“Let them fight.” Honda returns to direct the first color Godzilla film, which features a convoluted plot wherein a pharmaceutical company basically contrives, along with a helpless yet eventually complicit military, to stage a fight between Kong and Godzilla to boost TV ratings on the network they sponsor. It all somehow exists at a tantalizing crossroads of hilariously absurd and unsettlingly plausible. Highlights include Kong getting blackout drunk on his island’s native tribe’s moonshine and a battle with a giant octopus (actually just a real octopus, looking kind of confused on a miniature set).

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 9 of 46 Ranking the King (Kong, that is) While Godzilla Raids Again foreshadowed what this franchise would become for the latter part of the Shōwa period, it is King Kong vs. Godzilla that fully ushers in the era of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Kaiju. If Godzilla was made to cash in on the popularity of the King Kong re-release, and if Mothra was a subtle homage to King Kong, then this was Ishirō Honda finally going all-in and just flat out remaking King Kong, while also tossing Godzilla into the mix. You see, Willis O’Brien, the stop motion animator who brought Kong to life, was looking to make a comeback in the early 60s and…

KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! Though I wasn’t that really big on it the first time I watched it, I also haven’t been able to randomly find myself thinking about this little silly movie. Obviously, our two icons are the best of the film. The human stuff felt more like a plot device to move the story rather than saying anything significant, like in the first film. Then again, I don’t think when you have a movie like this, you are looking to entertain rather than have people thinking about it. And as such, everything with Goji and Kong was a blast. The fighting in Fuji was fun with them just jumping and, I guess, talking s**t to each other in their…

I think I like King Kong better because he’s easier to relate to: prefers to stay home, hairy. Godzilla is the kinda monster who wants to be the center of attention and I ain’t falling for it.

I think I’ll always prefer these disreputable genre films of the past to their slick, modern counterparts. You can see the seams, feel the ceiling of creation, and the innovation and ideas of the artists trying out new things in order to conceive of new images with the intuition and hard work of their bare hands. It’s so much easier for me to feel the soul of the artist, and of the craft. Sometimes their ideas don’t work, but there’s beauty in the mistakes, and in their failure to create exactly what they want. These films are a little bit uncool. They’re not movies that everyone goes back and watches, and because of that, you can carve out a little…

So this is what the Monsterverse has been building to. I’ll be honest, I was surprised at the use of old school effects. The flashy CGI was ditched for standard men in costumes but it works for the most part. Millie Bobby Brown, Kyle Chandler and Rebecca Hall are in blink and you’ll miss it cameos. Literally, I must’ve blinked and missed them because I never saw them once during the film. A brave move to shoot the film in Japanese. It’ll be interesting to see if audiences are cool with that. Don’t believe the recently released trailer. It’s all fake footage like those Marvel ones. All in all, a surprisingly entertaining monster movie and the best thing Monsterverse has offered up so far. Totally worth the HBO Max subscription.

I love how the first time these monsters meet each other Kong starts throwing rocks at Godzilla, but when Godzilla starts spitting fire, Kong goes “yeah, fuck this shit” and leaves like the dickless loser that he is.

King Kong vs. Godzilla é simplesmente impressionante!

Another brutal watch, thank you Toho. That’s a bit of an exaggeration, thinking back now I’m being a little harsh haha The set up for the battle is actually a good premise, however this did not need to be 80% of the movie, these would really be so much better if they were like 40-60 minutes long with a main focus on the kaiju fights since that’s where we’ve pivoted at this point. That being said I found a lot…

Parts do not age well and I am not referring to the effects. Much more campy but the miniatures are still so much fun

Some brain numbing fun of the 60s. Incredible effects work, somewhat interesting characters and undeniably BADASS clash of the two most iconic monster of ALL time. Super fun brain numbing watch

Somehow managed to make Kong’s Island 20x more racist than the original movie. I was excited for King Kong vs. Godzilla because I imagined this being a grand battle between two unstoppable monsters, but it turns out I got clickbaited. For most of its runtime, King Kong vs. Godzilla follows a pair of goofy pharmaceutical workers on a quest to find big news to raise their ratings. In this quest, Osamu and Kinzaburo go to Faro Island, where, after a…

This is such a fart in the bath of a movie – mildly amusing for a second, until the stink hits you. But then the fights are fun, although that Kong suit is pure shite, even for the time period.

Seeing King Kong shove a tree down in Godzilla’s mouth is not something I expected to see but realized it was lowkey kinda smart once you see that the giant lizard it was fighting can shoot flames from its mouth

It’s a wrestling match between the local heal Godzilla and the foreign face Kong put together and sponsored by a greedy drug company looking for promotion and run by a Marx Bros-esque caricature of a rich, morally deficient businessman. It’s maybe not that great of a movie but it sure gives us big boy fighting entertainment for sure. Marionette puppet Kong was a nuts sequence as well, worthy of a Wrestlemania Mt. Fuji entrance. I’m glad this happened so that…

Now we’re cooking! It’s interesting: the Showa Era of Godzilla has a very loose sense of continuity; there’s only a little connective tissue between movies and only a handful of films feel directly related. Even with that being the case, King Kong vs. Godzilla has always felt apart from the rest to me. It feels like a crossover event more than anything else and I almost hesitate to lump it in with its contemporaries. Maybe that’s because the Godzilla suit looks…

Godzilla movie 3/??? -2 stars for the English dub of this movie. The actual fight is silly and delightful. King Kong shoving a tree into Godzillas mouth after getting lightning powers is incredible, the ridiculous human plot and extended brown face scenes are less great 💁🏻♂️

Love how the first time Godzilla shoots his radioactive breath towards, Kong just has this exasperated look on his face like “yeah, nope!” He just wants to lay around on his island and drink berry juice, just leave him alone. He didn’t ask for this Those “island natives” are Japanese people in blackface, I’m reducing my rating for that, not cool

This is genuinely such a fun movie to watch. It’s so goofy and cheesy and the effects by today’s standards are god awful, but it has charm to it and the fights are really fun to watch. It’s the ultimate wrestling match.
-

Extremely stupid but funny, and the suit actors seem like they’re having a blast. American cut, which I assume is inferior, but it’s what plays by default on the criterion box set disc, and besides I kinda dug the dumb space age newscast vibe of the added bits.

It’s Godzilla Thursday. Really convoluted plot that rehashes so much of King Kong and then tries to be funny. Criterion, I don’t know why you have the American dubbed version in this box set but wow should whoever decided that be fired.

Well, there was an attempt at making me care for the characters but it failed. Pacing is pretty rough as well. The score is still fantastic and the miniature models they used were really nice. The tanks were a nice touch. King Kong is absolutely hideous. The Godzilla costume is still nice, but seems to be lacking compared to the original. Maybe it’s because this is the first Godzilla in color? Not sure. The fighting between Kong and Godzilla was…

Damn this shit was awful! Horribly paced, anticlimactic, and ultra-racist. Not to mention not scary. The only creepy part is the first shot of the giant octopus, when it’s dark and you have no idea what you’re looking at. Color is not kind to either costume, either. Not even the triumphant return of Sachio Sakai can save this one unfortunately. Godzilla >>>>>> King Kong any day

LET THEM FIGHT!!! I really enjoyed this quite a bit as soon as we got the fight scenes it became a fucking romp. I love the story of exploitation of Kong in films and exploitation of the Earth causing Godzilla to reappear. Both monsters brought to fight each other because of the greed of man. Now pass that this is a hilarious brawl and from what I know this continues. The fact Kong walks away from Godzilla after the first…

(Spies and Kaiju Marathon: Part 10 of 78) (Toho 2021 4K Blu-Ray with Dolby Atmos Remix Audio Track and Criterion English-translated subtitles) Out of the handful of Godzilla films I’ve seen prior to doing this marathon, this has always been one movie I tend to revisit and think about a lot the most, even if it may not be my favorite out of the bunch.

The big battle that we never thought would happen! Before becoming a big budget franchise in the current age of MonsterVerse Godzilla and Kong movies, the two monsters clashed in this cheesy 60s movie. What’s funny is that King Kong and Godzilla are completely different sizes and strengths. Godzilla stands at a staggering 50 metres (164ft) tall; and he has a sturdy tail, stocky body and of course his iconic atomic breath; whereas King Kong was a measly 15.24 metres…

This feels like probably one of the highest budget Showa Godzilla movies I have seen so far. in todays standards the octopus scenes would not fly, but i think it was a brilliant creative choice to drop a living octopus on a miniature set and let it go rampage and destroy a small village, compositing and Animation where also done super well (keeping in mind how old this movie is)

Through downloading the wrong torrent I found out that the Italian name for this movie is Il trionfo di King Kong, which sucks as a name for obvious reasons, but BY GOD does King Kong NOT triumph in this movie. Seriously, the two fight scenes in this film are a ‘see it to believe it’ kind of thing. Willy: Seeing Kong transported to Japan in that way reminds me of the time I fell asleep and woke up in Australia.

Somehow, this is worse than Godzilla Raids Again (1955). From the blackface to horrendous writing, there’s nothing positive I can say about this movie. It’s doing too many things at once making it messy. Genuinely don’t know how Godzilla as a franchise bounced back from this.

I knew this film would be fucking bonkers as soon as they gave the little kid a cigarette, that shit went hard

Pros: • The movie does a good job at building up the reveal of both Godzilla and King Kong simultaneously at the beginning of the movie • The movie stays pretty faithful to both King Kong and Godzilla’s backstory (like King Kong being on his island) • the blend of models and suitmation hold up well in this movie (at least when it comes to Godzilla, not as much for Kong Kong) • The sets/locations, especially for King Kong’s island,…

Big improvement from the second Godzilla movie. Carries a light hearted adventure feel that’ll appear often in Showa era Godzilla, the pacing issues and lulls in story also become typical but managed fairly well. The movies comes into focus the second half but it feels long to get there.

This is the moldiest King Kong that I’ve ever seen. Every time he showed up in a frame, I thought he might collapse because he looks like he’s rotting away. It made me feel really bad for him. The ADR in this film is atrocious but it makes the film more charming and memorable. King Kong stuffing a tree down Godzilla’s throat was pretty awesome. However, the rest of the fighting in this film is very lame. The film highlights…

Fairly shitass, but good compared to inexplicable tripe like Atragon. Godzilla fights King Kong as a TV ratings ploy by an insane pharmaceutical executive, because why not? King Kong is a guy in a bad sasquatch suit who, as ever, ain’t got shit on Godzilla. At one point King Kong is dropped like a sack of potatoes from a bunch of hot-air balloons onto Godzilla to initiate the final battle, which is a comedy highlight. The movie sets back Pacific…

Decided to watch this version of King Kong vs Godzilla to complete the set, it’s honestly really interesting to return to an early entry in the Godzilla canon after being entrenched in later eras. Seeing people scoff at the idea of giant monsters was pretty charming because a lot of the later movies have these monsters as just regular facts of life. Although, it doesn’t make the most sense when you consider there have been 2 Godzilla movies, Varan, Mothra,…

We scored a full-page display in the newspapers. Why don’t we take a photo of him smiling to put in our ads? Do you think King Kong smiles? We get him to smile. King kong vs godzilla is the first color movie for both godzilla and Kong and it has the things I enjoy so much about the showa era. Nice kaiju fights godzilla deepthroating a tree. One of the weaker that showa has but still a mocie i enjoy. Byeeeeee

We are well and truly in a new era of monster movie. Realism has been thrown aside for full on physical comedy between these two. You can at least appreciate the respect given to the status quo at the beginning, to pay homage to both of their origins and how they been left in their own series. The writers clearly wanted to keep building tension until the final battle that we’ve all come for; it’s just a shame the stakes…

An absolutely ridiculous movie with a solid concept, Kong vs Godzilla ends up being an unsatisfying, but at least occasionally very funny, kaiju film. Big Pharma is now apparently in the Big Creature game, as a guy named Tako, who I lovingly just referred to as Professor Mustache in my notes, sends a team of reporters to what may or may not yet be Skull Island to abscond with Kong. There, they meet some real collar-tugging racist portrayals of island…

I loved seeing ‘kong island’ (they call is something else in this film) and I thought it was cool how they filmed the giant octopus scene and how that originally it was written for Godzilla x Frankenstein so that explains why Kong got supercharged when hit with electricity, because he was meant to be Frankenstein originally in the script. I actually loved this film and I liked the 1 second of stop motion animation during the second fight scene. I…

King Kong vs. Godzilla was a historic event for the burgeoning franchise in a multitude of ways. If you can look past the movie’s very insensitive (though unfortunately typical of the time period) portrayal of South Pacific Islanders (brownface and all), you’re in for a super fun time, but I wouldn’t blame you if you can’t, because it can get preeeetty rough. Thankfully, this only takes up the first third of the film, but it takes up the majority of…

Godzilla movie formula is really forming here. Goofy science character? Check Two dudes in rubber suits smacking the crap out of each other? Check A TON of miniature work? Check! The minis are so cute in this one. That first scene where they’re scrambling to escape? Wonderful. Kong’s suit feels like it’s a mean mugging Bumble, and that’s fairly charming. Things to keep an eye out for – teleporting crewmen, dolls, very interesting use of rear projection, communicating with Godzilla,…

Great Goji Marathon 2026 #5 God this film grows on me more and more every viewing. I think it’s seriously hilarious. The satire comedy being full force here is something I think the series forgets it has up its sleeve. I think the main cast all got a bit of funny up their sleeve but Tako is so good in this. The two mightiest monsters of all time! …In the most colossal conflict the screen has ever known! Always enjoyed the idea of a crossover in general, and through my odyssey of watching all the Godzilla movies, I heard this one was one of the best of the early years. Of the Godzilla movies that I wanted to see for years, King Kong Vs. Godzilla was an arguably ant the top of that list and when I finally did, it was the poorly edited American dub that intercut the movie with a guy just telling us what was happening. “Why don’t you go to Hokkaido?” “Do not go to Hokkaido.” Gonna be honest. This doesn’t really make me want to watch more Godzilla movies. It was interesting because it’s different from what I normally watch, but it wasn’t really good. Our friend had some interesting trivia about the production, and I liked seeing the hair and clothing style of 60s Japan. Otherwise, it was a drag to watch. Also pretty offensive depiction of Pacific Islanders, yikes, postwar Japan. The actual monster fights were entertaining, but make up a fraction of the movie. I’ll say the highlight was the miniature work.

This was so much fun I can see why this sort of became the formula for many a Godzilla film. The non-Kaiju stuff was a mixed bag for me. I found the idea of the reason King Kong was even aware of Godzilla being because a guy wants to boost TV ratings makes a lot of sense. I wish it leaned more into that being sort of a weird thing to desire, it seems like he was mostly rewarded for…
