Фільм заслуговує на ‘серце’, але все, що я відчуваю, — це ‘розбите серце’. At the end of the film, one of the characters asks: “What if this war is until the end of our lives?” — and this phrase resonated with me like an electric current. The question is terrifying, especially because it is asked in a relatively calm atmosphere (in a specific segment of the film). And there is no answer to it. If ’20 Days in Mariupol’ was a shocker during the viewing, then ‘Andriivka’ had the opposite effect — it hit not while watching, but afterwards. If we try to abstract ourselves, this is a raw and brutal war documentary that plunges you straight into the heart of the war — and once again raises the same unanswered question: how can something like this be happening in the very center of Europe today?

“Every film about war ends up being pro-war,” François Truffaut once said in a 1973 interview with Gene Siskel in the Chicago Tribune. In a sense, he’s still right about that even when considering Mstyslav Chernov‘s “2000 Meters to Andriivka,” one of the most visceral, experiential depictions of combat ever captured in a documentary. The Ukrainian director, who won the Best Documentary Feature Oscar for his previous “20 Days in Mariupol,” is clearly glorifying his country’s righteous struggle against the Russian invaders, and in that practical sense, this is not an anti-war film. On an existential level, however, “2000 Meters to Andriivka” is absolutely an anti-war film, one that shows the numbing futility of combat like nothing else viewers may have ever seen. This documentary is horribly uncomfortable, unbearably painful, and, from here, feels overly long as well, but it doesn’t take away from its tragic beauty. Stress and guilt are the two main emotions that I was drawn into during the entire film. It is constant fear, constant small tremors, and deep, heavy sighs after literally every scene. It is very dense and well structured; it is interesting to watch, and it MUST be watched. It is filmed as beautifully as possible and, of course, left me with a terrible feeling of emptiness and guilt. The movie is built to evoke guilt inside you, inside the world even. Are we losing our humanity? With everything that happens on and off screen, this…

I don’t think I’m exaggerating when I say it will likely find a place as one of the most significant war documentaries ever made. Read the full review and the rest of my Cannes Week 1 recap here.

“Live!” A stunning accomplishment. Deeply moving and raw, immediate and existential, 2000 Meters to Andriivka grapples with the immediate horrors of the battlefield as impressively as it engages with the deeper thematic terror of war’s inevitability as an parasite ingrained into the human condition on a biological level. “All that is left is a name” The mission is to liberate Andriivka, but what if there is nothing left to liberate? “So, what are we fighting for?” Driving the russians out and reclaiming the territory is a symbolic victory. Few believed any more ground could be gained. There’s nothing tangible there, just rubble and ruin. But to put a flag in it is to announce that they will not be broken…

“I know the russians will continue to reduce cities to a state where there aren’t even bricks left, and the longer it all goes on the less the world will care about it. I’m afraid this land will remain a frozen frontline for years.” Scorched land. Scorched trees. Ash. Bullets. Rubble. Bodies. Unbearable violence. Unbelievable bravery. Western news like some cold commentary from a different planet. A cat. A flag. Hope for a future so many will not see. Names of heroes that echo in the night. “What if this war is until the end of our lives?”

What if this war is for the rest of our lives? Mystyslav Chernov’s follow up to the Oscar winning doc 20 Days in Mariupol follows Ukranian volunteer soldiers on a counteroffensive to take back the village of Andriivka. It’s as harrowing you might expect in the heat of the firefights, with much of the action captured via helmet cameras providing for a literal first person POV. But it’s some of the films quiet moments in between firefights that hit hardest. Hearing the volunteer soldiers muse on their reasons for joining the front lines, their hopes for their potential post war lives, but also the sinking realization that an end to their fight may never happen in their lifetime. The film left…

“This is our land. These fields, these forests, everything will grow back. Everything blooms again.” 20 Days in Mariupol, 2000 Meters to Andriivka—2 films too many on a senseless invasion; 200 more of these documentaries we don’t want, on wars we don’t need, all for land, power, and imaginary gods.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, each one of us had to make a choice. I took a camera and started filming. Back in 2023, my review for Mstyslav Chernov’s debut Academy Award winning documentary, ’20 Days in Mariupol’, became notorious for bashing on its mundane filmmaking. But in the midst of what is still one of my hottest takes on this app, I also gave praise for the filmmaker cum war journalist’s grit for putting himself at immense risk for getting the footage that the world needed to see, documenting the fall of Mariupol to highlight the palpable dangers of Russia’s invasion on Ukraine. And now, two years later, Chernov returns with yet another documentation of another chapter of the ongoing…

Fighting for every single house, trench, and tree that brave soldiers before you have already fought for seems like something that belongs to the last century, but somehow, it is still a reality in this day and age. This kind of destruction was supposed to be something confined to the history books, yet with the fallen trees and mortar holes, it feels like Verdun all over again. My respect goes out to those who defend their homeland, and my utter disregard goes to those who invade it.

2000 Meters to Andriivka is a devastatingly raw and immersive documentary by Mstyslav Chernov that delivers an unflinching look at the brutal reality of modern trench warfare through the eyes of Ukrainian soldiers fighting for every inch of land.

Brutal. One of the only documentaries to genuinely move me. The dichotomy between the short distance between them and the village, and the time it took to get there is startling. The entire mile it takes them to get to the village is contained within a ~25ft wide wooded area that they call a “forest” and yet it takes them months to get there. Countless numbers of men dead for a mile of barren land over the course of months,…

Director Mstyslav Chernov’s previous doccie, ’20 Days in Mariupol’ was only valuable because I knew what to use and what to throw away. He made it appear like only the Russians were fighting and ignored context. Viewers would have fallen for the propaganda. But the faces of suffering citizens is always an education no matter what they believe. War is hell. It’s telling that ‘2000 Meters to Andriivka’ is, instead, truthful, an important lesson. Chernov has removed the blinkers to…

When the enemy is making a false movement, we must take good care not to interrupt him. Harrowing documentary, modern warfare is terrifying. So many people died trying to control the city of Bakhmut, and this film only depicts a microcosm of the greater battle. I thought the film did a great job in characterizing the soldiers. They are asking the big questions every day, why is Russia doing this, why are they doing this, when is the war going…

A deeply impressive and fascinating documentary about the horrific events of the Russo-Ukrainian War, which is truly devastating to witness. The actual objective isn’t particularly complex: we follow soldiers as they advance towards and attempt to capture a village. But the fact that this war is happening so close to home, while it’s almost impossible to comprehend just how brutal things really are, makes this an incredibly intense experience. The headcam footage in particular provides some absolutely shocking images, with…

Seen pieces of this documentary as combat footage but often without any context. Context is what made it horrifying and real. Names and stories of those who behind the GoPros made it real. Not an easy watch unless you are addicted to this kind of footage like me. Comparable to the Chosen Company documentaries on YouTube.
