Steven Norrington has the distinction of being the man responsible for ending the acting career of Scotland’s finest, Sir Sean Connery. To say this film is a mess would be an understatement, but the chaos behind the scenes have become part of cinematic-folklore. The League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen was another big screen adaptation of an Alan Moore comic with a big budget and a headline grabbing star. Sean Connery’s Allan Quatermain is the adventurer of old, and along with a host of other talented individuals is recruited to stop an evil genius with a hunger for a world war. Both the plot and the script is from the bottom of a toilet as we get a vampire, an invisible man, Captain…

A raging hot mess of literary archetypes that never fails to engross me. Creative in its exploits and was our version of a superhero movie before Phase One. Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde has always been a favorite.

Really not as bad as it’s reputation would lead you to believe. Love the steampunk vibe and it’s a nicely designed film, even if the CG really falters in some places. Connery is on fine form and most of the cast around him do a decent job. Lovely looking nonsense but brisk and full of enough action to keep this viewer engaged.

My dad and his friends called themselves the League of Extremely Ordinary Gentlemen when this came out. They made hats that said L.E.O.G.

Hated this when it came out, completely taken in this time. Anyways, as an adaptation of a renowned Alan Moore creation I’m sure this falls short, but as an antidote to the then-burgeoning (and now fully entrenched) self-seriousness of, say the X-MENs, this is a brisk, self-consciously silly, and above all gorgeously designed piece of escapism. Norrington should have had a much longer career, shame they beat it out of him on this one.

Incomprehensible, uncool, ugly, and ridiculous, but never ever is it dull. At one point, 75 year old Connery jumps out of a 30 foot long convertible going about 60 mph while Venice is crumbling around him, and lands totally flat footed. That, plus about 40 other equally beautifully baffling choices, keep it just entertaining enough to not turn off. “Care for a spin?”

Not aggressively bad…but the comic is far better. I do really like the idea of warfare evolving with the turn of the 20th century but the themes get dragged down by a few too many characters. Dorian Gray and Tom Sawyer aren’t necessarily out of place but they make the roster a bit too crowded, and Mina Harker is sidelined waaaaay too hard. Definitely a product of it’s time, and I hope the IP can be resurrected as an animated series like Harley Quinn because the material is definitely there.

Not a bad movie, definitely could be better. A pro movie watcher would probably rate this lower than me. But I fairly enjoy this, especially learning about more characters. Characters like Dorian Gray, Captain Nemo, Mira Harker, Moriarty James, Jekyll/Hyde, definitely have heard them, just never get into them deeply. I learnt new characters too, like the Invisible Man, however I know Skinner is not the original Invisible Man. I learnt about Allen Quartermain and Tom Sawyer too, never heard…

Not a good comic book adaptation, it’s terrible. I don’t understand why Hollywood always find a way to screw up a source material and get a way with it, especially comic books. They took this unique idea by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neill that the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is initially envisioned as a Justice League of the Victorian era, and turned it into a dumb action flick. This film did not performe well that both Sean Connery and the…

A firm fave as a kid still whips now. Infamously tense and troubled production. The film does feel a bit quick at points as if it has had some heavy interference particularly in the second act the mole subplot is very condensed. Still it’s a great bit of swashbuckling fun all the action is really great high energy impactful fits the PG-13 family blockbuster without feeling neutered. Is very funny to take such a dark and grim comic and make…

I watched it as a kid and I had such a fond memories of this film but the movie did not live up to them. One thing I distinctly remembered is that Captain Nemo dies so you can see how much trust I can put in these memories.

This is a disastrously offensive adaptation of Alan Moore’s graphic novel. It takes the 20th century setting and literary character team up premise and simply turns it into a generic action movie. It’s a major bummer, as the novel is incredibly dense with British history and mature themes. To give you a sense of how far off this movie is, we get appearances by Sherlock Holmes, the War of the Worlds aliens, and Dr. Moreau in the novel; yet none…

Pretty good movie, I’d watch again! I thought it was a very interesting concept, and I liked that’s it’s based of a graphic novel that uses book characters!

I think if this goofy thing were released today it would not end nearly as many careers. The people would rally around it. Take.. your.. time! we’d all shout. And then we’d all head to Nemo’s ship for lunch. Because cool ship.

L
I don’t care for the over the top digital effects of machines, cities crumbling or submarines. But it’s fun to see tge characters interacting, albeit not always with the smoothest script or dialogue. Would have liked to see more character building, their history etc.

I know “The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen” doesn’t get a lot of love, but it is one of those films that has a special place in my heart, as I find myself rewatching it two or three times a year. I appreciate its entertaining blend of adventure and fantasy, with its unique premise: it imagines that literary figures from different eras are real and brought together to prevent a new war. Sean Connery delivers a memorable performance as the gruff…

What are we, some kind of League of Extraordinary Gentlemen?

Yeah, fair enough. I loved the movie as a child when it first came out. So, one might think I’m romanticizing it and ignoring its flaws. That may be true, but I also get the feeling that the general public has simply decided this movie sucks. You all just want to hate, because you love to hate it. Some might tentatively admit they think it’s actually okay, or even a guilty pleasure. I have to say, sometimes I just can’t…

so that’s it huh? we some kinda extraordinary gentlemen league? captain nemo kicks ass so hard it’s kind of unbelievable. I don’t use the word aura lightly and boy golly he’s got it. he’s without a doubt the most bitchin’ one. SO glad he gets as much screentime as he does folks, this movie is not good, but it’s really not THAT bad. it’s fun. it’s a fun time.

The first Avengers. The movie that made apparently made Alan Moore refuse to watch any more film adaptations of his comics. I think this movie is pretty good. As far as I know, this is the first instance of the Sherlock Holmes villain Prof. James Moriarty’s trying to start World War I for profit, which is an amazing concept that doesn’t even appear in the original Sherlock Holmes stories or Moore’s comic series. Who came up with it?

A refreshing tale using storybook characters instead of superheroes. But just not a good enough story, limited by the CGI of the time and the PG-13 rating. I could see this being an R rated venture from Zack Snyder in the early ‘10s. Almost in a similar style to Watchmen. This is a nostalgic trip for me to watch this movie. But does it stand the test of time? Mmm… mildly, some aspects are cool, others not so much. It’s too short, plays its hand too quickly and tells you entirely too much. 3.7 / 10

A guilty pleasure. I explained to my son that people don’t like it and his flabbers we’re gasted. He thought it was awesome and his excitement was contagious. Even though most of the CGI hasn’t aged well, the practical work is refreshing. Miniatures, rubber monsters, and camera tricks are TIMELESS. I still don’t understand how Mina can be in the sunlight though.

I love this movie, as in the concept. The idea of just a bunch of different public domain characters in one connected universe is just really interesting to me. I have watched this movie before when I was a kid but I only remember the scene where Jekyll looked into the mirror and was looking at Hyde. The visuals in this are incredibly impressive for 2003 and practical effects are also really good amd having a combo of sfx and…

The ill will toward this movie has always mystified me. What did you get out of The Avengers that this didn’t already do with better characters in a cooler setting? It seems like every single commentator latched on to Sean Connery’s reported unhappiness and decided that it must be bad. I mean, he’s allowed his opinion, but this is the man who thought Zardoz was a wise career move. He’s as human as the next man.

Sean Connery retiring after this movie is a terrible way to end a career.

Can’t really comment on how this handled the source material. But as a CGI-laden action movie from the early aughts, you could do a lot worse. Sure, it’s sloppy. Probably a little too long. And never really clicks. But I still like watching Connery in something even if he’s going half speed. I don’t think the CGI is that bad. And prior-MCU comic book/graphic novel movies are kinda fun to observe simply because there wasn’t really expectations/formulas. Mid. But better than I remember.

Not nearly gay enough or campy enough. This movie made Sean Connery quit making movies.

Man I don’t really know what to say about this movie. Like it was hilarious and super fun to watch in a group but I feel my enjoyment would end if I didn’t watch it in one. It was super cool tho and based on the graphic novel by Alan Moore so that’s neat.

european literary avengers fighting against darth vader and his evil clone army actually a nice concept of reviving literary characters of the 19th century but ends in immortal dorian gray battling a vampire and mr. jekyll’s monstrous alter ego mr. hulk (suddenly turned nice) fighting a mega-hulk and an invisible naked man groping said vampire, while tom sawyer works as a secret agent; too much bombs and stupid mega submarines, nothing happens apart from too many stupid fights, neither charming nor funny, just very boring

I wish this was good and not just fun The concept in this movie is so good. Taking some of the most recognizable characters from Victorian literature and creating a superhero like team is so cool. That’s impossible to dislike and it can work very well as a foundation alone. There is honestly enough material here for a whole franchise. I’m not the most well-versed when it comes to these characters but even with base level knowledge the possibility for…

A light-hearted attempt of a victorian Justice League of sorts. Shame that this is the film Connery went out on, as he’s not bad but clearly is in ngaf mode throughout the whole thing. Still, ngaf Connery leaves you with something unlike some.

Just read the comics. Well, mainly the first two volumes; it just became The Boys for classic literature after The Black Dossier. That said, I still prefer Rodney Skinner (the film Invisible Man because of copyright issues) over Hawley Griffin (a massive traitorous scumbug).
