There are several formal moves in this — transitions, superimpositions, camera placement — that I’ve never seen before. No one doing it like Park.

I lost my job because of Elon Musk recently (sometimes referred to as being ‘doge-d’) and I’m glad Park Chan-wook gave me some new ideas for how to deal with that

When I was seven or eight years old I looked up from my Nintendo and saw my Dad take pliers into the bathroom. His tooth abscess had been bothering him for some time, almost as long as he had been out of work. He let the rage and pain build, which never took long, and then reached the pliers into his mouth and yanked out that tooth. Adult teeth have very long roots. I didn’t understand until much later that he couldn’t afford a dentist. Another time, he was working at a White Castle factory and sprayed his right calf with the steam hose, sustaining third-degree burns. He smoked weed so workman’s comp was out of the question. The hospital…

darkly funny, yes, but also expresses how deeply sad it is to live in a world that would have us believe our self-worth is inextricable with employment. another masterclass from the best of the best – so many tasty dissolves !!

“How many times must I say it? Losing your job isn’t the problem! The problem is how you deal with it!”

Those needle drops were so well placed, so much built tension that I thought it would all crash down at once. A big recency bias but probably my choice for the best film to release last year, as PCW manages to subvert his style with the modern times showing how versatile he really is.

after watching this and handmaiden im loving park chan-wook’s artistic direction. the camera work, lighting, editing are all literally fantastic. every actor working like the rent is due tomorrow. lee byung-hun’s physical acting was too good you could see every emotion in his face. its also an actually interesting depiction of the rise of ai and mass layoffs that are going to happen because of it. would you kill 3 people for a job? hm maybe… also when in doubt just poke your nipples through your top!

Park Chan-Wook is on another level here. His shot compositions are just out of this world. He manages to find so many new and interesting ways to shoot things, this is such a visually imaginative piece of work. I’m really liking the style he’s sort of settled into here with Decision to Leave and then this. Feels utterly contemporary and yet also classical in a sense. I think both films are going to age wonderfully.

aesthetically speaking this is such high level craft, the use of colors and blocking is truly wonderful. so many great shots with lots to think about. i loved the tooth metaphor about relief and conscience. at times it did feel a little emotionally empty, which is holding it back to go all the way for me. definitely one for a rewatch

Effective, impeccably acted, absurdly hilarious, but a little too long. I feel like the point could have been made with at least 20 minutes shaved off the runtime. The cinematography is beautiful, but so deliberate and artsy it made me wonder if I was missing an important piece of symbolism. It’s frustrating when a movie seems to be “smarter” than you. Maybe I just need to watch it again. My favorite bit was Man-su taking off 3 layers of oven mitts to reveal the gun.

This movie just inspired me on how to deal with the competition for my crush lol. No Other Choice is a well crafted film on how the capitalistic world can to shape us and even drain us of our humanity. So. Much. Fun. The message is clear in what the movie wants us to think about class, I don’t even feel like it needs discussion. No other choice in the matter. I particularly loved the repetition of that phrase, a nod to the audience that is still in its own world. When I say so much fun, it looks looks like Park had a blast shooting this. It’s deceptively funny and there are so many playful and creative shots, especially…

Definitely one of the best “What Wouldn’t You Do for Your Family” films ever. Funny Park Chan-wook isn’t my favorite genre, but this film delivers such a powerful blow to the capitalist world we live in that I won’t deny myself the pleasure. The director also has a knack for creating secondary characters who are all memorable, one after the other. I would have loved a whole film about Lee Sung-min’s character and another one with the two detectives…pure delight.…

Absurdo!! A produção é sinistra. O cuidado da produção me…

Park Chan-wook builds better mousetraps than any director since Lars von Trier. His films feel like meticulously engineered machines, designed to trap, manipulate and occasionally brutalize the viewer while guiding them toward their inevitable climax. No Other Choice might be his most formally playful machine yet. There are transitions, superimpositions, compositions and camera placements here that I genuinely had never seen before. Park has always been a stylist, but what fascinates me is how rarely his formal experimentation feels decorative.…

“You must die, so I may live!” First of all, this film has the best editing I have ever seen in my life. That edit where the house transitions to the campfire is just bliss. 79 Super effective in the way it conveys its themes while still being able to give us some of that good ol’ Park Chan-wook insanity. Loved what this had to say about class, the rights of laborers, how people are pitted against each other, sobriety, etc. and I’m incredibly happy that despite the weird oversight by the awards circuit, that this was still able to find its way into my heart.
-
G
I know that the themes of this film are quite serious and the social commentary is spot on, but damn this was funny as fuck. The scene of the first murder is comedic gold, while also depicting not only raw emotions but also the issues surrounding unemployment. That kind of balance between gags and seriousness made the film stand out, in my opinion. Moreover, the camera work is unbelievable. Some shots are so original that you stop caring about the plot and start admiring the cinematography. Amazing.

A refreshingly different watch, and one you would be far less likely to see and believe in Western media. Excellent acting and direction. I was unsure what direction the movie would take for a good 30/40mins. Once the plot revealed itself, I was hooked to see if this man could really go through with this in the name of getting a job. The first half is quite slow and too didactic. Some scenes are useless and every now and then there’s a confused dialogue. Technically speaking, it’s wonderful, crazy camera movements, unusual points of view, juxtaposition of scenes, there’s everything.

Park Chan-wook surprised me with “No Other Choice.” The movie uses many of his signature techniques and methods of shocking the audience, especially through its creative depiction of violence. There is even a scene reminiscent of “Oldboy”, involving the brutal removal of a part of oneself, which works as a symbol of the forced transformation the characters undergo as a consequence of their actions. The story of Yoo Man-soo is a deeply tragic portrayal of self-destruction, the refusal to accept…
-
J
I think I can definitively say that Park Chan-wook’s work is just not for me; basically 4 for 4 of just finding his films to be just fine enough. There’s a lot of interesting parts – the subject matter, the camera work, the visuals, the sets – but the bizarre sheen over everything and the janky, goofy narrative just didn’t work for me. Definitely great moments individually, but I just find myself overall just shrugging and a bit exhausted.

Funny, but also serious enough to keep the message alive. The amount of pressure on the protagonist is so strong, even I was stressed on his behalf, despite him murdering the competition so heartlessly. A grim reminder of what it can take to get ahead in capitalism, selling out your union buddies, lying to your family, and gambling with everyone’s futures. Good shots, memorable scenes. Solid dark comedy.
