“When I was a little boy, my first memory was this dream of falling.” How incredibly well done this documentary is genuinely amazed me As someone who’s utterly obsessed with climbing deans mentality fascinates me. The ability to stare fear and death in the face and still conquer that challenge is otherworldly. To be the best you kinda have to be crazy.

Mesmerizing would be the right word… I personally think that The Dark Wizard is an amazing documentary about one of the legend of climbing, Dean Potter. I really like how deep it goes, showing how troubled and vulnerable he was while being one of the best in his discipline. In four episodes we get a detailed look at this intense human being, by the help of multiple of his old friends. The footage in this documentary is amazing, perfectly showing the amazing feats of Dean. I really like how it’s edited which each episode showing a new aspect of his life while adding buildup to the main subject. It’s constructed greatly making it so easy and satisfying to watch. Also,…

They made Alex Honnold the villain for some reason

This isn’t a perfect analogy but Dean was Zlatan (they even looked similar) while Alex is Messi. Zlatan is cool, interesting, and divisive. Messi is just a machine made to do something and is sort of unfair. Messi is also a weirdo and corporate shill but the family gives him a patina of normalcy. I cannot say I’d rather be Zlatan but I can feel more for him even though his whole personality was to unknowable. Watching his friends, his dog at the end really got to me.

Really enjoyable viewing, binged it Did not expect to see Alex Hannold just absolutely overwrite Dean from history like wtf The video of his last flight and the raven …

A story about the battle between ego death and death itself. I was honestly surprised by how emotional I was throughout episode four, even though I knew exactly was what coming. Epic, poignant, frustrating, inspiring. Also Alex Honnold is perhaps one of the most terrifying humans walking planet earth.

Muy buen documental. El me parece un tipazo, incomprendido por casi todos. Realmente era un artista, lo quiero mucho.

How beautiful that all his friends felt the same urge to drop everything and drive to Yosemite when they heard the news… only fitting that he died there what a legend

It was really interesting to see all these people who so deeply loved Yosemite in a very specific way that I wasn’t familiar with. I’ve spent a lot of time around people who love Yosemite just as much but relate to it very differently, and I have my own complex relationship with it. This made me want to go back eventually, because Yosemite really is singular in so many respects. A lot of small worlds orbit those rocks. I thought…

Beautiful, thrilling, and tragic doc about an extraordinary and flawed person. It really captures the mystique around Dean he was so known for, and had a really nuanced discussion about mental health that took me by surprise. I also loved how it explored the idea behind Dean’s nickname “the Dark Wizard” It seems like many extreme athletes try to take something crazy and outlandish, and shrink it into something more manageable. Like Alex Honnold, for example, who makes some awesome…

Simplemente gracias! 🙏🏻

What scared me most about Dean Potter was that I understood him. This wasn’t really a documentary about climbing to me. It was about what happens when adrenaline, competition and the need to keep proving yourself become part of your identity. Danger seemed to give Potter a sense of clarity and purpose that ordinary life couldn’t. But as he got older and watched Alex Honnold and a younger generation push the sport forward, his competitiveness began to feel less like…

Usually when I watch these extreme sports docs I never understand what drives these people to participate in suicidal activities. This does it. This doc felt like an unveiling of a mind and philosophy

I am slightly biased since I think climbing docs might be the peak of cinema. This has to be my favorite. Having access to someone’s diary after they die is OP for docs also feels alittle wrong. I don’t know if I’ve ever felt such a complete understanding of a person in any media as this doc was able to present. Lastly THE DARK WIZARD is such a badass nickname and Alex honnold was a villain in this lol

My opinion may be based, but this documentary definitely rocks. Soared above and beyond my expectations.

Wow. Just wow. My dad really has instilled his love of climbing documentaries within me. This is probably the greatest documentary I’ve ever seen. The most emotional, stunning, beautiful, intriguing sports story but really just story in general. dean potter is absolutely fascinating. His mysticism and allure isn’t believable at first but by the end it’s just undeniable. If you watch this, which you most definitely should, do NOT look up any spoilers.

Wow, what a tragic but truly amazing story about a complicated man. He finally got everything he wanted 🙁 I will probably be thinking about this one for awhile.

This documentary was beautifully and powerfully done. Dean is a complicated person who contained greatness and who was at war with the darkness within. Mortimer and Rosen masterfully walk the line between honesty and compassion. Arguably the best climbing film to come out in quite some time.

I’m really glad they made a documentary about Dean Potter, so we get to see the dark magic he left behind. Before watching this, I had no idea about him at all. And boyyy, how glad I am to finish this series. I hope that from this series people can see how he left a huge impact for the climbing community and be inspired by him. This documentary also wasn’t afraid to mention that Dean is also just a human being, and reminded us how we’re all flawed in our own way.

Ddavidsokol110 8 月 16, 2026
Dean verbalizing that his attempt to transcend the human limitations of flight was a metaphor for transcending ego, pride, and jealousy really moved me. There’s just so much to take away from this docuseries especially for those who climb and connect with nature as an outlet for their emotions and creativity. Loved this.

A sort-of companion piece to Free Solo and Dawn Wall that hurtles, with a sense of inevitability to an ending that you hope isn’t going to eventuate. This was really dynamically paced with the heart-stopping moments you’d expect and a surprising amount of heart. Also very funny that Alex Honnold is kind of a rage-baiting villain in this, but obviously has a massive amount of respect for Potter (the subject).
