God, I love this movie and I don’t care who knows it. What turned out to be Jackson’s last gasp as a filmmaker of true vision and excitement, which is all the more impressive considering he takes a limited and already-remade concept and strips it of its underlying racial metaphor to simply delight in the thing itself. But this just bursts with energy, from a well-defined human cast with across-the-board strong performances (even an arguably miscast Jack Black acquits himself well by turning his naturally buoyant energy into something curdled and mean) to its amazing creature designs. To this day I’m wigged out by the bug scene, with its glacial, almost oneiric scoring and the slow pace of the beasts…

There are moments where King Kong feels larger than life— the intimate moments between Kong and Ann or the bug pit— really showcase Jackson flexing his cinematic muscles. So it’s all the more frustrating to see it fumble through unnecessary detours and become distracted by its own scale. In so many ways, it’s a cinematic miracle exists, but I suppose it’s not too strange they gave the guy who did LOTR a blank check to do whatever he wanted, which ultimately feels like a blessing and curse.

Perfect merging of Jackson’s love of 30s adventure romances & monster movies, the technological advances of Spielberg and Cameron, and the nasty genre movie playfulness he got growing up on Romero and Raimi. Has to be one the most beautiful, sentimental, and old-fashioned blockbusters (me every time there’s a close-up on the big monke’s eyes 🥺) that also happens to feature this many crushed skulls, decapitations, and a man getting viscously eaten alive by a giant worm. Still kinda crazy to me that the man who made Bad Taste and Braindead was ever trusted with this much money.

Watched Peter Jackson’s King Kong for the first time in forever. It rules so hard. This movie is extremely underappreciated and doesn’t get talked about as often as it should. An unapologetically melodramatic, romantic, indulgent, and a grand old fashioned adventure story realized with genuine artistic flair. Epic in every sense of the word, with a truly colossal scale to match. Every penny of it’s crazy budget is shown on screen through stunning visual effects & cinematography. There are so many scenes where Jackson’s horror roots are on full display, stylistically and technically. Also, that T-Rex & Kong fight sequence goes so hard, one of the best action sequences I’ve ever seen. A lot of people hate-circlejerk over its runtime, but it has excellent world building and characters with actual motivations and development. They don’t make ’em like this no more.

70 Peter Jackson’s Snyder Cut. Nothing is left on the cutting room floor. You’d think that the 3 hour and 20 minute extended edition would add further characterization and dramatic beats but it’s mostly additional scrimmages with Skull Island creatures, as if it didn’t already have enough! Love how nasty this is. Truly a blank check epic. The scope of it is overwhelming but it doesn’t hold back. More than half of the movie is PJ and Weta Workshop going crazy with brutal dinosaur encounters and disgusting insects. That final third is brutal and emotionally devastating. Can’t say it doesn’t have tell-tale signs of where Peter Jackson’s filmography was heading, but there’s plenty of his early horror/adventure spirit in this movie, and that’s enough for me. All this and more on the podcast! 🦍 🦖 🛩

“The eighth wonder of the world” This film was one that I used to watch on repeat at my nanas house and for some reason it never scared me I loved the scenes with Kong fighting the dinosaurs and all the other creatures of skull island I loved it that much that I even played the tie in game remember those. But now watching it as an adult I see so much more that the film had to offer First…

The hype must’ve been crazy at the time this came out, Peter Jackson fresh off LOTR trilogy adapting an iconic story. Weirdly most of this is actually pretty sub par. The first hour is so unnecessarily long and padded out. Middle section of the film feels like a pre-cursor to The Hobbit trilogy. A lot of wacky, very heavy CGI action scenes that don’t really resonate any emotional response. That scene in the pit with all the creatures getting them…

Already a fantastic remake that does its own thing while still being in the spirit of the classic film, but if that wasn’t enough, the final 20 minutes are some of the greatest filmmaking you will ever see, period, from the set design to the remarkable visual story telling, it’s peak.

Rewatched the 2005 Kong Remake by Peter Jackson (extended cut). All I can say is that this is a perfect loving tribute to Kong’s entire history at that point and the peak of Beauty & Beast. Never has Ann Darrow ever been well developed like this. What more can I say about this film that hasn’t been said already, there’s a reason why the MV ditched Beauty & Beast for their Kong

Tested out the HD-DVD player we found at Goodwill. Picture quality was amazing. It felt like I was in an alternate reality booting up a DVD player from 2007, almost like I went back in time Peter Jackson’s King Kong is so fucking cool. They don’t make shit like this anymore, not even the good looking movies of 2026 look half as good as this one does

Top películas tristes de la historia. Amo esta versión de Peter Jackson, fiel a las vibras del cine de los 30’s y con secuencias memorables ya icónicas del cine Hollywoodense. Creo nunca he odiado más a la raza humana como en esta película.

Fun to watch for the first time, but the run time did make the film drag for me as I felt the first and 3rd acts could have been trimmed to result in a much quicker and faster pacing as the middle of the film was where this was great. The usage of a movie being made to help add to this world with characters who were likeable and some that I found annoying in a good way. Overall, I give this film a 6/10 or 3/5 stars

This is like textbook the kindof film they rightfully talk about in video essays about racism, holyyyyyy. Think it’s ok to have very racist depictions of indigenous folks as long as there is a black crewman (who dies half way through the movie of course). And then they proceed to show even more racist depictions of indigenous folks near the end, critiquing racist 30s American culture, as if Mr. Jackson didn’t just do the same exact thing 2 hour ago.…

rewatching this after so longgg. i remember the cinema being packed and a little humid from all the people, me and fam were in the front seats only 4-5 rows from the screen. everyone was so responsive like the whole theater reacting together. and i was just a kid, so blown away by how massive the screen felt and how loud the sound was. i’d go back and experience that night all over again in a heartbeat 💛

King Kong is action-packed, visually impressive and well-performed enough to (mostly) overlook a stupidly bloated and criminally over-indulgent runtime where virtually every single scene overstays its welcome.

I haven’t seen this in a hot minute and mostly I just remember this being reaaaally long, and yeah it is. There’s no denying that there’s a lot of excess here, it takes like an hour to get to the island, there are a lot of scenes that repeat established ideas, and the scenes can move a little slow. Regardless, this still kinda slaps actually and I was sucked in. There’s a grand, theatrical quality here and a consistently effective…

Extended Edition Where AVATAR fails me with motion capture/story KING KONG succeeds. Better post MULHOLLAND DRIVE, interesting coming off THE ODYSSEY in how both share their road with perils, except in this story we capture the giant creature & bring it home. I like how visual/no dialogue so much of the action is, especially with Kong (Andy Serkis). I think what I admire most is the overall courage in the screenplay. You know it’s definitely aged a bit poorly due to all the CGI and there’s some moments on the island where the pacing comes to a standstill. Jackson does a pretty good job at capturing the heart of old adventure films and does a good job with a “modern” version of the King Kong story. I’d still take this over any monsterverse crap any day. Except for Skull Island that rules.

This film was all surprisingly boring, exciting, and brutal. 20 years later, I finally sat down and watched this beast of a film. First caught it as a kid, and it still slaps. But that’s the magic of revisiting old movies you watch it through grown-up eyes, and man, it hits different. Let’s address the ape in the room: the CGI. Some shots still hold up hard. Kong himself looks straight-up killer even by today’s standards. The raptor chase, though? Yeah, that one’s showing its age. Also just found…

I may not be familiar with the original, but this was my first ever exposure to the story of King Kong, and I have to imagine this is a pretty faithful adaptation. The time period feels right, the tone feels right, and when we finally get to Skull Island, there’s some genuinely fun action. My biggest issue is the ridiculous amount of setup before we actually get there. There’s wayyyyy too much time spent establishing these characters and getting them…

A curious thing about Peter Jackson’s filmography is that so few film share a similar vibe or style than the other. Sure the first three films he made all share the use of comedy and gore, but after that most of his movies feel different from one another. Except this one, this truly feels like it was made by the same guy behind Lord of the Rings, and it’s cool seeing this “action adventure story on a fantastic voyage” in…

He ain’t go shit on me, that’s for sure. “Monsters belong in B movies” is a bold sarcastic claim predictably turned scathingly ironic. Jack Black is an extremely limited actor. He should not be cast in dramas. Naomi Watts gives some of the best wide-eyed reactions I’ve ever seen.

Our Kong is here, here’s that jungle adventure feel but stretched into something more emotionally layered – the island sequence alone is a full film’s worth of ideas. Naomi Watts and the ape have great chemistry which should be very difficult but somehow isn’t. Jack Black is slightly miscast but committed. Andy Serkis as Kong through motion capture is quietly doing extraordinary work. Where it loses you is the runtime. The Skull Island section earns its length. New York doesn’t quite. Still the most emotionally complete Kong film made.

Probably the best remake out there, i do not think that this movie is as groundbreaking as the original, the 1933 version was clearly a once in a generation film it singlehandedly revolutionized special effects, and monster movies. The remake on the otherhand doesn’t feel too stale nor is it a shot for shot remake, it can absolutely stand on its own. The special effects are wonderful, performances are solid all across the board, truly the 8th marvel of the world.
