i love noir that doesn’t fetishize serial killers as being Epic Cool Geniuses™ but instead knows that they’re pathetic losers with the world’s worst hobby — liam neeson has been making consistently good mid-budget thrillers for well over a decade now, and walk among the tombstones is no exception, it’s tinged with a gnarly undercurrent of brutality amidst neeson’s attempt to find moral resolution and absolution — the detective is the last vestige of chivalry in a world gone adrift into the mad digital cosmos. you can help someone on the path towards making the right choice, but ultimately you cannot make that choice on their behalf — the system of violence continues to churn, the shadows deepen, the rain falls, and man ages into the earth — who is left to stalk the graveyards of all the souls who pass us by for the last time?

men stupid enough to look into the abyss might not even have a soul to save. frank gives block’s hard-boiled detective paperbacks their grisly, unpretentious due.

Gritty and unpretentious hard boiled detective movie starring Liam Neeson as a ex-cop in recovery who does unlicensed PI work and takes place in a certain borough called “Brooklyn?” Yes please. Special shout out to a pre-Stranger Things David Harbour who shows up here as one of the most terrifying and repellent villains I’ve ever seen.

I might be the only one, but I believe Scott Frank’s A Walk Among the Tombstones has an Americanized neo-giallo vibe. Instead of an American in Rome, we have an Irishman in New York City, attempting to solve the mystery of a kidnapping turned gruesome murder. The sound. The piano music plays like it was ripped from an Argento film. The directing. There’s a shot of a little girl dressed like Little Red Riding Hood, and she walks right in front of two Big Bad Wolves. The element of mystery. This isn’t some cookie cutter Taken clone. Rather, it’s a more complex story, as you watch Liam solve the mystery, clue by clue. He’s a one man Scooby-Doo detective service.…

gutter NYC trash set in early 2000s Red Hook (mostly) that’s fairly repellent for something marketed as a typical Neeson bone breaker — not sure how well it works as a Block adaptation but as decidedly grim neo-noir, it’s suitably hopeless stuff

This is incredibly solid, and surprisingly nasty. Feels highly underrated, especially based on the other reviews I’m seeing on here. Also, David Harbour is genuinely creepy here.

Was going to watch 2023’s “Marlowe” last night, despite the lukewarm reviews, just because I’m a fan of the iconic Raymond Chandler character…but then I remembered Liam Neeson has another private detective movie, one that is far more acclaimed on Letterboxd, so I made an appointment with “A Walk Among the Tombstones.” I’m so glad I did. This 2014 film from writer/director Scott Frank (“The Lookout,” “Godless,” “The Queen’s Gambit”) is a stellar crime drama that still feels unheralded to me, perhaps because it got lost in the shuffle between Neeson’s “Taken” sequels. Regardless, this is anything BUT your average Neeson Dad Actioner—it’s much closer to the likes of “Silence of the Lambs” or “Prisoners,” a downbeat and reflective genre…

My kind of action/crime flick, shot far better than the majority of stuff these days, looking forward to a rewatch real soon. Probably my favorite Liam Neeson flick without “Dark” or “Man” in the title.

A tale of a cop who turns vigilante. And Liam neeson. Yes please.

In which Liam Neeson joins forces with the nicest drug traffickers around and the most misogynistic young boy he can find. Very formulaic. No surprises here. Bleak and a bit uncomfortable to watch at times, but does not have a style distinctive enough to make the movie stand out. Also I don’t like young sidekick boy characters who are supposed to be charming because they can fend for themselves and have a mouth on them. Extremely annoying when poorly written.

Anything Liam Neeson is in good. I don’t make the rules

This was way better than I was expecting, mainly thanks to being an adaptation of a dark crime novel by Lawrence Block. Having an alcoholic ex-cop turned detective seems cliché, but Liam Neeson really fits the mould as Matthew Scudder – a recurring character in Block’s novels. It’s set in 1999, and the whole Y2K thing keeps cropping up as the theme outlined in the film’s tagline “people are afraid of all the wrong things” maintains a constant, looming presence.…

Decent Liam Neeson crime thriller, enjoyed it and it would have been even better if the storyline hadn’t dragged in a few parts. Despite this I wouldn’t call it boring, I love watching Liam take out the trash.

-

Entertaining. It touches a crude, obscure, and tough topic w the killers and that stuff but it does not ends up capturing that feeling throughout all the movie. Sometimes it feels slow and boring. Its fine.

This is a pretty solid noir thriller. It’s very deliberately paced. And I think it works for the most part. It could’ve been a little shorter. Kinda meanders a bit, but I think this one is a bit overlooked in terms of Liam Neeson movies.

Pretty much what you’d expect. A solid pulpy detective thriller and Liam Neeson does his usual cool guy mumbling. He was still a few years from fully entering his geezer teaser phase. A fine movie, but probably pretty forgettable.

Uitstekende jaren ’70 detective film zeg! Fantastische sfeer en veel up and coming acteurs in kleinere rollen die later groter zijn geworden, altijd een goed teken dat de regisseur weet wat ie doet

I have to admit that I am not a fan of Liam Neeson. But here, he is doing a fine job: convincing, authentic and a hero & anti-hero at the same time. The plot is thrilling, the action is fine & the entire movie is highly entertaining. The necessity of the sub-plot, with the boy, is arguable. I think, it could have been left out, because it doesn’t contribute to nothing. Overall good stuff.

Easy to mistake at a glance for a disposable Taken-core dad thriller, it is instead disposable in the Blockian mold – which is to say, indispensable, provided these kinds of pulpy, mean-spirited, competence porn crime stories are your thing. They are very much my thing! Neeson’s performance (appropriately flat, but layered, and delivered like he’s biting down on a leather strap the whole time) and some overqualified cinematography make it so this probably won’t just bounce off most people, and if names like Block, Lehane, Hammett, Stark, or Leonard are meaningful to you then it’s a great way to spend two hours.

Liam Neeson’s hardboiled detective is searching for good in an evil world. A man walking mean streets who is himself not mean, doing right as best he can. Grim and descends into outright horror at various points, but also surprisingly tender. David Harbour’s depraved serial killer is one of the most repellent and scary villains of 2010s cinema. It’s almost enough to make you lament how Stranger Things saved him from playing heavies like this.

7/10 A pretty good modernized neo-noir thriller with Liam Neeson delivering a very good performance along with having a very strong supporting cast, decent cinematography, more than adequate storyline, the appropriately unsettling vibes and atmosphere throughout the film, and competent direction and writing. I wished the pacing was a little better though. Still, nonetheless this movie is easily way more memorable than a lot of the post-Widows disposable forgettable slop that Neeson been doing lately. Recommended. Watched on Amazon Prime Video.

“Once they’re in the van they’re just body parts.” One of those movies just made of pure evil, I’m a big fan. Really good supporting cast put together for this extremely bleak mid budget thriller (Harbour, Stevens and Holbrook)

P
From the co-creator of The Queen’s Gambit comes a generic mystery thriller that hits the notes that you’d expect from a film like this without doing anything to stand out from others. There’s a good cast and a solid plot buildup here, but it ultimately leads to a boring finale that takes to long. A well made and acted film, yet there’s not much meat on it.

A rather standard but nonetheless fairly enjoyable Neeson tough guy thriller. A somewhat cliche sidekick and a slightly confusing plot near the halfway point ultimately ends with a satisfying and gritty conclusion.

saw this movie in a list somewhere, a movie that “still holds up” and i gotta say i was pleasantly surprised. a great noir detective story with characters that felt mostly real, with a very grey line between good and evil. motives are very much left up in the air but i think that made this movie better. liam nesson is great in this but he really just plays himself all the time with a different accent. but if you are looking for a strong crime movie with a lot of suspense, watch this.

What a waste of talent. .But still this is a good film though

Biblical retribution, vengeance and redemption run through Liam Neeson movies like “Walk Among the Tombstones,” “Absolution,” “Land of Saints and Sinners,” “Memory,” “Blacklight,” “The Marksman,” & many more. As cop-turned-p.i. Shudder, an AA 12-step for nearly a decade, he’s hired by Brooklyn drug trafficker Kristo to track down psycho killers (Harbour & Thompson are spun outta control) who kidnapped & killed his wife and kept the ransom money. Along the way, Scudder befriends (is befriended by?) homeless teen detective wanna-be TJ (Astro Bradley) & comes across Green Wood Cemetery groundsman pigeon-keeper kidnap accomplice Jonas (Olafsson). Decisions, decisions.

I think one in every ten Liam neeson movies has something decent going on in it. Now don’t misunderstand: this film is pretty typical thriller territory for the action star. There’s revenge, women in danger, tough guy neeson who’s not to be messed with, but also has his own demons… But I think there are a few cool things about this film. I like the villains who, as people have pointed out, are total losers and creeps. They found dea…

Style over substance with this one. Mistakenly assumed to be in the vein of Taken, this is actually a lot slower-paced and is more of a 90s-based noir film than an action film. The style in the direction was unique whilst, overall, it was maybe a little too grey and overlong for me.

As a fan of the Scudder books, it’s fun to see an adaption so compelling. While this rating may feel low. This is a very top tier 3 star movie. Every performance given just as much energy as it needs. Subdued camera work, unobtrusive score, and a nice sub-2 hr. runtime makes this highly watchable and easy to recommend for any crime movie fan. It’s easy to forget in the age of Direct to Shitteo Liam Neeson, that when he’s got even just a pittance to work with, he brings a presence and warmth to a movie unlike most other “action stars”.

A good stab at Neo-Noir that misses the mark. Cinematography is decent. The protagonist is interesting enough, with characters that are equally intriguing and dark, all set in the backdrop of the seedier side of New York in the 90’s. Dialogue is clever and punchy, the action scenes are grounded and brutal. However the actual mystery is lackluster and predictable, with pacing being all over the place. And then, there’s this odd drop off in writing/narrative quality towards the last…

I watched this once years ago and forgot most of it. It is about a the murder of a drug boss’s wife and the aftermath. He hires Neeson to find and bring the murderers to him. …

Together with my mum we tried to understand what this movie is even about all the way through it. It has so much nonsense threads, which add nothing to the plot, but only complicates it. I know I’ve seen at least parts of this before, a rooftop scene and the fight at the end. It’s a solid dark thriller from before Neeson becoming a parody of this character in a bunch of dreck.

My childhood was a waste because recovering alcoholic Liam Neeson never took me under his wing and showed me how to use a gun during it.

Decent neo-noir. Performances are a mixed bag, but Neeson is solid. Looks great. Love the ‘99 setting. Lotta dead women. Not a lotta living women.

Liam can definitely deliver an intimidating self assured line like no one else.

Good direction, gritty, could’ve been a bit shorter and I watched the entire movie waiting for something else to happen but it just didn’t.

I don’t care if this movie is good or bad. I remember how much I loved it, so nostalgia always wins. Besides, it’s Liam Neeson hunting serial killers in a somewhat murky film with a super dark aesthetic, it’s art.

Better than a typical Neeson action movie but not quite as thrilling as a better crime drama

Gritty hunting a killer flick with a very young David Harbour. A good popcorn Liam Neeson movie.

Watched at home with Justin. IMO: David Harbour’s best.

I was really surprised, what an incredible movie!

One of Neeson’s better movies in recent years after basically being typecast after Taken and playing the same character constantly. The plot is intriguing and there are some good action scenes. There are definitely some pacing issues but overall I enjoyed my time.

One of the better movies in the liam neeson genre. Can u believe he used to turn down roles cuz he didn’t wanna do action?

A Walk Among the Tombstones is yet another action thriller pitting Liam Neeson in a role where he has to ‘find and kill somebody.’ Yes, this isn’t the most original premise in the world and it’s going to have to compete with the upcoming Tak3n but I would be very surprised if that surpasses this. Taking the current trend for basic camera work, seedy streets and ‘setting everything at night and at some undetermined point in time somewhere in the…
