Synopsis

On March 13, 2022, filmmaker Brent Renaud was killed by Russian soldiers, the first American journalist to die while reporting on the war in Ukraine. His younger brother and collaborator, Craig Renaud, recovered Brent’s body and his final recordings from Ukraine and brought them back to their childhood home in Arkansas. As Brent’s journey to his final resting place unfolds, the film chronicles the years he and his brother spent covering some of the world’s most dangerous conflicts.

It feels harsh to say that a tribute to someone’s own brother is unfocused and muddled, but…here we are.

This story makes an anthology of the life of Brent Renaud, traveling through the different documentaries that he made in his lifetime and the influence he had on the people of the films, mixing the old film footage with the present day testimonies. It really affects you when you think that all these pictures were of Renaud. The journalistic and filmmaking duties that he voluntarily took on in such horrific situations are genuinely one of the most amazing things that I have ever seen. And you sense the echo of his influence in the last few minutes, it speaks of something far greater than just doing a job like this for the mere sake of the work. It shows that he was just one of many bridges that were cruelly and unjustly taken away in the name of war. A respectful choice of words to remember his memory.

it’s very remarkable and brave everything brent did, and the way he died was so unfair; he was just showing the reality of some countries, a reality that few accept

did he travel to all these places, interview these grieving mothers, film children with amputations, all for the footage to eventually glorify him? the inclusion of his footage, gathered from iraq, somalia, haiti, afghanistan, serves not to tell the stories of victims, but to show that they were the types of stories he recorded. yet, this surface level inclusion—highlight reel—minimizes their stories to “dangerous wars brent endured”. that footage was not about him, and he didn’t seem like someone who documented for himself. unfortunately self-serving to someone who i like to believe wouldn’t produce this himself

Conflicted about this one. On one hand, I get that the point is to show Brent Renaud’s compassion and commitment to highlighting human stories… But I don’t know if a highlight reel of suffering was the best or the most ethical way to go about this? A tragedy and a big loss for journalism nonetheless.

I didn’t expect to see some of the stuff that I saw in this documentary, but as Craig said, it’s what Brent would have wanted. Photojournalism is such an insane job, was really interesting to get a glimpse of his day to day. I can definitely see this one getting the nomination. Oscars 2026 Ranked

I feel terrible being critical of this documentary, because its subject—Brent Renaud, the first American journalist killed covering the ongoing Russo–Ukrainian War—deserves reverence and an appropriate tribute. That being said, the use of Renaud’s footage from past crises in Haiti, Somalia, Iraq, and Central America, like a horrific “highlight reel” of his life’s work, was a misfire, for me. Renaud’s work in those parts of the world was important, yes. But something felt icky about using footage of people suffering, across the Global South, for a film that primarily eulogizes an American reporter rather than contextualizing and focusing on the various conflicts he was filming. Like, I have serious ethical qualms about any film that makes a literal spectacle of…

This short film is available on HBO Max. I always find it hard to evaluate and rate documentaries that deal with important subjects or people who deserve to be honored and revered. This is one such documentary. I give Brent Renaud, the person, 5 stars for his bravery, persistence, and fierce drive to tell the truth through his photo journalist work in war zones, both domestic and abroad. The importance of his work can not be overstated. However, I found this documentary to be wandering and unfocused. At times it was like a highlight reel jumping from location to location, showing the dangers and dedication of Brent and his brother Craig. At times it was a memorial with those who…

[2026 Oscar-nominated documentary short film] I’m not familiar with Brent Renaud’s works and obviously I don’t know him personally as a person but any journalist who died in a line of duty will always have my utmost respect for their bravery, especially with Renaud’s meticulous work in covering the Russian invasion in Ukraine. With that being said, there is a line between authenticity and exploitation, and this doc unfortunately slipped down into the latter. The unwavering camera pan to his corpse, from still warm off being shot to him lying down in his casket, it almost feel like we’re vultures gawking at him. It’s almost inhumane to film someone like that and saying “He would’ve wanted this” isn’t really a…

Qué mal cuerpo me dejó.

A profound look at the life of a journalist who dedicated his life to the truth. Truly humbling- his brother should be extremely proud of the way he was able to conceive this film in honor of Brent. He is absolutely correct when he says this is what Brent would have wanted- to show the harsh, heavy truths. May he rest in the peace he was never surrounded by here on Earth.

While acknowledging the value of his work and the tragedy of his death, I felt this documentary was a disservice to both. While being moving at times, it lacked any real substance. The way snippets of his work were used here devalued them. I would much rather have watched lengthier documentaries compiling the work he did in each location, and let that work speak as a testimony to his life and career. The brevity of this documentary crossed with the scope it tries to cover visually, ends up leading to something that feels like a clip show of black and brown people suffering to celebrate a white documentarian. For someone who they say was always humanizing the victims of war to a western audience, this kind of does the opposite and replaces the context of these peoples’ war-ravaged lives with the context of a eulogy for the person filming.

Hmmm. I wasn’t sure about this film. On the face of it, it provides us with a poignant critique of the dangers faced, time immemorial, by wartime journalists. Since the Crimean War, if not before, people have donned armbands or carried accreditation that is all the armour they have when they enter zones that any sane person would avoid like the plague. For just as long, they have been perishing at the hands of bullets and bombs. The fact that…

Moral witnessing pursued magnificently through cameras, danger, and devastating professional conviction. The Renauds understand journalism not simply as documentation, but as proximity: individuals quietly choosing to stand near suffering long enough to render distant crises emotionally legible for strangers elsewhere. The camera functions less as professional equipment than as a metaphor for moral attention itself, where witnessing becomes an act of resistance against indifference. Brent feels deeply moving because the film understands how profoundly certain people believe stories matter sufficiently…

I don’t want to give this a bad review because of how impressive and brave Brent Renaud was but honestly it was not the way I feel like his life deserved to be honored. Also not really sure why this was an Oscar nominee this past year (sorry if that’s controversial). But this is what true journalism looks like and for that, respect.

The film did a good job of showing who Brent was. It showed many different real life situations that he was trying to document and fix. I think the film did a good job of using both footage from Brent himself and from others too. It was very graphic but this is probably to show how violent and tragic war and the places he went was. It was nominated for documentary short film. I think this is a worthy nomination and depicts the harsh realities in many parts of the world.

Ironic documentary in that its subject probably would have hated it. And for good reason, too. In some ways, this feels explorative towards those Renaud filmed throughout his life, a choice he himself never would have wanted. He didn’t film those things for them to be used to glorify him, but to show the injustices of the world over. But to stand up for the people caught in the middle of conflict — the victims of imperialism and genocide rather…

Extremely moving, harrowing, personal, and needs to be seen. A documentary involving war, but about the filmmaker himself. This is an incredibly personal picture of brotherhood and dedication.

It’s hard to be critical of this because while I was not familiar with Brent Renaud, his contributions and work are definitely worth celebrating. His legacy is worth capturing brutally and honestly in the way he captured conflict and tragedy. But I can’t help but feel like this documentary makes a spectacle of the locations Brent has gone. Maybe it’s a consequence of this being the footage there is to work with but it really does feel “off” in ways I struggle to describe.

Image is incredibly powerful and easily mishandled. As a fan of documentary I am often wondering about the ethical lines of capturing an image under actual suffering. This documentary, which is strengthened through its heartfelt throughline of a memorial from a brother, makes me appreciate the work of on the grounds war photographers like Brent. If he and others like him were not there, there would be no one to capture and memorialize the moment. Even the threat of capture can be enough to save a life.

On the one hand, I’m grateful for people on the ground bringing important stories from around the world, keeping the facts out there. On the other hand, this man died on the ground in a war that was being reported already, by people who didn’t have to go out of their way to insert themselves into the danger. The movie wants it to be obvious that the danger was worth it, that this guy died doing work that someone had…
