Synopsis

The Texas Rangers chase down a gang of outlaws led by Butch Cavendish, but the gang ambushes the Rangers, seemingly killing them all. One survivor is found, however, by an American Indian named Tonto, who nurses him back to health. The Ranger, donning a mask and riding a white stallion named Silver, teams up with Tonto to bring the unscrupulous gang and others of that ilk to justice.

A 21st-century blockbuster western, made from all the parts of previous westerns while being distinctly its own thing, made possible due to its casually PG-13 deconstruction of problematic genre tropes and narratives by being viewed through the memories of a Comanche Indian as he beseeches future generations to remember our country’s inherently bloody colonialist roots, how companies will inevitably end up corrupt through the greed of man and how that corruption will cajole the government to support their designs while also proselytizing to the people they profit off of – the white, middle- and lower-class people as people of color are treated as resources due to literal codification of exploitative racism – reminding us all that in the end there’s…

One of the more unfairly maligned American films of the 21st century, and among the small handful of genuine anomalies within Disney’s 2010s lineup that mostly consisted of assembly line filmmaking. Lovingly crafted with so much passion from everyone involved, wholly succeeding both as a throwback to classical westerns and also being a condemnation of capitalism/a deconstruction of Old West myths. Fantastically directed, carefully written, and terrifically performed, with Armie Hammer in particular delivering what remains by and far the best performance of his career. I know I have many unpopular opinions, so call me a vulgar auteurist if you must, but whereas I can sort of understand why something like Ang Lee’s HULK wouldn’t be everyone’s cup of tea, I cannot fathom watching this (especially the third act) and not being filled with joy, let alone hating it.

Major “I was wrong” vibes on this one. I do still think the Depp casting clashes horribly with the film’s otherwise refreshing insistence on foregrounding the erasure of natives from both the real and mythologized West, yet another instance of Verbinski using a Disney blockbuster to both highlight the marginalization of undesirables throughout history while contributing to it. But this is still pure Verbinski: opulent and iconic even as it tears down iconography, possessed of a genuine sense of comic timing that is so frequently lost in movies of this scale (or reduced to Whedonesque bon mots). Its action is fluid and, in the end, overwhelming, all while feeding directly into its themes. Why this put an end to the…

Whoa… I avoided this for years thinking it would be terrible—I was wrong! Plenty to like here… great set pieces (that finale is a banger), Buster Keaton train stuff, morricine twang, and great character actors playing characters. Wish I saw this theatrically!

Looks like we’re not reviewing this one on SVU after all, much to my chagrin, so some thoughts. -There are some things about this movie that flat-out do not work (Helena Bonham Carter, WTFIU?). On the other hand, there is some stuff that is absolutely terrific (like the editing and cinematography in the big train finale). -Yes, this is sometimes a shockingly dark blockbuster. (A bad guy eating a the hero’s brother’s heart in a Disney movie? Way to exploit your contractual right to final cut, Jerry Bruckheimer!) The framing story, though, is all about Tonto (Johnny Depp) trying and frequently failing to communicate to this little boy who wants to hear about the great legend of The Lone Ranger.…

Okay….by far and away one of the best films to come out of Hollywood in recent years. I was prepared for the capitalist/manifest destiny critique going in – but still so surprised at how deftly and full of feeling it was handled – resembles Gomes’ Tabu almost in how everything in the “background” is really in the foreground (referring here to its Native American characters)…structurally I thought it was so brilliant – the framing story is one of the best I’ve seen in any movie! How it returns to the literal frame itself that Tonto is standing in, him positioned behind a rock, turned away from the camera, so on – mimicking the position he is in in the main…

THE NOBLE SAVAGE “Have you no decency?” Sergio Leone and Buster Keaton in the trappings of a modern glossy PG blockbuster. Gore takes the digital formal trickery he experimented with in the Pirates sequels and applies them here to huge and beautiful old-school revisionist Western iconography that doubles as a surprisingly vicious indictment of gentlemanly, respectable civilized liberalism—directly tying our DA justice-seeking hero who quotes John Locke and despises killing to the machinery of the violent, capitalist project. The good guys able to sleep at night due to their socially conscious treaties (“are you capable of that?”), meanwhile they actively participate and work with those crafting a brutal world that can only run on the blood of the poor and…

The train sequences are two top tier train times. Most of the parts between those is kinda nothing, except when it’s great. Like when Silver the horse appears standing on a branch in a tree at night, wearing the Ranger’s cowboy hat and maybe holding a bunch of flowers in his mouth?

Haven’t seen this since it came out, loved the tv show as a kid. Very fun film. Also a lot funnier than I remembered. The ending train sequence is golden, and honestly makes the film. It reminds me so much of watching the show as a little kid, not sure if it’s just the music or what. It made me give the movie a higher ranking as well. I think it’s a very enjoyable movie.

  47. T

Yes, the framing device with Old Man Tonto is unnecessary, and yes, Armie Hammer and all that, but damned if I don’t enjoy this movie. It’s like a Wild West stunt show in a theme park, only better. Because in addition to gonzo stunts and crazy pyro, we get genuinely great performances from the two leads and one helluva climax. Btw, it’s conspicuously missing from Disney+. I have no doubt why. Thankfully, I own the Blu-ray. Another win for physical media!

VANCOUVER PLANE MOVIE #1: A movie starring two (2) rapists. It’s boring, about an hour too long, and terribly miscast. Watching it made me realise just how shit of an actor Armie Hammer is. Johnny Depp also fucking sucked here. The movie also lacked any kind of narrative thrust, and maintained that worn out “we’re embarrassed of the source material” shtick throughout. Fuck this movie

If you view The Green Hornet (2011) as the same continuity as The Lone Ranger (2013), that film is a poignant showcase of how Latham Cole’s legacy of American expansionism through capitalist business and commerce successfully passed down and domesticated through Danny Reid, James Reid, and Britt Reid. James Reid is even played by Tom Wilkinson, the same actor as Latham Cole. However, Cole corrupted information and institutions to accumulate power while James already possessed institutional power and eventually decides…

Enième remake du Justicier solitaire, un Johnny Depp qui joue un peu trop comme dans les autres films où il fait des personnages vraiment space, un Texas ranger plutôt plat dans des décors fabuleux. HOLY. FUCK. The awful Depp casting and lacking focus on true Indigenous struggle have to be acknowledged, the opportunity to really highlight historical and persisting issues was heavily sidestepped by framing Depp as a comedic relief character. Looking beyond that…the sets, composition, storyline and comedic timing are MAGNIFICENT. That entire train scene? Masterpiece, one of the best action scenes I’ve ever seen!! Socialist message? Wonderful, eat the rich!! Armie Hammer? Still a suspected cannibal.

Genuinely has to be one of my favourite movies of all time, it’s so fun and has a perfect mix of whimsical cowboy mishaps with the serious tones of the wild west. I love it and have loved it since I was little.

The last western block buster. I haven’t seen this since it came out when my dad and I went to a matinee on our own and then waffle house afterwards. I was a massive Pirates of the Caribbean fan as a kid and he knew this was in the same vein and yet, neither of us were as wowed by it as the trilogy Gore blessed our household with for years. Suffice it to say I am now a big…

As is the case with all Gore Verbinski films it is visually stunning. It has some really cool action set pieces. It’s maybe a little too long, and I’m not sure how I feel about Johnny Depp playing a Native American. It’s not that Johnny Depp is bad, he’s very entertaining, it’s just a little weird having a white guy playing a Native American. It’s like they unironically did the thing 𝘛𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘤 𝘛𝘩𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘦𝘳 was making fun of with the Robert Downey Jr. character. Having said that, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘙𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦𝘳 is an entertaining popcorn movie that’s a lot better than its reputation.

One of my new favs. The story of early colonization is one that hasn’t been strayed away from being told in new modern stories. How the indigenous people were lied to, conned, and slaughtered on their own land. It’s a story of family, bravery, loyalty, and doing what is RIGHT rather than what is expected. I loved the slight historically accurate details of you know enough to catch them, and as a horse girl at heart I saw many parallels to the movie ‘Spirit: Stallion of the Cimarron” that made my heart happy. 10/10 thanks babe for finally convincing me to watch

Really want to rewatch The General now. Any critique you could lay against the Pirates films will apply to this tenfold and it does feel a little bloated—in part because it wants to riff on seemingly every Western ever made—but damn it if the set pieces in this aren’t batshit crazy and dare I say, pure cinema. The casting doesn’t help. Depp as Tonto was a choice, even then and Hammer, well, they couldn’t have known. Probably would’ve dialed down the cannibalism if they did.

The huge set piece at the end with the train and William Tell is excellent, but boy was this a misguided mess from its conception. They tried to make a Western Pirates of the Caribbean with Tonto as Jack Sparrow and that was a terrible idea. 1 star for the climax. 1 star for how great the Lone Ranger looks in that costume and on that horse. 1/2 star for William Fichtner as a pretty good villain.

Gore Verbinski’s The Lone Ranger is a criminally underrated, high-octane spectacle. It’s an absolute blast that honors classic cinema—borrowing the slapstick rhythm of Buster Keaton, the epic scale of John Ford, and the train mayhem of The General—while forging its own identity. Distinct from both traditional westerns and modern revisionist entries, it delivers impeccably shot, inventive action with pure kinetic energy.

Possibly the worst aged dual leads? No way near deserving as one of the biggest bombs in history and reason Verbinski only got out of director jail last year. Needed a good trim in the edit but the two terrific action set pieces that get the blood flowing. Now we get slop like Masters of the Universe, that are made for comparable budgets, barely move the needle and have a fraction of the visual spectacle on show here. Nobody cares though because it’s all a tax write off for Bezos and Co.

Putting the cast and their issues aside, it is a pretty good epic scale western and I think that is what you will always get with Gore Verbinski: grandiose scale and an epic adventure. The cast though, thwy probably shouldn’t have made it Depp that was Tonto, for obvious reasons, but he does have some amazing physical performance. Armie Hammer was good in this, sucks that in real life he is not.

It wasn’t all that bad. Good to see Ruth Wilson in a major film. Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson and Barry Pepper had roles as well. They must have struggled to get the horse riders and stunt men nowadays. Not a lot of call for horsemen in Hollywood in this day and age. Great makeup on the old Tonto.

Armie Hammer and Johnny Depp make for an appealing pair of leads, but they’re not enough to make up for The Lone Ranger’s bland script, bloated length, and blaring action overkill.
