This movie is so meta since Willem Dafoe is a vampire in real life as well.

I bet the makeup artists saved so much money working with Dafoe, since he kinda already looks like a vampire.

To any fan of the original Nosferatu and of horrorfilm in general this underrated film is a must see. It is a fictionalised retelling of the making of the mother of all vampire films. It has as its premise that Max Schreck, the actor playing the vampire, actually was one himself. As silly as this may sound, thanks to an amalgamation of perfectly executed visuals, superb storytelling and some majestical acting, it works perfectly. Director Merhige treats his film, above all, as an ode to the original. He manages to conjure up that feel of the early silent movies really well and he actually uses footage from the original film. To his credit, the scenes he shot feel very authentic…

I ♥️ movies about making movies I ♥️ biopics that take interesting creative liberties I ♥️ movies in which Willem Dafoe hams it up big time Shadow of the Vampire is glacially paced and repetitive, but it’s all worth it for that fantastic conclusion. 🧛🏻♂️

Set during the filming of the pretty much groundbreaking horror film Nosferatu as the line between reality and fiction gets blurred, where FW Murnau is not only a perfectionist but the film becomes his own moby dick and he will go to the extremes to make the perfect vampire movie… even if that means to hire a real vampire. While Herzog’s version was a really good adaptation, this one is vastly superior in many ways. Not only the BTS approach makes of this a much unique movie, but director E. Elias Merhige actually attempts and mostly succeed on making the shooting scenes as if we are looking at footage from the 20s. The score by Dan Jones also helps building…

“Our battle is to create art. Our weapon is the moving picture. Because we have it, our paintings will grow and recede and our light will play across living faces that laugh and agonize. We are scientists engaged in the creation of memory… but our memory will neither blur nor fade. Time will no longer be a dark spot on our lungs. They will no longer say ‘you had to have been there’ because, the fact is, we were.”

Willem Dafoe as Nosferatu in a movie about the making of Nosferatu set in an alternate reality where Max Schreck, the actor from Nosferatu was a real life vampire?! And people don’t talk about this?!

Maybe this movie was just too meta but I was really thrown off by the tone, the degree to which the characters just accept the supernatural events and deaths as ‘part of the business’ was a little jarring for me. Perhaps everything was meant to be seen through the lens of Murnau’s insanity, and that explains why everything just keeps on moving? Willem Dafoe carries everything about this movie, his character acting is ridiculously good. This was the first time…

We made a bargain I’ll now rate this film out of 10 in 5 categories Story, Characters, Visuals, Sound, and overall Production. Then I’ll give it a letter grade and corresponding star rating. Story – 9.5: This is a camp little story about the makings of one of early cinema’s favourite monsters, Nosferatu. It’s genuinely silly in its idea that Count Orlock was played by a real vampire going by the alias of Max Schreck and pretending to be an…

This project is more fascinating than frightening, blurring the line between reality and fiction in clever ways. The dry, dark humor and quietly unsettling atmosphere complement each other beautifully, leading to a compelling meditation on artistic obsession and the sacrifices demanded in the pursuit of greatness. John Malkovich and Willem Dafoe bounce off each other perfectly, grounding the bizarre premise in real psychological tension. It is a smart, understated meta-thriller.

sufferer of having a very cool premise that is better than the movie itself. willem dafoe clacking his acrylic nails and the accent work being funnily atrocious makes up for it a little, i guess.

A secret history about the production of Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror, starring Willem Dafoe as a vampire + John Malkovich as F.W. Murnau (and a solid cast overall). ~90 minute run time. Worth a peep if you like Dafoe/Vampires/Murnau/Nosferatu/Dracula.
