I used to go to sunday school and the weekend this came out they gave us notices to show our parents saying “Do not take your kids to see this movie. In The Golden Compass book series they fight God.” I gave the letter to my dad. He looked at it, looked at me, and then drove to the movie theater and we saw this. The God-fighting is a later book and Dad was disappointed. EDIT: Since this is my biggest review, as a bonus I’ll also let you know my confirmation name was Wolfgang.

Phillip Pullman’s His Dark Materials series are not the easiest novels to adapt from. Although their main character is a young girl the themes, events and structure of the novels are more suitable for adults. Chris Weitz’s The Golden Compass makes lots of mistakes in its adaptation and the worst of them is that its narrative style and its depiction of the novel is more childish than the original books. The movie is visually convincing but it doesn’t have an idea what to do with Pullman’s elaborate and somehow confusing novel. Characters are one dimensional, their motivations are not clear, none of them are exciting and the main character is so clichéd and predictable that the audience loses interest in her fate. This movie was met with such criticism and had such a bad box office performance that the producers decided to abandon the franchise. That was a right decision. His Dark Materials deserves better than this.

A história do filme em si é maravilhosa, o CGI é algo esplêndido também, mas não ter um final concreto é horrível. O filme tinha condições de fazer algo que concluísse parcialmente e seguissem os livros, mas de resto, filme bom para sessão da tarde.

I rewatched this as I recently finished the book and I think it’s a good thing that the other two weren’t adapted. There is so much detail in the first book that is impossible to capture on screen, evidently. So, as a stand alone film it is okay, but as an adaption, it is subpar.

Pros: the daemons look good, the bears look good and the effects generally look good. I watched this in 2025 and thought everything had held up well for a movie almost 20 years old. Nicole Kidman as Mrs Coulter is great, as is Sam Elliot as Lee Scoresby. Cons: I get that adaptations must differ, but they’re too cowardly to show Asriel sacrificing a child and instead we get a sanitised ending (which would have made sequels difficult) and the pacing is off too.

The plot is somewhat confusing. Basically its about this girl played by Dakota Blue Richard who is whisked away to another realm as she refuses to stay with her aunt played by Nicole Kidman. From there she meets a talking Polar bear voiced by Ian McKellan and that’s pretty much it. Not great but I’m glad I watched it as it took me 19 years to watch it
