93 Not exactly shocked that this is proving to be divisive considering its subject matter, but let’s be real here – the first act is designed to rustle any and all feathers, and it’s inevitable that bloggers at Cannes fell for its Wile E. Coyote trap. Just about every composition is loaded with contextual triggers: directional arrows on the grocery store floor, social media feeds of misinformation and aesthetically pleasing infographics, smashed storefronts, masks slipping on and off during protests and socially distanced gatherings, the ubiquitous presence of blue light, a ceaseless stream of pain and suffering and outrage on the news etc. Even so, Eddington merely sets the stage with its COVID narrative complications. The movie eventually becomes a…

Out-of-touch white dude makes a movie mocking the “out of touch” white folks who protested after the murder of George Floyd. I’m in need of a shower to wash the holier-than-thou centrist stink off. Such a brave revelation to drop a “both sides are so crazy” film in 2025, because you’re not currently capable of anything besides lazy provocation. Eddington is a sometimes funny but always shallow Rolodex of images and themes from 2020, somehow spread out over a disgustingly indulgent 150 minutes. Aster doesn’t seem to have the guts or the knowledge to approach any of the issues he presents at more than a kindergarten level. With that being said, he’s quite comfortable smugly saying “look how silly both…

Seeing lots of reactions/hot takes to this movie in the same way Civil War was derided: “these filmmakers are irresponsible.” To portray these events, these hot-button issues, without first declaring your true intent, or without exposing your political shortcomings, is, to some, unforgivable. I doubt Aster has perfect politics. He’s not looking at 2020 with a goal to evenly skewer every political ideology. He’s viewing 2020, more specifically a mindset that exploded in 2020, through his own lens. He’s an artist. I personally thought some of the jokes were in poor taste. I felt gross––which is the point. Aster is provoking us, which is sorely lacking from so much art today. It’s mean-spirited, ugly, and hilarious. But it’s also deeply…

Turns fully into the vertigo of the COVID/BLM years in a way designed to leave absolutely everyone feeling terrible and more insane. I loved it. Aster makes a film that unsparingly aims to render what it feels like to be alive in the present, which is to say a baffling experience mediated entirely by screens that produces total alienation. What this movie does better than anything is portray this ubiquitous sense that there is some unspecified DOOM out there with our names written on it. It it the virus or is it the cure? Regardless of your politics everyone has some version of this, and we’re all convinced that everyone else is lying to us about the nature of this…

Grossly irresponsible to make a film that attempts to examine the intensely vitriolic state of American politics amidst the earliest months of COVID and not mention how Trump, or the MAGA-sphere, directly amplified and exacerbated so many of those very issues. But at least we can laugh about the youths caring very loudly about George Floyd’s murder. And we can roll our eyes at the women who succumb to right-wing conspiracies as a coping mechanism to deal with trauma that exists just to make them difficult to stomach. I found every part of this uninteresting and, maybe even worse, unintelligent. No interest in digging into the nuances that exist within this reality, no attempt at reconciling with these experiences, just nonstop upping the ante in the bizarrely cruel and misguided ways Aster seems to be gravitating towards more with each new film.

The first truly modern American Western, or at least the first one that has the nowness required to mention Pop Crave by name, Ari Aster’s “Eddington” is also the first major Hollywood movie that’s been willing to see the COVID pandemic for the hellacious paradigm shift that it was — as the moment when years of technologically engineered polarization tore a forever hole in the social fabric of a country that was already coming apart at the seams. Few other filmmakers would have the chutzpah required to make a “No Country for Old Men” riff that hinges on mask mandates and the murder of George Floyd, and we should probably all be grateful that none of them have tried. But…

It used to be that every white male wanted to write the next great American novel and now it’s every white male filmmaker wants to make the next great “provocative” movie, and it’s tiring.

Ragebaiting joe with Katy perry’s fireworks is insane! Lmao. The film is so dense idk what to say, I guess it’s beyond my comprehension. Like I get it but it’s too much. But that’s why I love it. It’s satirical. It’s funny in a lot of way. And definitely bleak. following Joe’s not believing covid is kinda hard for me, thank God there’s not so much of it. An intense psychodrama that grapples with the turmoil and phenomena of the Covid-19 era (without, however, being limited to them). It is razor-sharp, incredibly cynical, and delivers a brutal finale. The cinematography and acting performances are, of course, superb! Unfortunately, the film loses its way a bit in terms of runtime and focus – though the sense of frenetic confusion was most likely intentional, it was also tiring.

I was waiting for when the bulls on the poster would make an appearance. I enjoyed this film. The way it was shot and edited was really up my alley and the performances and the oddball feel and the satirical tone all worked for me. And there were a ton of left turns taken in the plot which were so bizarre but never took me out of the film, just made me more curious about what was happening. That being…

The first time I saw Ari Aster’s Eddington I might not have been in the right frame of mind. So I might have judged it too harshly the first time around. It is something of a slow starter as it proceeds to get more interesting in the…

One of the most ambitious films I have ever seen. Taking this topic so fresh in everyone’s mind and making it into a film like this is something that you kind of have to give respect to. So Joaquin Phoenix is being chased by ANITFA secret agents that rode in on a private jet, whips out a literal LMG, like in Fortnite, runs out of ammo and switch’s to an assault rifle, moving like an action hero, AND YOU STILL DON’T CLOCK THE SATIRE!!!!‼️❌❌💥💥👹👺❓❓⁉️🆘🏥👨🦰 Like bro this is a great movie, and I think had it been released another five years removed from the topics it covers, you’s might consider this what it is. Honestly the first 90 minutes just felt like super on-the-nose political commentary that felt played out and uninteresting, but the final hour completely turned this story in a direction I was not expecting, and by the time the credits rolled I was actually pleasantly surprised. the type of movie that makes you think. you can only understand this if you know american culture and politics well, fortunately (and unfortunately) i do and i can tell this movie not only understands but also predicted how tired americans are of establishment politicians, it’s just peak and it’s also uncomfortable! that’s why this wasn’t nominated for nothing and one battle after another was, you can tell which movie actually told some raw uncomfortable truth. just a genius movie overall

I don’t think this is a great movie, but it hits upon two very important points: every American secretly longs to commit acts of mass violence and capital always wins. Joe Cross gets to have his rampage through town and the data center ultimately gets built. I think this movie could have been much more focused and it could get its points across in a more precise manner. It does get quite a bit muddy. However, I don’t think any other movie has captured the American Century of Humiliation quite like this yet.

In one battle after another la centralità…

A jam-packed exploration of community and self amidst social upheaval. Sure, there is a lot to unpack, and given the subject matter, it’s ripe for polarizing opinion. Observing the politics and rhetoric with some degree of neutrality elevates the film’s effectiveness in conveying, at least to me, its intended meaning. The film’s opening and closing images of “SolidGoldMagikarp” highlight the disconnection between each other and within ourselves. A comedy? The humour was completely lost on me but: Affecting in it’s tour of 2020 and for effectively capturing the disorientation of that time. Weird and almost refreshing (?) to see COVID-era scenes that once felt so inescapable and familiar, and now nearly memory holed – or at least hardly discussed – only a few years later. The portrayal of the naive leftists/BLM teens, while not necessarily inaccurate, felt surface level and played for laughs (Brian’s dad at dinner…

A very audacious movie. It takes a real weirdo’s eye (complementary) to take 2020 and assemble it on screen, and who better than Ari Aster? It kind of seemed to be saying that everyone was crazy, which saves it some hard conversations but also robs it of its fangs. I’d kind of appreciate it more if it had gone full tilt into one side’s headspace—but I thought it was very impressive how it never felt particularly preachy or judgmental, which…

I am a big fan of this movie. For precisely the reasons everyone claims to not like it as a matter of fact. This is not a stanceless movie, it just isn’t in bed with a specific ultra-rigid ideology. The film is more or less how the COVID era changed us as a society, shrinking down all of COVID America into an off the map town called Eddington. All this absurdity, all this hysteria, all this divide, only to distract us from the fact that we are about to get absolutely fucked by AI data centers. It’s quite poetic.

Masks, guns and conspiracy videos, what a covid capsule. What bothers me most of all though is that they ignore obvious ballistic evidence that the sheriff shot the pueblo inspector when he went all Rambo towards the end. The scene of him getting slapped was priceless though. We need more blatantly opportunistic politician and influencer characters in cinema, like the skirt chasing boy and the Janus-faced mother in law. And more deeply sincere mumbo jumbo. But also come clarity, maybe.

Watched this at home on streaming. Somewhat mixed feelings about this one. I generally like films that go off the rails but for some reason this one almost felt like too much. Still enjoyed it.

HOLY MOLY this movie blew my mind lowkey (no pun intended). In typical ari aster fashion, its slow descent into unhinged and terrifying chaos really just has a way of getting to you. Great movie and would watch again
