War, eugenics, a decapitated talking head, unionization, the line “erotic dreams”— they really don’t make children’s movies like they used to. Shocking Dreamworks stayed in business after this.

An anti-conformist, neurotic, worker ant falls in love with the colony princess and tries to impress her by posing as a soldier, only to find himself going to battle and becoming part of a deadly conspiracy by a deranged general. Say what you want about Dreamworks’ first attempt to compete with Disney in the feature length animated films arena, “Antz” was one of the most adult-oriented cartoons ever, and remains so even today. The use of satirical humor and the fact that Z, the protagonist, isn’t just voiced by Woody Allen but also shares many of his personality traits, make it clear that the filmmakers made this movie with an eye on a more mature crowd. Not that the younger…

The fact that there’s a big DreamWorks animated movie starring the voice of Woody Allen, and built around the whole Woody Allen shtick, is one of those funny quirks on film history that will always tickle me. I’m glad this exists.

Fuck this movie. I don’t care if it’s actually good or not, the image of a decapitated talking ant head fucks you up when you’re 5 years old

Hearing the word “erotic fantasies” in a dreamworks movie is something that just baffles my brain.

If you’re able to imagine a different voice coming out of the Woody Allen ant, and if you’re able to overlook the slightly anticlimactic ending, and if you’re able to accept the animation for what it was at the time, and if you’re able to overlook that it is very likely this was rushed into production after Jeffrey Katzenberg heard what Pixar were up to and needed a bargaining chip to push Disney away from opposing Prince of Egypt’s release date… if you can get past all that, this movie kinda slaps?

Who is this even for? Why did I watch it over and over as a kid? More importantly HOW?

A
Lmao wtf

the animators really put their all into this movie because they made EVERY SINGLE ants face unique and in doing so they made an ant look strikingly similar to will smith

This is one of the better movies I have seen in a while! Shocked that lots of the popular critics on here overlook it due to pre-conceived ideas that animated films have to be for children and must NEVER contain mild sexual innuendos, and the fact that the characters look a little freaky and not distinct from eachother (which is a tonal and thematic choice I actually quite like) Really creative story with mature writing, surprisingly great visuals for CG…

Capitalist propaganda against marxism, fascism and social determinism? I’d rather watch it as a film about freedom and love.

I watched this once when I was a kid, and all I remembered was the terrifying-looking animation. Sylvester Stallone is in this, and he says the best line in the movie: “You da ant!” In fact, that was the only part of the whole movie that made me feel any kind of emotion other than boredom.

I’ve never understood how something like TOY STORY gets a free pass of sorts for how its aged from a technical perspective and this doesn’t. People punchline it a bit too now but it’s actually a gem as family comedies go. Contrary to popular belief nowadays it wasn’t a flop and it was mostly well received by critics too. It’s very funny (benefiting from a rewrite and further improvisation from its main star) and, seriously, that cast? Woody Allen, Sharon…

Uncanny animation, weirdly adult-oriented… And it was pretty good. Not as good as A Bug’s Life, but still pretty good. I watched it once when I was 17 and I think it was better the second time. I don’t have anything else to say.

The Dreamworks Canon Watch Through Part 1: You can really tell they were working with a very rough stolen pitch of A Bug’s Life. Cause beyond the premise of “Movie about Ants” there’s no similarities. Half of the movie seems like it’s gonna be about Woody Allen Ant getting with this Princess. And like it is, but also there’s a conspiracy to create a coup by instigating a eugenics plan to kill all the worker ants. It’s such a wild…

To be honest, Antz (1998) surprised me quite a bit, as behind its appearance as a late-nineties animated comedy I found a much more explicit political critique than I had expected. I took notes while watching it and, when I went back over them, I noticed that the film constructs a coherent discourse on power, obedience and collective manipulation, developed with a directness that I rarely associate with animated cinema from that period. From the very beginning, the colony is…

DreamWorks’ first animated feature is, in my opinion, still one of their very best. You can relate to Z’s desire to escape societal pressure and find his own identity. I wonder if it’s meant to be an allegory for Communism? One thing’s for certain: it’s surprisingly dark and sometimes violent. My rating: 85%

★½ – BAD DreamWorks Animation – RANKED Deciding to watch all the DreamWorks animated films and rank them just as I did for all the Disney animated films! Starting at the start, the very first DreamWorks animation, one that I hadn’t seen before and one that is not really talked about (and probably for good reason). It’s just a thoroughly unpleasant viewing experience. It’s ugly to look at, everything feels stitled and awkward when it moves, the character designs are…

What on this ant-infested Earth is this movie? For Dreamworks’ first film, it’s surprisingly graphic. There’s a few cusses, some pretty intense gore, and a shockingly cinematic soundtrack for a movie about ants. Also, this film somehow feels like it was directed by Gareth Edward’s, because damn is the sense of scale impressive. This movie is a fever dream. None of the characters are that likeable, the story bounces all over the place, the cast is somehow stacked and yet…

have zero nostalgia for this I just tried to watch it and it was actually fire. it’s ugly if you’re a kid and sorta edgy so that’s why it’s rated so low but good ass movie.

I thought I had seen this before but it was only A Bug’s Life, which is by far a superior film. It could be my massive dislike of anything Woody Allen does, but from the opening scene I was straight up not having a good time.

The first film battle between Pixar and Dreamworks (opening slightly before a Bugs Life followed by Monsters Inc vs Shrek, Shark Tale vs Finding Nemo and more) – with feuds between the studios over who had the idea first. I feel this hurt my appreciation of both Antz and a Bug’s life when they came out and even now I find it hard to talk about one without comparing the two. Like A Bugs Life we have a village idiot…

Revendo como adulto o filme parece bem mais adulto e denso do que quando eu vi quando criança. A história é bem madura, a animação é um pouco datada? Sim! Mas acaba sendo o charme do filme. Os personagens são bons, até o protagonista que é chato algumas vezes é muito carismático quando quer. Dito isso, é um filme bom, mas não chega ser um dos melhores da Dreamworks

Insane! Felt like an acid trip but in the best way possible. Very philosophical and has lot of themes that will go right over a kids head. The main character Z is extremely depressed but does have a peculiar charm to him. Will definitely watch it again.

being the weird kid who liked antz more than bug’s life always thought mandible looked more like costas mandylor than hackman ___________________________________________________________ what separates antz from comparable children’s entertainment operating in political allegory is the specificity of its socioeconomic argument, which operates closer to orwell’s animal farm than the generic individualism-versus-conformity binary most children’s films settle for. animal farm works because orwell understood that a political allegory requires a system rather than a sole villain, and antz applies the same…
