Has some okay sections but for this 4-part-epic-ambition to work, it had no choice but to be great. Not good, not decent, but fucking great. It isn’t. Feels like a slow mini series, largely unfocused and plodding. Confused, obvious, corny music ruins some decent scenes. For a 3 hour film there’s a disappointing lack of momentum with each hour feeling more like a siloed ‘episode’ instead of a cohesive narrative. Love the on-location wideshots and varied environments. Production design is generally great and large scale, but let down by lacklustre direction. Mixed with the wildly varying performances and bad accents are some vaguely interesting characters that might improve as these films go on. The last few mins is a montage of clips for the second film, looks better than this one but still an extremely awkward and weird way to end this. Crazy ambitious for a 4-part Waterworld prequel but I’m glad someone has the courage to do what’s right.

Was not crazy about this but then it ends with a montage that’s really just a trailer for Part 2 and I can’t lie, it looked cool. You got me, Costner.

History Channel slop. And while I admire the ambition, this is nothing more than an embarrassing vanity project. This is television, plain and simple, from the look, to the pace, to the performances––and not even good TV. It’d be decent on the History Channel, pretty bad on AMC, atrocious on HBO. But to put this in theaters? As the first part in a 12 HOUR SAGA?? Please. Setting aside the story, the movie looks ugly. The ONLY saving grace is the natural beauty of the American west, which is near impossible to fuck up. Gray digital flatness, underlit night scenes looking like reality TV. Costner can’t frame a shot, let alone block a scene. It’s anti-cinematic, everything communicated with bland…

70 Only Kevin Costner would release a three hour film that is essentially a mere 25% piece of the full picture just to spite the producers of Yellowstone. You see this miniseries I’m making? Paramount can’t have it, Hulu can’t have it. But movie theaters can. That’s a proper ego. Old school hollywood star type shit. If you’re not re-financing your beach home for your art, you’re doing it wrong. Listen, I’m going to be frank with you all – this is about as cornball as it gets. If you’re looking to see it for GOD COSTNER (credit to LexG) and the semi-ironic bit of supporting a mega flop and reclaiming it during opening weekend, that’s fine, more power to…

Kevin Costner’s character shows up and is immediately flirted with by an attractive prostitute who is 30 years younger than him. This is a subtle sign that he is also the writer and director.

Going on a hunger strike until I can see chapters 2-5 of this. I’ve seen people call this a self-indulgent vanity project and I say good! Indulge away! Give me something big and vain and personal! Honestly, big respect to Costner for doing a grand Western epic with three or four semi connected plot lines, none of which pay off in this first chapter, but I want to keep watching and find out if any of these settlers found their new Jerusalem. It looks gorgeous and plus it has Michael Rooker, Will Patton and Jeff Fahey, which is good enough for me.

Could be worse; could be a lot better. Visually beautiful, but unimaginative plot-wise. Definitely didn’t need to be 3 hours long; I was zoning out by the end 😭 It’s got that old-school epic orchestral soundtrack which is a bit surreal in a 2020s movie. Not sure that I could pay full attention to 9 more hours of this 😅
-
L
Not sure how you can have such a long film and not much of significance happens, but at least Kevin Costners ego was stroked. Not adding to the collection
-
P
This could have been great. There are tired old tropes and Sheridanesque excesses (the fresh-faced prostitute falls for the stoic gunman 30 years her senior), but there is enough sublime landscape and terrifying set pieces to keep the eye engaged. Why, then, is it edited with a knife and fork? I refuse to believe a better solution could not be found than to cram it all with no regard into a 3 hour feature. Watch Lonesome Dove instead.
-
C
I admire Kevin Costner’s mission to bring back the epic Westerns and appreciate the efforts made to balance the story to cover both sides. Abbey Lee and Jamie Campbell Bower were great. If you’re wanting a history lesson on the civil war, you won’t find it here but it’s definitely entertaining. It’s a shame it’s not worked out financially (bad advertising) but I will be patiently waiting for them to take part 2 off the shelf (fingers crossed)

First watch It’s taken me three degrees, a published thesis, a mainstream book, and almost two decades as a professional writer to learn that self-investment is the only kind of investment worth making. When I first started working a real job (shout out Great Ad), I was 13-years-old, and I had two priorities: making money, and getting away with doing nothing for it. By 15, I had come to understand that this was impossible as a non-nepo and that to…

So briefly reading up on the history of this product and apparently ‘Kevin Costner’ had conceived this project since the late 1980s. ‘Costner’ envisioned as the title would suggest this be a multi part quadrilogy and has said to of sank $38 Million of his own money into it. Part 1 and Part 2 were more or less filmed back to back but due to the Box Office flop Part 1 proved to be, Part 2 has been withheld a…

M
Just so incredibly slow. I know it’s a western and the classic slow build is a welcome one but this is just plodding. Also despite the excessive run time it’s awfully disjointed and confusing at times. The likelihood of there being a conclusion is surely very slim as who will greenlight another six hours of this? Assuming of course the second film gets a release! I wanted to love this and instead I tolerated it.

The decisions made in the making of this film have truly baffled me. A 12-hour epic western split into four parts. On paper that sounds interesting to me, especially coming from the man who made Dances With Wolves. But Horizon – Chapter 1 is empty. I’d almost go as far as calling it soulless, although that does feel harsh. It was nearly two hours in before the film presented a character who actually stood out with some kind of personality.…

The ambition is admirable, but doesn’t take away from how doomed to fail this is and not for unjustified reasons. What I can definitely praise it for is the direction, camerawork and setting. It creates one of the best Western atmospheres I’ve seen in a while and shows there was a professional at work who deservedly won the Oscars 35 years ago and since then hasn’t lost his skill. What drags it down compared to that is how overstuffed the…

Beautiful cinematography. Great premise. Film format was such a nonsensical decision though. In 2024, it could’ve been sold to like literally any streaming platform and would’ve been a whole new Yellowstone for Costner. Such a baffling decision for such a wonderfully shot project.

This movie equally stunned me as I did when I first saw it. To see a western cowboy in high definition is crazy to watch. If anyone knows how I rank things, there’s GOAT level A movies, GOAT level B movies, & GOAT level C movies… this was a GOAT C movie. Seems scattered, & not super well thought out. Probably because we never got part 2. You get dropped into scenes wondering how you got there, & leave wondering why Lots of…

Really good movie that I saw in theaters. I loved the different perspectives you saw depending on the location. The only issue was the fact it was really long, and there was supposed to be several parts. Trying to watch the several parts, if it ever releases, would take an extremely long time to do but besides that I love the movie.

Kevin Costner has the most unintentionally hilarious sex scene I’ve seen in ages here, holy shit. As Abbey Lee sweet talks him before a pity fuck, he’s just laying there, half-asleep, uninterested. She slides him in, still no reaction. She’s grinding, Costner doesn’t even put his hands on her. If it weren’t for the delicate music working over time to convince us this is a tender moment, a flash of frontier love that just can’t happen due to the harsh…

Absolutely beautiful cinematography showing off the American Midwest. Autumn colours, golden hour shooting, love it. I think there might be a good film on the cutting room floor here but it’s all a bit of a jumbled, choppy cut, mess. Plenty of acting talent here and I’m sure if Kevin ever gets to finish this Saga the seemingly random disconnected stories might come together. At present it’s a bit of a Cowboys and Indians fever dream.

The Apache raid near the beginning promises great stuff and I was poised for an epic treat. Unfortunately, the remaining 2hrs and 30mins slows down into a rather ponderous series of overlong scenes that all set up plotlines that will pay off in episodes 2, 3 and 4. However, looks like ep 2 is under lock and key in a New Line safe somewhere, and it’s unlikely that 3 or 4 will ever get into production. So what we’re left…

I see the vision. I see what the long-term, 12+ hour film experience. That’s what this first chapter is, an experience. Costner basically spends the entire runtime of this creating and presenting his vision of the West. It’s brutal and tragic, for everyone. I think one of the boldest (though honestly not great) creative decisions is that Costner himself doesn’t appear until nearly an hour into this. We, up until this point, essentially have 1 named character. For most of…

i feel like they just wanted an excuse to blow up a bunch of shit as fast as possible and show a bunch of violence and gore without any real meaning. the area they shot is beautiful but the cinematography kinda whack. why does that mom have perfectly curled hair in a style that she wouldn’t be able to do by herself after she was stuck underground for days? i like that they chose to use the Apache language, but…

If the second one ever comes out it might help save some of the problems with this. The pacing is horrendous yet it still has a smattering of excellent scenes. I do respect the lack of CGI and on location filmmaking which helps it look spectacular and classical. I don’t think I would love to rewatch this but you never know.

It’s hard to judge a film that so clearly needs the follow-up Part 2 (and possibly parts 3 and 4) to give us a clearer picture of the overall story arcs of several stories depicted in this epic Western. Having said that, I really enjoyed the first part of Kevin Costner’s passion project. The money is on screen with massive sets and a huge cast. And I felt a sense of unknowing and brutality for both the native American Indians…

I mean, it’s a parable about hubris, right? Not the actual movie, god no, you need to have a complete story to be a parable, but the story of this film series. Costner mortgaged a mansion and spent 38 million of his own dollars to make this and didn’t bother to listen when people told him the script wasn’t that interesting. He’d done this all before, after all, with Dances with Wolves, don’t you remember? Surely that meant it was…

Beautifully shot but unfortunately too long and winding for me. It gives the feel of a series such as Yellowstone, but instead just part 1 of this Costner film series is 3 hours long! There are too many characters, on different paths to fully understand enough about each of their lives. There are some brilliant performances by Sienna Miller, Jamie Campbell Bower and Kevin Costner which were the highlights for me. Ultimately though, by the end I felt like I’d watched a very slow episode of a soap opera.
-
M
Kevin’s Gate Well, not quite, but this is a folly nonetheless. A series of vignettes – some inspired, some not – ultimately all leading to, well, nowhere, because this is a three hour first act to a proposed four part magnum opus. Someone ought to have told Costner that, sadly, this isn’t how the movie industry works now and that both he and the audience will only end up disappointed. He should have made this as a TV series.

It’s not often I think something would work better as a TV show but this one would. It was a long film, although it didn’t feel that long. It jumped around the different characters and storylines enough for you not to get bored. Telling the story of the American frontier and trailblazers and settlers going West is an epic one, and so probably needs a 3 hour film plus 3 sequels to tell the story, but using The Lord of…

Some familiar complaints: action scenes too dark to discern what’s actually happening (or who it’s happening to); ensemble cast too large to get to know, with overlong gaps between some of their appearances. The positives: some of the scenery – the real American outdoors – is stunningly photographed (brought back fond memories of playing Red Dead Redemption 2); the inclusion of (some) perspectives from the indigenous population. For such a long film (and an ‘Part 1’ at that) the end seems both rushed and truncated, with a very odd 5-minute clip show of (presumably) Chapter 2. Whether it will ever be seen is another matter.

When there’s no dialogue and the stellar landscape shots are pumped with the wrought but emotive score, I sorta buy it. Unfortunately those moments can’t sustain the narrative enough.

I’m always game for a good western but this film is far too long with too many separate plot threads that this would of worked better as a TV series.

I appreciate Costner delivering this Fordian epic, but the effect is undercut as this is just a prelude. A 3 hour introduction to a larger story, that at this point, seems dead in the water. Fluctuates between looking drop dead gorgeous and then like any Prestige Television show. Which, was that what this was? A miniseries pitched to the cinema?

Co-written by Jon Baird and Kevin Costner and directed by Kevin Costner (Open Range) ‘Horizon: An American Saga-Chapter 1’ provides the foundation for a four-chapter western chronicling the creation of the Wild West and the (supposed) civilisation of the United States of America. Costner delivers an intriguing and yet imperfect start to proceedings through the careful weaving of multiple narratives, converging in what I imagine will be a torrid, challenging and likely haunting premise justifying the ambition of this cinematic…

I understand what he’s trying to do but it’s just a bit too disconnected at times. I’m going to admit, while I enjoy Wild West movies from time to time. They need to get interesting and try out different things that are out of the norm. This film seems like it follows some of the common tropes in Wild West stories, there isn’t much refreshing in the genre. The fact that this was chapter 1 of more films makes it hard to be invested in the story. It’s good but not too interesting.

Kevin Costner’s slow burn of a Western has beautiful cinematography and solid performances from an all-star cast. It takes a bit to understand what’s going on, and I almost think this would have worked equally well as a TV series, but once the wheels start turning, it does pick up the pace. I really hope those of us not at a film festival get to see Chapter 2, because I feel robbed at not being able to see where this story is going.

With the pulling of Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 2 from theaters, we are left to only speculate what the future holds for Costner’s self-funded crazy passion project.
