Okay, I do NOT like the way things look when they are outside or surrounded by a lot of people. All those scenes look somewhere between a nauseatingly-saturated mid-2000s boy band music video and a Robert Rodriguez-directed episode of Angela Anaconda. This would have hit like crack if I was like nine years old. There’s so much on the screen at points that it becomes overwhelming as you slip in the an epileptic seizure. If you took a shot every time a character’s face was used as a wipe to transition to the next shot you’d die a before the first act ended. Paulie Litt is Jar Jar Binx level annoying. Definitely feels like a metaphor for the Wachowski’s trying to maintain their voice within the studio system, and a message to children to keep their dreams alive.

The entire time I was watching this I was reminded so strongly of Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over, and I mean that as the grandest compliment. This movie is as exciting as it is silly, and at times it can be pretty absurd. The colors are so beautifully saturated and the racing is so chaotic and insane that while I was watching I couldn’t imagine wasting even a second by looking away.

This shreds, so fucking fun and entertaining. Balls to the wall special effects, oversaturated CGI, people talking like jojo characters, plot twists that make no fucking sense, and a pet monkey. I knew I was gonna like this but it went above and beyond my expectations. This is how you correctly adapt early anime for live action. I’ve been a Wachowski fan for a long time but this really cements them as GOATS (Greatest Of All Transgenders). Gonna come back to this. there’s so much to love and fixate on, I can’t believe this bombed when it came out what were audiences thinking.

I can appreciate the complete confidence to just say fuck it and fully commit to a completely outlandish visual style. That is what I enjoy most about this. It looks pretty amazing. I just wish I liked the other parts of the film. The writing in particular left me wanting so much more. I love John Goodman but his performance here is so weird that I have to think it’s the script. The comedy isn’t for me either. I don’t think adding a Beansesque kid improves any story.

Omg I loved this movie so much. It’s stylistically so fun and interesting, every actor is giving it their all, especially the lead, it’s very well written, oh and also much of the CGI is genuinely atrocious. Speed and Trixie have great chemistry and I liked that the main romantic relationship was already established and not a main part of the plot. My dad is a huge Speed Racer fan who watched the original run of the anime when he was growing up and he showed it to me when I was a kid.
