“Is this your god? Killer of children? What kind of fanatics worship such a god?” In 1300 BC, Moses (Christian Bale) has been raised as an adopted member of Egypt’s royal family, alongside Prince Ramesses (Joel Edgerton), and the two men have become brothers. While visiting the Hebrews the Egyptians have enslaved for 400 years, Moses is told about his true heritage as a son of Hebrew slaves who was raised by Pharaoh’s daughter … Exodus: Gods and Kings is an epic biblical film directed by Ridley Scott, based on the Book of Exodus. The film received negative reviews and underperformed at the box office, while attracting controversies for its historical inaccuracies and whitewashing, leading to the film being banned…

Action!: The Scott Brothers – How To Get Screwed By Spielberg Twice W/ Ridley Scott The year was 2014. The Hollywood industry was in full swing of this trend at that time which took fantasy stories and gave them a more realistic spin. Any element of fantasy or hope is left behind in favor of a dark and brooding atmosphere. During the same period of time another trend emerged (but this was shorter), where directors took these Bible stories and stripped much of their most supernatural elements, these two directors, Aronofsky and Scott, tried to translate these stories and give their iconic characters a large dose of doubt, questioning their own beliefs, an “atheist touch” if you will. SPOILER ALERT:…

When I hear the name Ridley Scott, I have a image of Blade Runner in my mind with the atmosphere of Alien and the epicness of Gladiator. But for the last few years Ridley Scott has lost his way in the imagery of movies. His recent movies are a visual treat but when we think of the content he is presenting it isn’t what he was showing 10 years back. Exodus Gods and Kings is a story about Humans and God. How the human considered themselves god and above all. And how one God tends to show his power with the help of Moses who I thought through this movie was just an messenger free the people who have been…

Ridley Scott. Ridley. Fucking. Scott. I mean just look at all the crazy shit he’s covered in his career. I am beyond impressed with his body of work, and he definitely wows me in many ways with his latest, “Exodus: Gods and Kings”. I can’t tell you how incredible the shots in this movie are. The battle scenes are some of the best I’ve ever seen. EXTRAORDINARY. They were so good that I wanted all of them to last longer. UGH every jaw-dropping shot was cut away from so quickly to another jaw-dropping shot, to another jaw-dropping shot, etc. that I had no time to really appreciate them as much as I wanted :/ I’m so glad epics are still…

technically only the second most boring movie called EXODUS. wants very much to be KINGDOM OF HEAVEN crossed with 2012 but is both insufficiently thoughtful and insufficiently bonkers. a whitewashed cast is the least of its problems.

a big dumb expensive-looking epic by a director who likes to make big dumb expensive-looking epics, so what’s to hate? the white-washing, yeah, not great, but i have more of an issue with the bloodless swordfights mandated by the $200 million dollar budget. i mean, come on, out of all the films that ridley scott should have a director’s cut for, THIS is the one that would benefit the most from that, and yet… we’re just stuck with this weird revisionist/atheistic take on the bible that’s afraid to be brutal & gritty, which is what it needs to be, because ridley’s real good at that. exodus isn’t bad, it’s quite stupendously-made in several respects, but it’s also just obviously compromised in a way that so many modern hollywood films tend to be obviously compromised.

it’s clear what interests Ridley, or at least feels different–the first 30 mins at Egyptian court actually have some juice–but boy does this get sluggish as it yadda yaddas the Haggadah. for an actor I like, Bale has a lot of star vehicles that’s just him with a beard grumbling at folks

Terrible film overall, but I enjoyed Ridley going beastmode for the ten plagues. I was very intrigued by the faint whiffs of thematic threads that the story sets up but ultimately they don’t get explored in any depth. Better to go elsewhere in Ridley Scott’s late period ouvre for more meaningful expressions of what he really wants to say.

I actually don’t care about “historical accuracy” or all the creative liberties Ridley Scott takes. At this point, I go into his movies assuming he’s going to change a bunch of things, and I really don’t mind that. I’m perfectly fine with it when those changes serve the director’s vision or give us a different take on a familiar story. The problem here is that the changes don’t add anything. They don’t make the story more interesting, more surprising, or…

Honestly, regardless of the very questionable casting of white actors as Egyptians and Hebrew people especially because unlike Ten Commandments 1956, this movie was produced in the modern day, this movie is still very much a snoozefest to get through. Even with great actors like Christian Bale as Moses and Joel Edgerton as Ramses, the acting feels wooden as the characters are quite shallow and Scott’s directing even compared to Gladiator II is quite weak and the pacing is incredibly…

It tries to be a grounded, semi-realistic version of this story, which is absolutely the incorrect approach. You can’t try to make it grounded in reality when there’s a vengeful god sending an assortment of plagues on people. Or maybe you can, but this ain’t it. In my opinion, go full epic with the plagues or go home. Also, the casting is A Choice. Constantly.

Not Ridley Scott quoting himself by forcing Commodus’ iconic “he sleeps so well because he is loved” into this film???? Painfully bad despite Christian Bale’s best efforts.

Mosè irriconoscibile, sceneggiatura scritta coi piedi, ritmo pessimo, salvo solo effetti speciali e qualche scenografia.

I think I’ve reached rock bottom with Ridley Scott. This movie was horrendously awful. Not only are the performances garbage. Not only is the story a boring mess. Not only are the visuals lackluster… The worst thing about this movie is the utter disrespect it shows to the source material, whether it was intentional or not. This adaptation misses the point of the exodus story almost completely. The whole point of this story is that Moses is a sheperd coming…

I actually enjoyed this more than I remembered doing so previously. Really liked the way they did the plagues of Egypt, thought the pacing was good, and it looks great – I’d always expect this Ridley Scott film though. Joel Edgerton isn’t the right choice for Ramses and no, I’m not alluding to the casting controversy (although honestly, WHAT were they thinking?!), his line readings just felt off. I’m not a religious man so I don’t really care about how true to the Bible it is, I simply had a good time watching a ‘historical’ epic.

Damn it Ridley, why do you have to be so bloody inconsistent. Exodus wasn’t terrible because it had some decent visuals and music but it gets incredibly boring, the dialogue is not great and the casting is very strange. Bale’s performance was alright but everyone else was not good at all. I’d recommend watching the animated classic The Prince of Egypt instead of this!

It’s taken me 3 days to watch this. I just finished the last 30 mins. How is this the same guy who made Gladiator, Alien, and Blade Runner?? This is lowkey Ridley Scott’s Noah, but somehow even worse. I just don’t even know you can manage to fuck up this story on this level. May be the worst cast of any movie I’ve seen before.

Grounded, realistic and epic interpretation of the well-known Biblical tale🔥
-
T
Peacock suggested I watch Battleship next as the credits began to roll lol. In the pantheon of needless Hollywood epics this one is pretty high up the list of “why”. No one was clamoring for yet another whitewashed biblical tale, let alone a “realistic” one. Why focus on the possible realism of the events around the story when everyone is speaking English with different accents? What is the point of suspending one disbelief while going the opposite direction on another?…

I can say nice things about this movie. The scale is impressive. Bale is a great casting for Moses. The plagues have literally never been better depicted on screen (especially water into blood) The script is abominable. This is the weakest version of the Moses/Ramses relationship that’s been done. Crossing the Red Sea was somehow both boring and very dumb. Easily one of Scott’s most disappointing movies. But as always, even his movies that are bad, or are a mess are still interesting. This movie isn’t good, but it is interesting.

J
• This analogy may not completely work, but Ben Mendelsohn is the Aaron Schock of ancient Egypt. • I hope Sigourney got paid well for this favor to Ridley, because she has a nothing role. • You cannot tell me Miriam wasn’t played by Noomi Rapace. • It’s inherently funny that god is portrayed as a child who is also a mass murderer. • It’s even funnier when Ramses points the whole mass murder thing out to Moses and he’s just like 🤷🏻♂️. • Speaking of Ramses where does that sometimes random third syllable come from? Ram-uh-ses??

Solid film , just wish it was accurate to the actual story of Moses within the Bible, they should have shown more of the challenges the Israelites went through and the origin of Moses since his birth to the end of his life if possible, and the plagues should have been more accurate including Gods name aswell alongside “I am that I am” or “I will become what I choose to become” wish they could show Moses true relationship with…

Awful lot of white people in this movie about the Middle East. There’s not much I would call epic about this epic film. Two and a half hours isn’t terrible for a story like this, but it still dragged quite a bit, and I never felt that engaged with it while watching. A tight 90-100 minutes could have made this more fun.

Watched: 2026 August 12th 1:05pm Exodus: Gods and Kings is visually stunning, but the whole plot really did not capture my attention. The story is depicted in a boring way and I struggled to finish the film. There is so many potential wasted. Moses’s story is a remarkable event in the Bible and the Book of Exodus, however, the film lacks the emotional depth of Moses born as a hebrew slave but ended up being raised as an Egyptian Prince, and him eventually saving all the Israelite slave.
-
N
A great adaptation of Moses’ story alongside the animated The Prince of Egypt. Ridley Scott feels like the perfect director for a movie like this, and he delivers with incredible CGI and cinematography. Christian Bale never disappoints, as he always manages to steal the show wherever he appears. Joel Edgerton is also solid, as is the rest of the cast. What slightly brings the movie down is that it drags in some parts and the plot takes a while to move forward, but honestly, it doesn’t deserve the hate I’ve seen for it.

So I looked into it and between Gladiator and Exodus, Ridley Scott made ten films. Of those ten, six didnt even manage to break even. The four that did well, weren’t necessarily even super successful, they were just decently successful. Oddly lifeless. Probably the last of a specific type of Hollywood epic, both in the way this feels like those old Cecil B DeMille pictures, and how it lives in the aftermath of the Dark Knight when everything had to have a gritty sheen.

Ridley Scott tackles the story of Moses like he’s directing a post‑Gladiator epic, but Exodus: Gods and Kings ends up as a film obsessed with scale rather than life. The imagery is massive — deserts carved like monuments, pyramids towering over everything, plagues staged with almost horror‑like brutality — yet the whole thing feels cold and distant, never emotionally alive. Christian Bale plays a tormented Moses, though the script gives him no real psychological arc; he shifts roles without any…

Amazing how much money and hard work were thrown at this cackhanded crap, the GDP of a small country wasted on a script the majority of whose lines are about as tortuous as this sentence (!) – an incoherent, wobbly mess that can’t decide if the Israelites are freedom-fighters fighting for Republican-Party-style freedoms… or religious, fanatic terrorists. (Mainly the former, but, watching them, one suspects the latter). Nothing here works and nothing is interesting, and the epic scale of it just serves to magnify the vain pointlessness of the project. This is the worst film I’ve seen for some time.
