For a moment there was silence… silence so loud that I felt every beat of my heart and the unevenness of my breathing. The landscape swallowed us all as the world moved on. In the end, no one, neither us nor the world, ever returned to what it once was. But we were left behind. An early anti-war work of cinema that manages to remain timeless, not only through its frontline battle sequences, but through the fragile humanity etched into the faces that struggle to keep their composure throughout the film. And that facade fractures after every single battle. Milestone’s depiction of war works with such power, almost effortlessly, because it renders war increasingly mechanical, again and again, until only…

World War One was a barbaric waste of human life, just to keep European colonialism and imperialism afloat. All Quiet on the Western Front comes from an era before World War Two, when the consequences of that earlier war were still strongly felt. Partially the film stems from US sympathy for Germany after the war, but it acts as a blunt critique of all forms of war. All Quiet on the Western Front is very critical of those who profit from war, the governments and kings and manufacturers. Here was a war where ordinary people from so many countries were sent to fight just to please the powerful and their geopolitical interests. We must never forget it. All Quiet on…

Raw and intense warfare mixed with a group of high school students. It’s as saddening and innocent as it sounds. As one of the earliest talkies and anti-war films, the realistic bombardment is visually impressive and distressing in its sound design. Despite noticeable technical flaws, there’s a handful of masterfully executed scenes. It left me stirred but overall heartbroken.

35mm All Quiet on the Western Front is one of those movies that makes you wonder how human hands, limited by the technology of the era, could craft something so emotionally devastating and technically daring. Words can’t even comprehend how a movie made nearly a century ago still feels so spiritually alive with those sweeping battlefield sequences, the close-ups of young faces already carved by fear, and the sound design that feels like a distant echo of real suffering. There’s absolutely no doubt filmmakers have used this movie as a blueprint, consciously or not; its fingerprints are visible across decades of war cinema. Yet, despite its towering influence, we can’t allow it to fade into existence simply because of its…

So powerful and ahead of its time. The editing and camerawork are beyond impressive especially when you consider this was nearly 100 years ago!

A brutal and immediate portrait of how horrifying a war really is. And we can still feel it to this day. This film strips the classic war film trope such as heroism and gave us what war truly is. It’s dirty, scary, exhausting and boys turning into bitter men after realizing they all died for nothing in the trenches in the name of their country and the promises of blaze and glory. Lew Ayres as Paul Bäumer and his emotional…

Woke up, showered, got ready, went to school, then watched during free periods. I read the book before this, and to be honest I do prefer the book. however of the film adaptations to come from it, I think this is by far the best. it is the only film I’ve seen which is actually an anti war film. I absolutely love the ending as well.

“But you’re just a man like me, and I killed you” It’s all the same as it ever was – War is spurred on by the rich and powerful and carried out by the poor and vulnerable. Nobody ever wins, nobody gains, and everyone is worse off. Watching this in 1930 after being in the actual War had to have felt like getting hit by a semi truck, and the fact we let it all happen over again just a…

Literally as powerful and relevant today as it was when it was made. Poignant. Magnificent. Powerful. Heartbreaking.

This movie aged very well, probably way better than other “old time” movies. I was very impressed by the way it showed the horrors of war, in the end, it doesn’t matter what you die for, you just die.

So much more realistic from a historical perspective. Is what most people say because they automatically assume that closer to the event is better. It was much better as a run of the mill anti war movie but it really can’t beat the 2022

One of the movies – despite being almost a hundred years old – that allows you to see how foreign war truly is despite how natural it can feel. It reminds us that youth is wasted on the young, but because of the old. The final act is truly awe-inspiring. Those final shots retell the whole movie’s story in just a few seconds. When looking up the script to grab the dialogue pasted below, I saw that the script was…

I read the book yesterday so I wanted to watch the original film adaptation. As far as adaptations go it was pretty loyal to the source as well capturing the emotional weight. There were some scenes I wish had made the cut (Russian POWs) but overall the film was great even if I couldnt help but think of English class when ‘dulce et decorum est pro patria mori ’ was said.

Great war film, very depressing and does not shy away from the horrors and terror of war yet still somehow has time to introduce a colorful cast of lovable misfits just trying to make the best of what they have. These are fathers, brothers friends and children of loved ones forced to fight against people they do not know nor care to fight. I love when they discuss how to end war and they talk about how they should make…

An excellent film, albeit held back by the difference between it and the source material, as well as by the technology of it era. It slightly missed the target when it came to the tragedy of its source material, coming across less devastating and more mildy sad. Still good though!

9/10 Murilo RQ

This probably rocked audiences from 1930 so hard. Like “This would kill a small Victorian child” vibes. Some of the shots I couldn’t believe were shot in the early 20th century. This film definitely pushed the medium forward. Genuinely think this was so far ahead of its time in a ton of technical aspects, but there are still plenty of scenes where the ‘film is just like stage plays’ mindset where it falls short. Overall, very impressive, and we always love an anti-war film. Does this pass the Bechdel test?: No

1 Year 1 Film: 1930 A group of young men enlist in the German army for the honour of fighting in the Great war. I am left empty. Not that this has anything new to say about war that I haven’t heard already, but to be one of the earliest, one of the closest to the actual events, to use the still fairly young medium of cinema to shatter the romantic illusions of warfare and honour so bluntly and clearly,…

The acting styles may be antiquated, but the battle scenes in Lewis Milestone’s Oscar-winning anti-war picture still pack a punch after almost a century. Lew Ayres delivers a career-making performance as Paul Baumer, one of a group of schoolfriends who enlist in the German army at the outbreak of WW1, little realising the horrors that await. By turns harrowing, melancholic and poignant, All Quiet on the Western Front is a masterpiece that is all the more remarkable when one considers it was made at a time when most filmmakers were still struggling to adapt to sound.

So this feature film won ‘Best Picture’ but I really didn’t think much of it. Sorry, not sorry. So the fella in the poster there? you seem him in like 2 scenes. Just throwing that out there.

WWI Band of Brothers before WWII Band of Brothers, a year right after Erich Maria Remarque’s novel hit international acclaim, Universal snapped up the film rights. Production went to the studio founder’s son, twenty two year old Carl Laemmle Junior and Lewis Milestone took to the director chair. Whenever there’s a big war comin’ on, you should rope off a big field… And on the big day, you should take all the kings and their cabinets and their generals, put ’em in the center dressed in their underpants, and let ’em fight it out with clubs. The best country wins. The 2022 version was a lot more brutal, relentless and —for me— effective at showing the pointlessness of war. Probably just the result of +90 years of cinema…

A very good or even great film that I’ll likely never watch again, and not because it’s harrowing so much as it’s exactly what you expect—through little fault of its own. In his landmark The American Cinema, Andrew Sarris makes a memorable close-reading comparison between two similar scenes in All Quiet on the Western Front and The Big Parade, finding Vidor superior to Milestone by almost mathematical logic. This has long stuck with me, and I’ve certainly tried to emulate…

It was weird how not a single one of them had a German accent even though they were German soldiers and it looked weird when it looked like they were all moving in fast forward. Other than that though this was a fantastic film that portrayed the horrors of war perfectly but somehow all these years later we still haven’t learnt our lesson about war but hopefully maybe one day.

I’ve read that this movie was regarded as the Saving Private Ryan of its day, and it indeed pulls no punches. The illusion of patriotism and glory being shattered as soon as the boys step into basic training is deeply sobering, and it only gets more agonizing from there. The combat scenes are exceptional, and exceptionally graphic for the time; that famous shot of the disembodied hands gripping the barbed wire will stay with you. Lew Ayers’ haunted performance aids…

“Sweet and fitting it is to die for the Fatherland” —A Roman phrase translated by the Professor of a class of young German boys eager to join the war effort. All Quiet on the Western Front depicts the changing perception of war in the early 20th Century. Today, the sentiment that war abducts young men at an impressionable age, whips them into a jingoistic fervor, then sends them to die or return home crippled physically and emotionally is almost old…

They lied; there were many moments the Western Front wasn’t quiet. This is unacceptable, misleading, deceiving, absolute malarkey. This movie was a masterpiece. It best shows what World War I actually looked like and how people spent years in the trenches. The film also does a great job of telling the story of the characters’ friendship and their trauma—how, after spending so much time at war, a person can no longer live without it. It’s one of the best movies I’ve ever watched. I love the line :We have lived through three years, four years! Each day like a year, each night like a century! Our bodies are earth, our thoughts are clay, we sleep and eat with death!”

The early sound era brought us one of the greatest anti-war films ever made, backed by impressive technical and narrative quality. Released just a decade after the First World War and nearly a decade before the Second, it communicates a powerful perspective on war and global conflict that we can still reflect upon today. No matter how excited people can feel about endorsing these clashes, for the ones in control, it is always just another quiet day on the western front…!!

i really am a sucker for a ww1 story. it’s always so interesting to track the parallels between different tellings across history (such as my favorite novel, In Memoriam, as well as a recent read, At Night All Blood is Black) there were some shots that struck me with their composition, namely paul’s view from within the shell hole as well as any of the extended takes of running (which then reminded me of 1917) i was impressed by the writing,…

This movie is outstanding and enough people said that already, it’s truly a masterwork! So here’s just some particular scenes that stood out to me: I loved the scene in which they talk about how a war/this war is started and how they feel that they shouldn’t even be a part of it, because they don’t feel offended by another country.

Surprisingly intense battle scenes. The tone of the film felt a little disjointed at times, but the anti-war sentiment was effectively conveyed. Tbh my biggest issue is that I had trouble telling apart several of the protagonists, which blunted the emotional impact of their respective demises.
