Castle in the Sky has one of the best scores in an animated film. I remember when I was little, after the first couple of times I watched this film, I would always look up at a big billowing cloud and wonder if Laputa was really in there. Sometimes I would play the music in my head to give myself the full effect while cloud gazing. *spoilers* I want to take some time to talk about the ending of this film. Bittersweet and powerful. It’s interesting that all the spells that have constructive effects are extremely difficult to both remember and pronounce. But the one that puts everything to ruin, is just one simple command. I find that to be…

When I was 19, I was shipped off to serve a two-year mission for my church and one of the rules was that we weren’t permitted worldly distractions, particularly movies. One evening, my companion and I were over at a Japanese family’s house and they threw Castle in the Sky on for their kids while we chatted about boring churchy stuff at the dining room table. What started as a few stolen glances quickly became a full-on apostasy as I just could not take my eyes off the screen. I spent the next two hours drawing out our discussion so I could sneak-watch the entire movie and by the end of it was filled with more euphoric joy than any holy spirit had ever brought me. I remember thinking: if this is the reason I end up in hell, it was totally worth it.

Way too wholesome and sweet to a degree where it’s almost unbearable, my heart oh god my fucking heart [starts banging on table] kind robots! robots that look scary on the outside but are in fact programmed to be extremely gentle, robots that care about animals, robots that play with fox squirrels in their free time aaaaaa look! the robot gives flowers, the robot tends to the grave of its master. I am going to cry now.

The fact that no one is scared of heights in Ghibli films is beyond me. Pazu really just be hanging on the side of a castle thousands of feet in the air like it’s a walk in the park.

This is my favorite movie of all time so expect a little bit of rose tinted glaze. To start, the music in Castle in the Sky is absolutely incredible, and it’s in my regular music rotation for a reason. I love its unique instrument choice that perfectly fits the mood when you finally see Laputa. Along with music, the actual animation is stunningly beautiful. Every shot in this movie is good, and the best shots are even better. The incredible…

pazu and sheeta be having the most at the ripe age of 11 bro. This poor damn kids being wrecked mentally and physically by this damn grown adult especially the one with glasses (who turn out to be sheeta uncle/cousin) i wish there were more lore about laputa itself, like how were they made and why does something with the greatest technology fall down like that? and did laputa is a mix between magic or just pure technology?

Wauw 🤩 Cutee:33 Hypnotizing animation in how they convey each run, tumble and fall. It truly livened each action packed scene and made Pazu come off as that much more agile. Damn.. It’s definitely the most child friendly Ghibli movie I’ve watched next to My Neighbour Totoro. The first half was surprisingly cartoony to the point of each punch and hit needing its own connected “POW!” or “BANG!” animated exclamation bubble. It was truly wonderfully childishly whimsical. Like how the…

Birthday Watch! This is the 3rd time I’ve watched this movie! I didn’t even think I liked Castle in the Sky that much. On my Ghibli ranking, I ranked it decently low and considered it my least favourite Hayao Miyazaki film. So why? Why have I seen it 3x more than my favourite Miyazaki films. Well, even after the first viewing there were always aspects of this film I deeply appreciated. The score has always really stood out to me.…

Two back-to-back bangers, and it’s Ghibli’s FIRST bangers. And let me just say, the banger train ain’t stopping anytime soon. And on this stop, we have some people’s favorite Ghibli film. While it’s not my personal favorite, it is in my Top 10 (so far). I think my favorite thing about this film are the visuals (which is a no brainer for a Ghibli film), especially the painted backdrops. They look great in Nausicaä (hell, they look great in any…

Just beautiful. Ghibli’s first real film, and its creativity exceeds that of most studio’s entire filmography. The potency of this film’s images is something really special; practically every scene, some new brilliant environment or device will appear that in any other film could and would carry the entire movie in terms of the visual interest it can deliver, but here it’s all packed so densely together, presented in such rapid-fire fashion in the midst of these beautifully orchestrated fairy-tale narrative…

Such a great movie I absolute love the mechanical fantasy subgenre, something about seeing gears and how everything works feels so mesmerizing The very plain messaging and metaphors don’t feel dumbed down but also strikes a balance of not requiring 30 minutes of reflection If I grew up with this movie I think I would have been a better person This is the poster child of studio ghibli and it’s deserved It reminded me of Atlantis at times both the…
