it’s made very clear that diana’s evil spirit is a metaphor for depression. when sophie was in the mental health facility, diana made her stay miserable. when sophie stops taking her medicine, diana appears. diana is ever present in the darkness and consumes all of sophie’s joy, dictates her behavior, and causes her to have difficulty relating to people. diana, unchecked, destroys sophie’s relationships. there’s already some trouble here: 1. the villain might ultimately be a metaphor, but the vehicle for that metaphor is still a “scary” mentally ill girl prone to horrible violence. 2. sophie herself is constantly referred to as “crazy” and has very little screen time. the focus is not on her struggle with mental illness, but…

Likable characters… Solid Acting… Unique Rules… Is this a horror movie or am I dreaming? It IS a horror movie, and it’s done right; especially in today’s world where almost every “horror movie” is complete and utter shit. This movie on the other hand is very fun, smart, and likable! And the best part is that it feels quite aware of it’s self. The Witch, The Conjuring 2, and Lights Out… 2016 you’re on a roll! Recommended to people who know what a real horror movie is…

An under-appreciated gem. The rules are clear, and the plot is simple, but I love the cleverness. The movie comes up with some fun ways to play with the setup and doesn’t ocerstay it’s welcome. If I have any disappointment, it’s with the abrupt ending that doesn’t live up to the playfulness of everything else.

Really good if you just want to feel some good scares. Story isn’t really fleshed out too well but then again it is only an 80 minute movie so I don’t think that was really the goal. Interesting concept for a horror movie though and definitely a terrifying antagonist

It is a highly engaging film with a solid conclusion; however, the story, the mysteries, and the internal logic could certainly have been elevated to a higher level. The performances, atmosphere, and pacing were well-balanced and effective. While it had the potential to be something far more extraordinary, psychological, and devastating, a good horror movie that successfully maintained its momentum “Keep The Lights Out”

Light mode with full brightness on a phone would be Diana’s final boss. I watched this movie back in 2016 and I remember thinking the lesson at the end was if you have mental problems then you should kill yourself. Many years later I figured that I misremembered that lesson. No I didn’t. Otherwise some good ideas for scares, albeit mostly in the form of jump scares. If you want some novel spooks then check it out. If you want a decent story then find something else to watch for the evening.
