Did you know: After Will Smith joined the project the studio faced a “massive” casting conundrum. Casting an African American female lead would make the film a “Black Movie”, potentially alienating white audiences. While casting a white female lead would make the core romance of the film an interracial relationship, which could also alienate the backwards minds of 2005. To remedy this the studio cast Eva Mendes, a Latina actress, in an effort to offend the smallest group possible. So for some very wrong reasons we got a mainstream Rom Com with two POC leads! Progress? Representation? Yay?

Honestly shocked at how much this movie holds up! I liked it! It’s genuinely charming! And funny! Hitch is good! However, I have one big big problem with it: Hitch was released in the United States February 11th, 2005. Four days later, on February 15th, 2005, the film’s lead Will Smith released the first single from his album Lost and Found, which was titled– “Switch.” Song’s a banger, lyrics are questionable, it’s used to great effect to make us all fall in love with Paul Rudd in I Could Never Be Your Woman. Now with the release dates so close, the similarity in titles, and Smith’s history of song/film synergy, you’d THINK the song would make an appearance. Maybe even…

Hitch is actually bisexual, however his attraction to men is heavily closeted, causing him to invest considerable time and resources into fulfilling his fetish of being directly responsible for women having the sex he wishes he could have with these guys. It makes sense when you think about it — him practicing the kisses with these guys, him dancing with the guys, and of course the Greco-Roman style of homoerotic wrestling that pops up a couple times. Interesting queer narrative that is a testament to the distorting power of the closet and the complicated narratives bi men face.

Nothing like a 00s rom-com, I miss them. Knowing that Albert Brennaman is going to be the best character in this very quickly after he uses a can of coke to try and get rid of a stain and Eva Mendes using a can of whipped cream as a source of comfort food…yass girl. « Hitch, expert en séduction » est un film médiocre. Loin d’être dessus au contraire, le film mêle séduction et humour à un tempo très rythmé dans le film, tout en prenant compte de l’importance des moments clés dû films. La trame du film est peu attrayante mais reste correcte. Will smith et Kevin James forment un bon duo dans ce film. Le seul problème du film, qui a mon sens le rend fade, est l’existence d’une relation pour le protagoniste, qui selon moi est toxique puisque elle n’a pas lieu d’être. L’idée n’est pas mauvaise mais elle est mal exploitée. C’est dommage !

Breezy, decent feel-good rom-com. I enjoyed it much more the first time I watched this. But now rewatching this, the chemistry between Will Smith’s Hitch and Eva Mendes’ Sara doesn’t hold up (I wasn’t convinced enough their characters had fallen in love with each other at the end.) Kevin James has such humorous chemistry scenes shared with Smith.

my clients actually like women it’s hard to overstate what a phenomenon this movie was when it debuted. i worked at the movie theater, and EVERYONE was seeing it. it’s a perfect date movie for any age, and it’s Will Smith cashing in his full star power to get butts in seats. it’s not Will Smith the action star, or Will Smith the fresh prince comedian, it’s just pure undiluted Will Smith charisma and charm. it’s a laugh-out-loud endearing rom-com that is executed almost perfectly. can’t beat it!

Basic Principles: There are none. Man, Kevin James and Will Smith were probably goats on set. Would’ve been cool to see them as closer friends in the context of the plot, and maybe it was written that way originally and changed over time. The “be yourself” theme was a sound parable and a good reminder as men weigh the perspectives of the red pill movement in today’s society. Albert was most definitely the X-Factor in this one and overall, definitely is a good movie to throw on with your lady after she apologizes for throwing the cyclospora-ridden Taylor Farms salad kit all over the kitchen.

Definitely one of the better early 2000s rom-coms. Its fun and simple. The chemistry between Will Smith & Kevin James is great. Both of them work off of each other really well. The biggest takeaway of the movie is that there is no formula to dating. The basic principle is there are no principles. All you can do is have confidence and be yourself. Pretty simple and straightforward.
