Gonna come right out and say it. It was better than Spirited Away. While Spirited Away is definitely more epic and has a lot more ideas to it, Totoro has a lot more heart and personality. For the first time in a long time I can genuinely say I feel like a kid again and I can’t thank this film enough for giving me that feeling. There were many times as a kid, and even now, where I just wanted someTHING, anything, to help me in a lonely or difficult situation. Totoro representing that thing was perfect and everything I needed. I feel so not alone and so comforted right now. I love you Miyazaki.

No plot. No central character. No antagonist. No defined purpose for side characters. No threat. No three acts. No jokes. No punchlines. No explanations. No internal references. No catchphrases. No political polemical voice. No melodrama. No lessons. No beginning. No end. One of the best films ever made.

Easily the most wholesome movie I’ve rated on Letterboxd, so insanely cute. Where Howls Moving Castle struggles too much with its mess of a plot, this one excels without one. I could’ve watched like another hour of Satsuki and Mei hanging out with Totoro. The movie felt perfect, I think it being older makes it so much warmer / comfier. (Maybe the score will go down in time because I literally just finished it but if future James does that,…

It is quite possible to be deeply loved beyond belief, and yet confronted with the weight of unbearable grief. This is where we find the characters in My Neighbor Totoro, and for the following hour and a half, we watch them experience the paradoxes of life. It’s impossible to put words to what you experience while watching this film. “Baptism” might be a stretch, but it’s the best I can find. You don’t need to go into it looking too…

-
C
A film that could just as easily been a new release. Cozy, warm, and pure comfort from the first rain drop to the last soot sprite. It’s got no villain, no big twist, just two sisters figuring out a new house, new environment, and the forest being magic when you need it most. Instant serotonin. The kind of movie that makes you want to leave snacks out for the forest spirits.

Pre Review Note: Watched in English dub audio In a world of complex stories and visuals this was such a refreshing and simple film. I loved it, it was so wholesome! The whole story of displaying a kid’s ability to see things that adults might not be able to see was really cute and kinda brought me back to my own childhood I guess Didn’t have the same emotional effects I recall spirited away had but this was such an…
