I ate up all 5 hours in one sitting and was still bummed when it ended. Also, I’ve got way too many Scorsese blind spots. Time to rewatch the De Palma and Spielberg docs I guess. Anyone got any good filmmaking doc recommendations?

Look, right up front, this is very good. If you’re one of us, you will watch this, and you fucking should. But like all of these contemporary legacy docs — SPIELBERG, DE PALMA, and so forth — what a missed opportunity! This guy may be the greatest of our elder statesmen and even given five whole hours it is so tremendously lacking in depth and insight even while it’s an embarrassment of anecdotal riches. The last 30 years of Martin Fucking Scorsese’s career go by in less than an hour. We get rare interviews from DiCaprio and Day-Lewis (in fairness the director’s spouse) but we couldn’t get a soundbite from Cruise (the superb THE COLOR OF MONEY a relative footnote…

Watched this in fragments over about two weeks. Definitely enjoyable, but also definitely the Official Story. I’m tired of always being told that The Color of Money is mid because Siskel & Ebert didn’t like it – it’s a great movie! Lip-service is paid to a few disquieting tendencies in Scorsese’s art and life, but mostly just so you can’t accuse it of not having raised those points. Most haunting moment for me was when one of “Marty’s” elder daughters remembers acting in The Age of Innocence as being a particular highlight of her relationship with her father because he gives his fullest attention on a movie set. Geez. First two episodes with a bunch of Marty’s old pals from the neighborhood, including the guy…

Gotta love it when Tarantino catches a couple of strays in something like this (thank you as ever, Spike Lee). Was also living for every time Paul Schrader had something to say – he looks so pleased with himself when he comes up with “internet man” as a play on “underground man” during one of the interviews about Taxi Driver. The doc loses its way by the final episode, but the first few are gold

Per un po’ ho pensato che fosse un documentario su Joe Gambino.

The best part of this is Isabella Rossellini describing Marty’s “tiny body” and how he is a “teeny little man.”

in some ways , the first time i really reckon with scorcese’s career with cultural and personal context. its really nice to see what was going on outside the filmography.. how these personal journeys made their way into each entry. i’ve always loved him, but feel that i’ve just been handed the glossary for his films. very excited to start revisiting last episode is masterful!

Scorsese’s relationship to the King of Comedy was something I deeply felt. When he said that he couldn’t make a directorial decision because he was too far removed from the material, doing take after miserable take, I learned something about myself. You see, I too am hopelessly passionate about my craft and use the medium to think about and reflect on the world around me and my own convictions. Needless to say: I enjoyed all 5 hours of it despite…

Arguably the greatest American (or just) director still working today, Scorsese, like others I’m sure, has always been special to me because he was the first filmmaker who opened my eyes to what Cinema was/could be. A singular voice that explores varied and challenging subjects where the focus is just as much on the craft as it is the content. Delving into his work when I was younger informed, inspired and moved me more than anyone else. If I had…

really, really needed one more episode. like, this mostly covers a decade an hour, which is a pretty good pace, and when it decides to linger in some periods of time — particularly in the last temptation of christ backlash — for extended stretches it feels earned. but when there’s an hour left and this thing is trying to tackle every single post-2000 point in his life in one go while also trying to bring some sort of verdict together…

Scorsese is always an interesting interview, and this does a good job of communicating what sets him apart as a director. Is it too much of a love-fest? Maybe. But maybe he’s earned it. Biggest surprise for me was how much trouble he’s had over the years getting his films financed.

An engrossing look into the mind of one of the greatest filmmakers of all time. It’s a little heartening to see the outtakes from his sets and see how much he struggled with getting his set-ups and the grumbling of the crew and actors to make movies even though we know that they’re going to turn out great. That said, since it’s a miniseries and all, you could have thrown in another episode to talk about Hugo and more of…

This guy knows how to make a movie!!! Really disappointed that Hugo wasn’t even mentioned??? His first 3D and PG film?? It was the first Scorsese I ever saw and even though I was young I knew there was something special about what I was watching.

What a wonderful documentary on one of our greatest American filmmakers, Martin Scorsese. He truly was a pioneer in film. Only Spielberg comes close This was such a good primer for the rest of the year as I dive into Scorsese and his work. This was so well done. I may watch it again at the end of the year.

Undoubtedly one of the all-time greats. This documentary focuses on the life and films of the incredibly talented filmmaker Martin Scorsese. My biggest problem — and kind of the only real problem — is that, like almost every other documentary of this kind, it doesn’t mention the films he drew inspiration from even once. I think films like Infernal Affairs, which is well known to have served as a huge inspiration for his crime drama The Departed, deserve to at…
