Made possible by the success of Toho’s ’90s Godzilla films, this slicky-produced Gamera adventure revived everyone’s favourite giant flying turtle as a hero not just for kids. Not a reinvention of the kaiju genre, just a very satisfying example of it. Good-looking, fun, and takes the material seriously without being too serious. Has some lulls during the human scenes, but what else is new? Special effects are significantly more advanced than the classic ’60s Gamera films, and in fact are about on par with the ’60s Godzilla films – in other words, they’re perfect. Gamera is one of the most delightful characters of all time, and almost singlehandedly validates the medium of cinema. Had a good time revisiting this at Toronto’s beloved Revue Cinema.

Pinnacle of the kaiju craft, maybe the most gorgeous giant monster movie ever made. Gyaos nesting in the destroyed Tokyo Tower as the sun sets? Those hyper-real golden hour clouds during the aerial battles? Give me a break.

During my Godzilla and Friends Marathon, I learned that Shusuke Kaneko, director of Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack, also directed a trilogy of Gamera films in the nineties. I immediately knew that I would have to watch them the second I was finished with Godzilla. My only exposure to Gamera, in the past, was an episode of MST3K. So, I know very little about Daiei’s Godzilla knockoff. What I do know, however, is that this was exactly what I was looking for after running out of Godzilla films. It’s better than many of the Heisei and Milennium era Godzilla films. I would expect nothing less from the director of one of the best films in the…

An ancient civilization was probably doomed by that one joker who last-minute snuck the most amok googly eyes into the DNA of the production model Gyaos.

A Walk Amongst Monsters #70 “The last hope, Gamera. We bestow it in the cradle of time. May it awaken with the shadow of evil, Gyaos.” After Godzilla came out of retirement to revitalize his career it only made sense for his old-time rival to do the same. This time though Gamera is determined to avoid the “friend to all children” label that followed him throughout his later career. Needless to say, he succeeded. Unlike the Heisei Godzilla films, which were all very sci-fi, this went heavily into fantasy. It gives the film a unique vibe for the era. Stuff like having Gamera be an ancient creation from the lost city of Atlantis, having a slab with a prophecy imbedded…

“gamera is really on our side!” I love watching how kaiju films handle creature design, especially when you move between eras and tones. So going into this, I was excited – this is the start of the 90s Heisei Gamera trilogy, the one I’ve always heard was darker, more mature, more serious than the old stuff. Which is why the opening threw me so hard. The Gyaos looked like they were straight out of the Showa era – stiff, hanging in the air, blank faces, barely moving. I was honestly disappointed, thinking this might just be another one of those where I enjoy the vibe but stay at a distance. The look of the early scenes threw me almost as…

Some of you have never seen a grown man in a rubber suit pretending to be a giant spinning turtle fight another man in a rubber suit pretending to be a googly-eyed pterodactyl and it shows.

KAIJULY: GAMERA, THE MIGHTY TURTLE Just like with Goji, after going full silly and goofy, Gamera (sort of) returns with a more serious film in which we get very little of our actual title character. It’s mostly focused on the human stuff, and to be fair, that was solid. In fact, pretty enjoyable in that campy, cheesy 90s way. It’s to a certain extent like a better version of Emmerich’s Godzilla. Gyaos looks lowkey terrifying but there’s also a campiness to him that, of course, fits the film’s tone very well. And this is some of the best cinematography I’ve seen from the franchise in a long time, plus the score was good too, raising the tension and suspense in a few moments. HOLLYWOOD: The only way to make giant monster movies that aren’t silly and dumb is to make them drab, colourless, and take place entirely at night in either rain or ash.* 90s GAMERA: lol. whut? Big, a little clumsy, and a satisfying leap forward in how to make a kaiju film that feels fresh, without ever having to sacrifice any of the great monster smashing action. The human stuff is…. fine.

Not as good as the 60s films but still very good and a lot of fun. There should be a law against American made Kaiju movies they suck at them

the atlanteans are way better at this mutually assured destruction shit than us, giant googly-eyed lizard-bats are a way cooler weapon to do that with than nukes. makes us modern humans looks lame as fuck in comparison. also this has an insanely good end credits song. gamera sails out to funkiest song in the whole world.

A great film with an ever relevant message about us needing to protect the planet, using the wonderful, timeless appeal of kaiju to suck you into its story. We should definitely listen to this kind of movie, lest we unleash more horrors soon and destroy ourselves in the process. 4.5/5 🌟! 🌎

Kaiju are actually just humans on the inside.

I’ve been aware of Gamera for quite a while but I’ve never taken the plunge until now. This was basically everything you could want from a classic Kaiju movie: tons of fun campy monster fights, lots of destruction/ explosions, and even likable human protagonists. I suppose I should check out the rest of the trilogy that this movie began.

A film that managed to elevate what kaiju movies could be and it did it in style. Oh man this movie made me fall in love with the genre all over again. Seeped in brilliant mythology and performances from its cast make this a powerhouse of a genre film. The suit-mation is also top of the class delivering a thrilling final battle that stands tall as a crowning jewel of not only the genre but cinema as well. And while…

Flashing like lightning, resilient like a blaze, fast like a rocket, a Japanese snapping turtle succeeded in a mission to defeat the evil Quetzalcoatlus following the upheaval of an ancient civilization. Why have I suddenly started liking Kaiju movies?

it’s the second half of the month and that means we’re into the second half of our month of Remakes & Reboots for 2026’s Movie Club! Rolling right along with Gamera: Guardian of the Universe from Rob — his Letterboxd profile — we’ve got quite the tonal whiplash from Cronenberg’s The Fly last week, but another creature feature in the sense of this movie being about monsters! Tossed this on via Pluto TV which had the English Dub available and was delighted by…

I realized about halfway through that I watched the original Gamera last year, and didn’t like it much, if at all. This is actually a decent improvement on that one, but to be honest I still don’t find much enjoyment in watching this kind of movie. If anything, there were moments that were pretty fun like the rocket booster feet that Gamera uses to fly — although the UFO turtle thing from the original is still my favorite. The fights…

“The sun is no longer on our side.” Humans will destroy civilization long before kaiju ever will. We are the real shadow of evil. I love the implication that Gyaos is a manifestation of (and a punishment for) humanity’s mistreatment of Earth. Gamera being the true explanation for a centuries-old legend about a long-lost continent that sunk to the bottom of the ocean (à la Atlantis) is such an interesting idea. Gamera’s redesign is essentially perfect. Gyaos’s redesign and puppetry…

Why is 90s Gamera better than 90s Godzilla though?

Shūsuke Kaneko’s Gamera: The Guardian of the Universe is by far the best Gamera film I have seen so far. I have heard the Heisei Trilogy only gets better and that has me very excited. I enjoyed the Showa Era Gamera films plenty but they aren’t exactly what I would call good films with the exception of Gamera vs. Barugon and maybe Gamera vs. Guiron. First off, the acting in this is far better than the Showa Gamera films and…

Huge step up from the Showa era. This is more of a reboot of the series and it was overall more enjoyable to watch. The human storyline wasnt annoying and actually tied with the monsters and the fight scenes between Gamera and Gyaos was awesome

FINALLY SOME GOOD FUCKING FOOD. This one really has it all: snappy cuts, a dumbass myhology for Gamera (that I just now noticed, was never the case in the original run), intense fight scenes, and reinterpreting the “friend of all children” aspect into something more respectable for the 90’s, like environmentalism and nuclear proliferation, while still being quintessentially within the series’ traditional themes. The monsters are more mythological than sci-fi, so it feels more like manifestations of nature, and the…

Gamera: Guardian of the Universe is an extremely average Japanese monster movie that goes through the motions of all the tried and true story beats of the genre. The main problem is that it lacks any real personality of its own. Normally I don’t mind that when it comes to this kind of stuff, but the special effects here are often quite subpar. The cheap puppetry is more grating than charming. From what I recall, these 90s Gamera movies get…

Yeah this movie is amazing. Top 5 movies of all time. The music in this film is soooooooo good. I actually cannot describe how much i love this movie. Yeah its the worst of its trillogy, but thats like comparing £1,000,000 to £1,000,000,000 you know? I have exactly one bad thing to say about this movie, and thats that i really dislike the gamera suit in the movie, it looks stupid, and not even in the fun stupid way of…

This is a decent kaiju movie. You have a mixture of special effects. I love some of the miniatures. Most of it looks good. The story isn’t the greatest but at least it’s not boring. This is worth a watch if your into these kind of movies.

FINALLY we ditch the stupid kid’s movie bullshit. Gamera fights another Gyaos monster, which are basically dragons, so that’s fun. Some of the human story was kinda slow, but hey at least the monster action was dope, and I didn’t feel like I needed to be 5 years old in order to enjoy this one. GAMERA: Ranked

This is a lot of fun, Gamera is way more goofy than Godzilla with his googly eyes and his rocket sockets, also not afraid to get some Kaiju violence in.

This movie absolutely saves its best moments for the final 30 minutes if more of Gamera: Gaurdian of the universe was like the climax we’d have an all timer on our hands just takes a little too long to set everything up. Banger miniatures and some crazy explosions can you ask for anything else?

Fun kaiju flick with a few really great moments. The plot is easy to follow and it holds your attention well. Cinematography could have been better. There was only one really memorable shot… a silhouette shot towards the end. Some low effort CGI. A fun climactic fight scene, but I can’t help but think how much cooler it would look at night. The team behind this REALLY didn’t want to repeat the mistakes the Showa movies made, and it shows. Solid kaiju fun

“And they all disappeared because of some bird?” Still don’t understand why they turned the lights off before the dome had closed, but thats Japan for ya, I guess.
