The Killer is a movie about how awesome and embarrassing it must be for a 60-year-old man to live with the fact that he directed Fight Club (not at all a knock against Fight Club). I kinda loved it.

A cold, stylish revenge story that is as ruthless as it is ridiculous. Just a pretty cool fucking film. Simplistic and relatively bare bones yet still an insightful character study with a subtle, tense Fassbender at the helm. Fincher examines the pursuit of perfection—it’s self-critical and absurd, yet retains the tense, intoxicating mood of some of his earlier works. I can’t recall the last time I saw so much product placement in one film, though. Thought that was quite funny.

Hard to view this as anything but a neurotic perfectionist who botched his last job, went “oh fuck, this is new” and had to go back to the forensically focused, obsessively stylized, and psychologically perverse outsider/serial killer genre fare he made a name for himself on. I can see where people are getting the detached, existential-loner criminal subjectivity comparisons from (Le Samourai, The Driver) but its closest companions for me were the similarly slickly banal approach to a brutal international industry of contract killing operators in Soderbergh’s Haywire (every great director should get to make their variation on this movie with Fassbender), the strange, hypnotic architecture of single-mindedly reversing through a brutal, traitorous crime network in Boorman’s Point Blank and…

After hearing that Greig Fraser wouldn’t be back for The Batman sequel, I was lowkey concerned. However, I never questioned Matt Reeves’ judgement. After watching this, I genuinely believe The Batman Part II is in good hands. The motorcycle scenes in this felt so similar to the first film. I truly believe Erik Messerschmidt‘s experience working with Fincher will translate in his work on this next film.

Es una película rara, se disfruta más por su vibra y cinematografía que su trama en si. La actuación de Fassbender es lo que carrea toda la película, es entretenido ver como se desenvuelve el asesino, me recuerda a lo meticuloso que es Mike en Breaking Bad, aunque he de admitir que se puede volver aburrido a momentos.

Interesting concept but I just think the pacing was all over the place. Good performances but the characters just weren’t that interesting. Features an incredible fight scene. The killer does definitely kill quite a bit, in a cold blooded manner that makes the viewer uncomfortable, which isn’t a bad thing at all. Didn’t love the amount of product placement, especially towards the end. Amazon paid a pretty penny for this one. ⭐️ 6/10 ⭐️

I think Michael Fassbender did a spectacular job. In my personal opinion, this could be an accurate portrayal of a meticulous killer. There are some really good scenes and I particularly enjoyed his face-offs with The Expert and The Brute. It’s an underrated Fincher’s film, but it’s still not bad at all.

Fassbender is fantastic, endlessly insisting that nothing is personal while embarking on an extremely personal revenge mission. The contradiction is both the point and the joke. More than anything, the Killer feels like an obvious cipher for Fincher himself: an obsessive perfectionist convinced that meticulous preparation can eliminate chaos. “Stick to the plan” might as well be Fincher’s mantra, making every mistake and forced improvisation feel like sly self-parody. Cold, funny, cynical, and immaculate—pure Fincher.
