What we get isn’t a story with characters we want to root for and events that we can feel dramatically involved with. We get a film that’ just fact after fact with a golden coating over it and I’m not just talking about the disgusting color-scheme that haunts this film. There are far more jingoistic British and American historical films so I won’t begrudge The Netherlands for having one of their own. I went into it expecting a competently made hagiography and that’s exactly what I got. It’s very funny to me to see Charles II portrayed as a hard nosed Tywin Lannister, when he may have been one of our fruitiest monarchs. Bonus points for showing the murder of the De Witt brothers, but minus points for pro colonial montage at the start.

Hele interessante film. Ik vind de moord op de gebroeders de Witt echt bizar hoe gruwelijk die is. Daarnaast wil ik zeggen dat Michiel de Ruyter serieus goated is. Vo voor de Ruyter. En ik ben ook erg te spreken over de VOC mentaliteit van vroeger (op de slavernij en moorden na).

Best leuk eigenlijk zo’n heroïsche film in het Nederlands. Volgt het verhaal van admiraal Michiel de Ruyter. Zeeslagen best aardig in beeld gebracht, verder vooral de focus op de politieke ontwikkelingen vanaf 1650 in Nederland. Frank Lammers en Sanne Langeraar spelen goed. Overgedramatiseerde filmische scènes maakt het soms wat lang. Begrijp trouwens niet waarom de Engelse koning hier voorop de filmposter staat.

In terms of the technicality, the film does a decent job, we do have incredible naval battles. The set design and costumes are quite charming, on the other hand as far as depth of characters and plot goes, I really wish this film would elaborate a little bit more. The treatment of De Witt is decent, but it doesn’t really capture him in a profound sense. The only true solid relationship we see is between De Ruyter and his wife (both actors did great here) but as far as the other characters go, the whole thing feels sort of flimsy and two-dimensional.

He made a promising debut in 1999 with his Dutch action road movie The Delivery, then worked extensively in the DtDVD field, reliably delivering grandiose-looking B movies. Admiral and the historical story of Dutch hero Michiel de Ruyter brought him back to producing cinema in Europe. With big sea battles, lots of extras, and a plethora of characters. Too many. It’s almost comical how this movie tries to portray the Dutch (VOC) and De Ruyter as heroes. It mirrors the way the so called “Golden Ages” in The Netherlands are often looked back on with a sense of pride. That, while fully glazing over the fact that all that wealth and power was created by slave-trade, colonialism, conquests, killing and the creation of the capitalist system (with stocks) as we know it today. I think this movie is more of a fantasy that is supposed to make the Dutch feel good about something we shouldn’t feel good about (aka propaganda) than anything else.
