in the back of the Orca, after it was brought to the Universal Studios backlot for the tour, just to lay down and cry… That’s going to stay with me forever.
