83 Pretty telling that I didn’t fully give myself over to Kubo and the Two Strings back when I was burying the ideas of memory, legend, family, and community in favor of independence and young adulthood. My mother gave me a big hug at the end of this film when we first saw it together. I thought I didn’t understand why at the time, but the truth is that I did, and I was scared – of leaving, of creating my own story, of confronting the conclusions of some and weaving the beginnings of others, and mostly, frightened of what the implications of that hug might mean. I’ve come to terms with it now, and I’m never letting go. That is, until the end of the story. It’ll be alright then.

Staggeringly beautiful and immensely true, the best animated film of 2016 — one of the year’s best films of any kind, really — is a stop-motion fable about a one-eyed boy in mythical Japan that was made by a team of gifted visionaries in an Oregon warehouse. Laika, the independent studio behind morbid enchantments like “Coraline” and “ParaNorman,” has already established itself as a formidable bulwark against the ever-accelerating onslaught of computer-generated 3D cartoons, but “Kubo and the Two Strings” makes even the most painstaking of their previous movies feel like a trial run. Ok, Disney-, Pixar-, Dreamworks-people listen up. The next time you’re in the process of creating your next animated feature, have this running 24/7 to make sure you’ll be creative, different, passionate, dedicated, not inclined to take the easy way out and above all in awe of the craftsmanship involved in making what is one of the best animated films ever made. Dare to be different. Dare to be Kubo.

Some of the most beautiful animation I’ve ever seen. The imagination and creativity behind this movie is absolutely mind-blowing. Monkey and Beetle are forever my spirit animals. Step aside Pixar, Laika is taking over.

Eyes can be manipulated, memories can be forgotten, family can betray us… but the human condition always prevails.

my favourite thing about this film has to be the fact that your fate could literally be determined by how epic your guitar solo is

It’s not great, it’s not terrible. Some absolutely stunning animation anchors an aggressively predictable and mediocre story with a really annoying side character. It’s fine but I really don’t anticipate checking it out again

I love it when a movie just makes ya ask “how’d they do that?” The Beatles cover for the credits is very jarring.

Visually stunning film about love, loss, and the importance of finding family worth remembering. On rewatch I deeply appreciate that the main character is disabled as well, and showing that he can be strong and overcome challenges regardless of his circumstances. Can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I watched this, definitely a worthwhile film that I hope will be remembered for years to come. I will say, this movie could have benefitted from more time spent with its portrayal…

A powerful piece of filmmaking about love and growing up that rises to the a level of handmade artistry rarely seen.

Le animazioni sono stupende ma ho trovato la storia un po’ banale e i dialoghi molto infantili. Mi rendo conto che è un film per bambini ma non credo che lo rivedrò volentieri.

This has been a childhood favourite of mine for a long time I think it conveys a special message about how parents are presented and how we must not loose the worth we have for our self even when loosing others we love

Got this for my Birthday and got to finally watch it! I’ve always considered this my favorite Laika Film- and it still is. Visually it’s so impressive and the story is really sweet- hits the coming of age, hero’s journey, fantastical elements is enjoy and Kubo is a Bard! Some might call it cliche but it’s tender to me. I’m really into the voice performances of Charlize Theron and Matthew McConaughey. Points for the great cover of My Guitar Gently Weeps.

story and characters are very amazing as well as the environment it plays out on, but you can tell this is a very Western perspective of asian culture…its such a nitpick but i just wish this was collaborated with more dedication to asian culture and history cause i think it would’ve drive home the beauty of japan’s history. i think it’s really beautiful but i don’t think this movie is for me (to rewatch again).

I picked this up a couple of weeks ago (my son was with me and “knew” that it was good). The animation is fantastic and really enhanced the story – which finds a really nice sweet spot in between driving the plot forward, adding some humour, and allowing you to connect with the characters emotions. The voice cast are all very good, though I have to say that Charlize Theron impressed me the most.

Love Laika and what they do in stop motion. Like there other movies it pushes the boundaries and maturity of what stop motion and kids movies can be. Kubo is nothing short of that, creating a unique story of a boy pressured to abandon what he’s known and the steps he takes to stand up to that.

I look at the world and I notice it’s turning While my guitar gently weeps With every mistake, we must surely be learning Still, my guitar gently weeps The people we love never truly leave us.. they live on in the stories we carry and the memories we choose to keep as we move forward… I can’t believe I held off on this so long, such a stunningly animated film. I think this could be one of the most breathtaking stop-motions I’ve seen thus far, every movement and detail felt so tangible.. fluid and immersive…. handcrafted and yet so alive… thanks for the rec Sophie!! 😛

Visually one of the greatest movies of all time that is put in a frustratingly casual adventure. Lot of walking around and fairly slow action. It’s like I’m given a Wendy’s burger with the best fries to ever exist. Like yeah I wanna give the meal a perfect score but the fries don’t change the burger. Also the characters aren’t amazing but god I WANNA LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH. But I can only think it’s pretty good Oh my god I was a day off watching this on its 10 year anniversary first insane chances second 10 years god take me now

The worst voice acting and annoying foley work in any animated movie I have ever heard. Takes away from all the great stuff that might’ve been there that I certainly couldn’t focus on. Humor is very dry, poorly written, and delivered terribly. All the main characters are voiced by white people… Obviously a kids movie, but the story and plot are soooo boring and predictable. Woof.

Laika really outdid themselves here, with the stop-motion animation looking absolutely gorgeous from beginning to end. The Japanese-inspired setting gives the film such a distinct visual identity, while the mix of magic, mythology, monsters, and heartfelt family drama makes this feel much bigger and more ambitious than your typical animated movie. I especially love how it can be genuinely exciting and even a little creepy at times, but still has this warm emotional core underneath everything. Kubo himself is an…

this plot in 2026 is a hard watch but after seeing all the work done in the special features section of the DVD, my initial thoughts on the movie still stand. so much detail that is/would be elusive to the general viewer.
