there’s a part of me that believes in hope, love, and the endless beauty of the universe, that marvels at the wonders humanity is able to create, that knows despite everything there is something in us worth saving. and there’s a part of me that fucking hates everyone, that sometimes wants to throw up my hands in anger and defeat and sit in a lawn chair and watch the world nuke itself. the only time those two parts overlap and merge into one coherent thought is when i watch this movie

beyond the confines of star ratings, beyond reviewing, possibly even beyond the boundaries of earth itself – this movie doesn’t shoot you in the face so much as it opens up a wormhole from which a 2.5 hour blast of fire and profanity engulfs the entirety of humanity. michael shannon as a racist hick, henry rollins as a cop, and an exploding KKK gathering appear in the first 15 minutes. there is a scene of two rats having sex and moments later several dismembered limbs are stuffed in a bucket that oozes blood. this film is 2.5 hours. in this world car crashes, gunplay, violence, jokes, music, clothing, use of light and color, set pieces and filming techniques become infinitely…

Michael Bay at his uncompromising, relentless best—an unsettling look at modern-day American institutions and corruption disguised as a classic buddy-cop comedy—which also works perfectly thanks to Will Smith and Martin Lawrence’s electrifying chemistry as well as some characteristically frightening one-liners. From beginning to end, it’s extremely aggressive and combative. Loud, dominating, politically charged, and fucking crazy. Fantastic film. Bay’s Bad Boys films are by far my favourites of his, particularly this one. Unapologetically indulgent and literally full of instances where you don’t know whether to laugh or stare on in terror since the similarities to real-life circumstances are so stark.

??/100 Michael Bay unhinged, but since he’s always loose, then what do we call this titan of horror, fucked-up ideals, “comedy”, and rollicking rollercoaster mechanics? A masterwork I guess. Also a cinematic prism if there ever was one, only in the sense that it’s completely free from decency but aware of its material and utterly confident in every frame. It distorts the very images that are being sent towards us, as if an unrefined and addled experience will distract from the actual *content* of the film, but it’s not like Bay gives a fuck what we think anyway. Not a second of its rat-fucking, KKK energy is inherently enjoyable, but the eerie fascination that I continue to have with it will never fade. Cinema as an assaultive journey of perpetual sunsets and slow-motion sliminess. Let’s beam it into the stars. Maybe the martians can figure it out.

“We’re Americans, okay?” This one opens with the insecure, immature, hyper-violent macho duo as undercover Klansmen (Will Smith framed in a slo-mo, low-angle hero shot dual-wielding in front of a burning cross) and ends with them literally invading Cuba, heroically performing an extrajudicial massacre with the CIA and using a giant yellow Hummer to detonate a poor housing community. Probably the most ideologically incoherent and repulsively maximalist depiction of American exceptionalism/imperialism ever crafted, and because of that also probably the most honest one. I always want to like this movie more than I do and I don’t know if sitting down for a more committed and attentive watch would improve or hurt the experience. It’s so long, so dumb, and so bombastic, which is to say, it’s so Bay. I respect Bay for going all out on this in maybe his most unrestrained film, but I’m not sure I have the strength to properly enjoy it.

75/100 “I’ve got a Police Commissioner so far up my ass, if he spits it’s coming out of my mouth.” Right there with the first one for me. Still an enjoyable time but I’m giving the edge to the original just because of it being the first movie.
