Ive been really obsessed with watching mountain climbing docs lately. Partially because Alex Honnold climbed that building, but also I’ve been playing a lot of Cairn (which is bonkers good). Anyways, this was solid, I got emotional at the Jose Gonzalez needle drop. Hubris will take people to some crazy ass places.

Meru is another climbing documentary from Netflix and director of Free Solo. Jimmy Chin directs and returns as a supporting character but this time following an expedition to be the first ever people to scale the gigantic mountain in India called Meru. Cold conditions add a new element, as these storms can rage on for days at a time adding an entirely unique set of obstacles. The camera work was special yet again and I was shocked that they seem to be filming from a different nearby mountain. The interpersonal drama is super interesting, with the reveal of Conrad’s wife as truly shocking. The Renan injury and journey up Meru was maddening at times, but I guess I can’t argue with the results. The aesthetics of desert climbing in Free Solo are more cinematic to me than the snow, but this journey is enthralling and a fascinating look at this insane feat.

Not as gripping as free solo but definitely worth it. Jimmy Chin is a wizard. Climbing those mountains is hard as f*ck but climbing and capturing everything at the same time is just crazy.

A towering tribute to the remarkable power of human courage. (And human stupidity.) Like seriously, these guys are unbelievably brave! (But also hella dumb.)

S
climbers really form this like personal beef with certain mountains very deep in their soul as if the mountain can reciprocate this beef (sometimes the mountain deadass does but this one let these guys slide)
-
S
not really more than a long youtube but definitely some questionable decision making in the mountains!

That shot of Conrad crying at the summit is just breathtaking.

The story is great but as a documentary pretty middle of the road.

These guys are mentally ill and I’m so happy for them that they found each other

This might be crazier than free solo upon rewatch.

There’s no explanation for why people do things like that. Probably because once you’re so high up there, everything else feels small.

incredibly moving and well put together film. cool to see jimmy and conrad climbing together, and renans comeback story was so moving. for how shitty the conditions were the filming was insane. definitely a fav.

Holy fuck that guy married his dead best friends wife. Holy fuck that guy climbed to 20,000 ft with broken vertebrae, had a stroke, and still made it

I feel like I watched a group of Despicable Me–style Minions successfully perform brain surgery. Like holy fuck that was impressive but also wow you should have adult supervision No but seriously this isn’t like Free Solo where the risks are inherent, there’s actually just some seriously poor decision making here with things that don’t even have to do with climbing. And omg the B plot about Conrad and his dead climbing partner’s wife is eyebrow raising
-
H
Wow
-
B
so good. the doc definitely displays the obsessive nature of the 3 climbers and how it led to some poor decision making, but the effort and dedication of the climbers is just so impressive to watch. jimmy is also so cool

Mountaineers will be like “damn I almost died that was the worst thing I’ve ever experienced” and then will be like “ok so round 2?”

4 stars because this is really cool and the filming is so cool. whole thing feels like the old patagonia ads. but also conrad marries his dead best friends wife? and renan basically has a stroke on the mountain? i’m still in horror at the trench foot shot towards the beginning of the movie

the whole movie is one bad decision after another. their poor wives!

The ascent is an extremely impressive physical feat, particularly for Renan. He and Jimmy seem like nice enough guys, making them easier to spend time with than the vacant Alex Honnold in Free Solo. While I appreciate the efficient pacing within a 90-minute runtime, they could do more to explain, in layman’s terms, what is so technically challenging about certain pitches. There’s nothing comparable to The Boulder Problem in Free Solo. It’s also nowhere near as suspenseful or twisty a story as Touching the Void, still the gold standard for this kind of doc.

This is obsession: three experienced mountain climbers are in a tent hanging off a cliff face at 16,000 feet in northern India, and one of them appears to have just had a stroke (he in fact did). Paraphrased, “So, do you think we should go back or push on for the summit.” “Yeah, sure, let’s give it a shot, he’ll probably be OK.” No spoilers here about whether they summited the previously unconquered peak. It doesn’t matter; the ego and…

This might be the best documentary I’ve ever watched. The stuff these guys went through is actually insane I thought it was over at 40 minutes and I still had an hour left. Idk why but I’ve been so drawn to the mountains recently and stuff like this is so amazing to me. I mean these guys accomplished something so insane it’s hard to describe.

Solid, (review & rating) probably spoiled by the other fantastic climbing docs

what do you mean he was in a coma then suddenly scaled meru
-
A
The amount of adversity these guys faced and persevered through is absolutely insane. Conrad loses multiple climbing partners, Jimmy miraculously survives a 2,000 foot fall in a massive avalanche, and Renan has a horrifying head and neck injury that leaves him within inches of death or lifelong paralysis but he somehow manages to make it through and then actively has a stroke during the Meru climb and STILL makes it to summit and back, and they’re the first ones in…

High quality movie that was pretty good but was a bit all of the place. I understand why all the details were included because it told a story but idk. I will acknowledge that there were lots of stunning things that happened in the movie (bear death experience after near death experience) but IDK I wasn’t like on the edge of my seat. I think it is because I knew a lot about their stories before having watched Torn and…

Choppy and sloppily told in some parts, but pretty fascinating nonetheless. Renan’s story was particularly captivating. Extremely interesting psychologically, fearless yet astonishingly selfish.

1. Idk what’s wrong with these dudes. Who is literally climbing a mountain where you could easily die and when your equipment breaks you just put tape on it and keep going. Like bro what 💀 2. Also, genuinely wonder what the cost aspect of a climb like that is. Food, travel, gear, etc. It has to be insane.

Mfs with a loving wife and kids at home. The guy that was almost crippled 5 months prior left without telling his gf he was doing this climb? Maybe it’s moralizing of me, but I just can’t with extreme athletes sometimes.

spent almost the whole doc very satisfied and impressed blah blah blah. then however we hit “my best friend died and i left my fiance and married his widow and somehow everyone in bozeman knows im a serial flirter/cheater and am now divorced” and i was suddenly verrrrry disenchanted. jimmy is better vibes, but this is his film so do with that what you will. somehow renan is the most gripping subject here. should he have been on that mountain? no probably not but he survived and that’s the difference i guess.
-
C
Shanti om indeed

I’d love to be romantic about mountains and whatnot but I still can’t get over the fact that Conrad married his best friends widow Also justice for Renan I’d watch a whole documentary on him EDIT: Just learned Renan is a CC alum and Conrad is now divorced. The universe works in mysterious ways

After all they went through, the aborted first climb, a team member bashing his head and eating couscous for days on end they finally made it. Sleep in a tent on a cliff face that is attached by ropes above is just really scary.
