I ain’t never been a hero, Wade. Didn’t expect to love it like I love it, but here we are. The smooth and gradual formation of an unlikely yet intense bromance between the two major characters gave me the urge to stand up and cheer. I wish I did, maybe I should’ve, it’s something worth celebrating. This is the first film by James Mangold that I truly enjoy, the ending is awe-inspiring, the music by Marco Beltrami is delightful, together they made me feel feelings. Something tells me that my ears are going to have a field day with Logan, now excuse me while I listen to the main theme on loop for the next few hours.

If 3:10 To Yuma had ended about 20 minutes earlier than it did, I might have stuck 4.5 stars on it. Unfortunately, it has an ending is so utterly implausible and ridiculous, relying on a ludicrous shoot-out where all of a sudden no-one can apparently hit a cow’s arse with a banjo and a final scene that is so preposterously thought out that I could hardly believe it, that I almost feel annoyed at giving it 3 stars. That’s how much the denouement irritated me. What was even more annoying about it was the fact that, prior to that, the film had been the very definition of not being packed with the usual cliched shoot-outs. It also had the good…

Farmer can’t pay his mortgage so the banker sets his barn on fire. Nobody tries to stop him. nor does anyone seem to care about stopping a murdering bandit until the railroad (notorious cinematic totem of capital) gets involved. The railroad pays the farmer barely enough to cover his debts in order to risk his life and stop the guy stealing from the railroad. That thread gets lost in favor of some good old fashioned masculine bonding and righteous, indignant individualism but I’ll take it, even if the ending defies all narrative logic. Too bad this didn’t come out after the 2008 crash. There’s also a terrific, nearly 15-minute-long shootout at the end. Mangold shoots a lot of it in handheld close-up but cuts relatively sparingly, which is really important for clarity if you’re gonna do that.

Is it wrong of me to love this so much? Me being a girl and all. Well, fuck it, I don’t give a damn anyway.

Honestly, James Mangold might be the greatest studio director we have these days. He takes fun ideas and elevates them significantly, making the subject of his film extremely captivating. This reminded me a lot of Mangold’s Ford v Ferrari. It’s a super bro-y movie with some amazing sequences, and great performances. It’s escapist without feeling cheap. While I was intrigued by Christian Bale’s performance, this might be my favorite performance of Russell Crowe. He toes the line perfectly, making you afraid of him but drawn in by his charm. Ben Foster is also insanely good. I was happy to see him in such a crucial role. I hope this man gets cast in more things. I picked up this blu-ray at Goodwill, very fun blind buy!

Film #9 of Misty and Driver’s Ultimate Western Adventure AKA Driving Misty Daisy. “I like this side of you, Dan.” – Ben Wade This is everything a western should be. It ticks all of the following boxes: [_] Being completely bad-ass. [_] Being completely brutal. [_] Having compelling antagonists. [_] Having compelling protagonists. [_] Blurring the line between antagonists and protagonists. [_] Having bromance that reaches across the boundaries of good and evil. [_] Having entertaining supporting characters. [_] Having a wealth of characters that are cannon-fodder. [_] Maintaining a fast pace. [_] Dispensing unlimited ammunition into people or woodwork. [_] Having a fixed goal that it reaches in either a bad-ass shootout or another similar act of bad-assery. [_] Having a Gatling gun. [_] Having explosions. [_] Having an exploding horse. An exploding horse. More movies should have those.

This movie is genuinely one of the greatest things I’ve ever watched absolute cinema The way the relationship between Wade and Dan slowly develops is fucking insane it’s not just the typical hero vs villain dynamic there’s this weird almost philosophical connection between them that makes every interaction hit harder The tension is CONSTANT the dialogue is immaculate and Wade is such a ridiculously charismatic villain every scene between him and Dan had me locked in And the craziest part…

Good performances from Crowe and Bale with a nice little idea for a movie but idk if I’d rewatch again. Good movie though from Mangold.

A film ending that is truly fair to all parties; even though Wade could have escaped at any time, he still respected Dan.

2026 Szymczyk Film Challenge – Week 31: Watch a film in the top 100 Westerns on Letterboxd Funnily enough, this film felt exactly like two hours of a scripted host narrative from Westworld. The moral complexity of these characters, mainly from Crowe, is very rich with a lot to chew on for an action focused story. The second act tended to drag on a bit, but I thought the first 30 minutes and the whole third act was pretty electric.…

Well that was disappointing. Everything good about the original is either spoonfed or just really poorly done. A lot of this film is just fluff and Hollywood action slop. Not surprised but I was hopeful

Awesome cast. Awesome ending! Yeehaw 🤠 It did take me a good chunk of the movie to understand what was going on but I think that was purposeful. Once it’s revealed you’re in for a ride. The Wild West action is something else I tell y’all!

What makes it so compelling isn’t really the shootouts or the Western setting, but the relationship that develops between them. They’re constantly sizing each other up, challenging each other’s ideas about courage, honor, loyalty, and what it means to be a good man.Russell Crowe and Christian Bale are both excellent, and neither character fits neatly into the role of hero or villain. The tension between them builds in a way that feels surprisingly psychological and personal.Even if you don’t usually like Westerns, this one is worth watching because underneath the cowboy story, it’s really a character study about pride, morality, and respect.

Alright watch. Story isn’t too confusing, the plot is a tiny bit boring, but the movie is a vibe and i love how the actors did

I really like the chemistry between Crowe and Bale here. Also, Ben Foster as a scumbag always works.

A stonking good Western spoilt by the last twenty minutes or so. Crowe and Bale are both brilliant in the two main leads and the film is an exciting brutal tale. However for me the denouement of the film is a bit ridiculous and far fetched where all of a sudden the bad guys “should have gone to specsavers” as they all can no longer shoot straight to hit a target and some of the character decisions seem a little too forced and strange.

An absolutely stunning western with an amazing ending. Beautiful character development from both Bale and Crowe’s characters – where you fully never know which way the story is going to go. And an amazing final shootout scene to top it all off. Not my favourite western but it’s definitely up there. 9.0/10

Filme muito divertido, mas eu entendi a motivação do vilão primeiro ele é praticamente um demônio depois ele ajuda o protagonista e no final mata o próprio bando que passou o filme todo fazendo de tudo por ele

Russel Crowe plays such a good villain. Christian Bale was great too. Didn’t love the whole “sacrifice” thing with him towards the end, but it did set up the rest of the ending, which was really good. Great western, and not really a dull moment throughout the whole movie.

The ending kind of doesnt make any sense given everything else about Russell Crowe’s character, but whatever. Very fun movie with cool cowboys doing cool cowboy stuff. Lotta good characrer actor guys in it. Christian bale is kind of a loser dork but plays it well

“Sometimes a man has to be big enough to see how small he is.” Don’t worry everybody! This is a 2000s western so we’ll actually cast Indigenous, Mexican, and Chinese actors to show an accurate collection of cultures found in the west! Are you giving any of those actors lines of dialogue? Hahaha nope! But look, Ben Wade is kinda rapey this time!

I was blown away by this movie in 2007. However, it got lost that year against No Country for Old Men. I love it more than that film. The acting, writing, and directing are still excellent. It is very male-coded and virtuous. Russell Crowe is incredible as the outlaw Ben Wade. Christian Bale, Ben Foster, and the supporting cast are excellent too. Just an amazing Western remake with an unforgettable ending.

I like that it tackles the theme of morality, but I couldn’t help finding it a little absurd how the final act unfolded because of a certain character’s moral whims. Other than that, it’s a very entertaining Western.

A damn good modern Western. Christian Bale and Russell Crowe are both fantastic, with Crowe especially bringing so much charisma and unpredictability to Ben Wade. The tension between the two makes even the quieter moments feel compelling. The action is brutal, the landscapes are gorgeous, and James Mangold gives the whole thing a gritty, epic feel. That final stretch is absolutely relentless. A great Western with strong performances, memorable characters, and plenty of tension.
