visually bold, incredibly layered, formally progressive and genuinely jaw dropping especially in the world of neutered grey hollow comic book joints, with no real humanity in them. this is the only version of the hulk that understands he’s a man, not a meltdown. i see myself in bruce banner, where he struggles with the meltdowns he can’t control, where he breaks and screams and causes destruction and shakes beyond comprehension after it ends. the pain doesn’t end, the bruises take time to heal and so does the emotional trauma of losing yourself to your own mind, of not being able to grasp your own body, of feeling like your trauma defines you. but this movie makes me feel like my meltdowns can be used for something better, even if that’s just directing my destruction towards those who need tearing apart, and this movie understands, as mawkish as it sounds, that love can help us through. thanks ang

Half way through the movie I twisted my ankle walking to the bathroom, and then fainted in the METROGRAPH lobby. Deep appreciation to Maya and the rest of the staff there for being remarkably attentive, supportive, and considerate. Anyway, first half of HULK still rips. Assume the second half played just as well. (on 35mm)

This movie has problems but it is also the only movie that actually even tries to meaningfully depict Bruce Banner dealing with his anger as a central theme for this character.

“You’re nothing but a superficial shell, a husk of flimsy consciousness ready to be torn off at a moments notice.” Could never be made now. Fundamentally depressing, bold, and forward-thinking—I doubt a better film centred around Bruce Banner and the buried emotions that shape him will ever be made than this.

it is so special to me to have watched this with my girlfriend on the day of a pretty bad meltdown. she took care of me throughout the day, showed me all the love in the universe and helped me calm down. this is one of the best encapsulations of what it’s physically and emotionally like to melt down, and I helped her see the movie through an autistic lens. but the best part of watching it with her is that I got to see it through her eyes as well, experiencing her reading of traumatic memories and repression, both of us finding a greater understanding of each other through our perceptions of this film. I will always be grateful for the mad bastard Ang Lee for this one.

84 The only Hulk adaptation that will ever matter to me. Neither a figure utilized for applause moments nor cheap sympathy – Ang Lee imbues each plastic, manipulated moment with seismic reverberations of trauma and generational dissonance. Almost constantly quiet, only to quickly lash out and settle within the dust. Kevin Feige would never produce something as idiosyncratic or as tempered again.

I haven’t seen this movie in years and have a new respect for it. It does its own thing. I don’t like the way the Hulk looks or transforms, but I love the way he moves, wrecks and does Hulk things. Something good to find here, something bad as well.

why is it always radiation exposure smh :// what’s up with the “transitions” ?? they’re so overused yet somehow still aren’t smooth. and his dad experimenting on him when he was a baby ..? wow 😬 but oh wow, this movie bored me. i genuinely wanted to like it because i really do like hulk, but i found myself almost not wanting to finish it. the pacing just didn’t work for me, and there wasn’t enough action to keep me…

Yeh… look. I love that Ang Lee made such bold choices. At first I hated it, but after a while I grew to appreciate the effort and time it would’ve taken to execute that goal. However, it does not save this film, whatsoever. I’m glad we gave a lot of attention to Bruce and his psyche but fuck, man… as soon as you give me a flashback within a flashback to reveal backstory I grow very tiresome. Characters make so many stupid non sensical decisions and I just did not care for the stakes at all. Lame. 4/10 upon reflection, should be lower but Jennifer Connelly

Four good things I have to say about this film: The score is great, Sam Elliott is solid as Ross, there are exactly two shots that are at all decent and Jennifer Connelly is breathtakingly fine. This movie is actually genius for being an interactive meta experience that shows you what it’s like to be as utterly pissed off as the Hulk. I am at a loss for not only how mind numbingly awful this is, but also for the…

The movie’s screenplay had some beautiful and very emotional moments that really would’ve stood out if not for a plot that was so damn safe that it restricted the entire film from being something better. Sometimes, you could really see the movie clashing with itself; With the emotional parts struggling to break free from its boring ahh shackles. So ig u can say it was character accurate?😭 Life as a Hulk fan is so tough bro i blame israel for us not having more hulk solo movies

Possibly the one hulk film that was the PERFECT hulk movie and a great movie in general. Banners slow remembering of his past and him and his mother being abused as a child and him being too scared to confront that past is so beautiful to me bro, especially the showing of the hulk being disappointed in banner for still choosing the safety of others instead of the safety of himself(And the hulk obviously).

daddy issue hulk movie is pretty good until it’s not loved the editing in parts, really felt like a comic book brought to life however it became a little messy towards the end of the movie pacing all over the place the suppression of trauma is a really interesting idea that humanizes bruce in a nice way bottling up those emotions is something i found quite relatable eric bana

-
J
I think it’s a great structured story, executed very well! We learn more about Bruce Banner’s back story. Excellent style of editing, brining in the comical elements. Also Hulk was portrayed as very strong and dominant!. But obviously the CGI was horrendous and cheesy, but it was 2003.

Ehh. You know what? I think I’m a fair bit more appreciative and kinder towards it since my last viewing. The stylised, very literal visual interpretation of a “comic book adaptation” is still pretty inspired, it allows each shot to be composed carefully in a very unique and frankly beautiful manner at times. It’s a shame that no other superhero film from memory (apart from the Spider-Verse films, but they’re animated so that’s cheating) has tried this approach. Not…a particularly remarkable bit…

-

Actually fell asleep during the last quarter, mainly due to how slow the pacing and run time is… Still underrated. If Eric Bana turns up in Doomsday or Secret Wars, I’d freak the fuck out

yikes… my favorite super hero btw. im waiting for a day when we have enough nuance with this chartcher to not just have him be misunderstood and be an actual established hero, in a solo film. i liked some of the editing but like chill. It was edited like a comic, but written like shit, acted like shit and it looks like shit. Lets give Ang Lee another crack at it though, he put his all into this, for better or for worse.

this would probably be one of the worst movies to watch while tripping. ALSO why did I rate this 2 stars???? I love all the experimental wacky transitions and split screens. It really feels like I’m watching a living breathing comic book. The fights were nuts like I really think Hulk punches one of the rabid dogs in the nuts. CRAZY. This version of Bruce is probably the most relatable in my opinion over some of the most recent Hulks.…

Guys, if I ever turn into the Hulk, still send in Jennifer Connelly. I mean, it’s old and it’s kinda before superhero movies developed a formula for what works but I really applaud it for taking some big swings. Hated it when I was little, but I appreciate the shit out of it now. The only Hulk film where Bruce Banner feels like a guy with actual issues and repressed anger. The film lacks in action and the pacing is all over the place, but even the instances where hulk does appear, he isn’t “hulk smash” mode all the time. He feels like a separate character from Bruce or even a toddler version of him. Showing glimpses of his childlike wonder, confusion and anger. Truly two beings sharing the same traumas.
-

Very ambitious. This movie had the recipe—the execution sucked. I love the comic book panel transitions and how much of an action spectacle the Hulk is, but I still crave more action because its the Hulk! The lore of Brian Banner’s abuse is a good addition, but making him become the Absorbing Man and villain of the movie was a poor decision. Let Hulk’s enemy be his own rage, I say. I do love that we see Hulk actually do…

Yeah it was a lot better as a kid. This was the movie that made me look up Bruce Banners origin on marvel.com and that was a lot better than this whole movie put together. The dialogue between Bruce and Betty was so dry and unalive. I thought the scenes of the hulk were good and decent cgi action for its time. Other than the scenes of the past of Bruce’s abusive childhood it’s gonna be a thumbs down for me 😔.

Wow.

Kind of insane how I loved this movie as a child lmao Takes a big swing which I appreciate — partly a melodrama, partly a summer blockbuster that actually explores Bruce’s repressed anger and trauma beyond “you don’t wanna see me angry >:)”. Nick Nolte absolutely eats it up on screen and combining Hulk’s villains here to create a literal manifestation of Banner’s trauma is smart — and makes for one of the most unique 3rd act brawls in the…

I’m really happy that Spider-Man: Brand New Day has people talking about The Hulk again. The story of Bruce Banner and The Hulk is one of my personal favorite realms of fiction, and I’ve always had a deep admiration for Ang Lee’s adaptation. it’s an extremely worthwhile adaptation of the character that delves into aspects that later films wouldn’t even attempt. The way Lee presents the relationship between Bruce and his father gives both Bruce’s transformation, and The Hulk’s character a profound…

THE Lou Ferrigno had a cameo as the security guard talking to Stan Lee. Crazy how Betty was able to find Bruce’s dad all on her own. But her dad a colonel in the military interrogated Bruce and still couldn’t find him. I think Eric Bana is an Incredible Hulk/Bruce Banner.

Whether one likes this movie or not, we have to admit, how crazy it is that Ang Lee got to express his story about childhood trauma unleashing inside one years later, in the form a superhero summer blockbuster. Crazy move but who am I to argue lol Most any other director would have made HULK SMASH: THE MOVIE But Lee decides to take the concept of Hulk being controlled by his emotions, to the absolute extreme. Maybe it dosen’t work…

GAH! We were so close man. We were so so close. It’s all here: Betty, Banner, and Ross are all so well cast! Amazing editing style too! This rendition of the Hulk himself visually looks a little weird but it’s the best in terms of the character’s physicality. And the Hulk is such a badass in this movie. He catches a missile, bites the tip off, and spits it at a helicopter breaking it. There’s like a 20 minute stretch…

C
Hulk is just 138 minutes (way too long for a Hulk movie btw) of me saying “This movie is probably a lot better if you just change _______” This script just sucks. It doesn’t help that Eric Bana is just so BORING as Bruce Banner. Additionally, Jennifer Connelly is kind of awful as Betty Ross, she has the emotional pallet of a rock. The CGI doesn’t hold up either, this movie is just one big miss. Marvel Rewatch

It’s at least bold, clearly made by a director doing what he envisioned, and unapologetically Ang Lee. The freeze frame, windows 98 editing is some of the funniest stuff I’ve ever watched. Everyone says the 2008 one is better but that one is honestly just boring and a very cookie-cutter manufactured movie by the Marvel corporate machine. very pleasant watch! i like how hulk is portrayed as a complex character who represses traumatic, romantic, and grieving emotions. it really humanizes him (as ironic as that may be) and from this perspective you’re definitely inclined to give him a lot more grace and be more empathetic towards his situation. his dad, on the other hand, was so manipulative that even i thought i was thinking too harshly of him at a point (example was when he broke into…

Childhood movie of mine, I remembered this to be a bit better, I don’t quite love the ending but the rest of it is so unique and makes this a very special film in the superhero genre. The soundtrack I believe is fantastic and often overlooked, the psychological depth they wanted to give Banner is also interesting. Overall this movie has a very bold but imperfect quality to it. At least Ang Lee wanted to do something more profound than a standard action movie, and I deeply respect that.

I was obsessed with Hulk, so this was my favorite movie ages 5 through 7. Which means nostalgia is a legitimate flaw with my perspective. But I don’t really care. This film deserves a reappraisal. It’s a unique take on childhood trauma and complex father and son relationships. The dialogue (particularly expository) can be a bit clunky. Nonetheless, it leads to a final showdown that is one of the most emotionally resonating finales you will witness in a superhero movie.…

With each rewatch, this movie gets better. And since it was recontextualized as a universal monster movie, it opened itself even more to me. This movie has more in common with the Wolf Man than any other superhero movie. A man is cursed with an affliction that makes him a danger to all those around him. The remake of the wolf man even adds a monstrous father figure similar to this film. I just really dig this movie and always have. There is so much to extract from this. I love it! 3.1/10 I know that i would´ve probably loved this as a kid, but now that i watch i´m not a kid anymore and goddamn this one stinks, it has some kind of extremly trashy charm but at the same time it also just looks laughably bad and everything without the hulk on screen is damn boring, so yeah it´s just really bad but also a little bad one of the it´s so bad it´s good movies

great version of the hulk, i can appreciate almost everything about this movie. the trauma that induces his rage, you can feel it. the editing style and transitions are sometimes a bit much in some scenes but it’s still neat. the music was perfect. definitely great casting, everyone brought in real emotions, especially bana as bruce/hulk

few movies have ever had this much aura. better than anything the mcu has ever made. really beautiful at moments. one of the best scores ever.

So much to unpack First hour is super slow as hell, but after the first hulk scene, nostalgia hits, and the truest form of hulk we ever gotten on screen comes to life. Its sooo nice to refresh my memory on how destructive this version of the hulk is compared to what we have in the MCU. Also, really dives deep into Bruce’s emotions and how it effects him long term. Really good story elements tbh. And Danny Elfman as the composer?? Idk why it has a average of 2.2, its not even bad whatsoever.

actually a really good movie I was not aware one could transition movie scenes as cleanly as that what the actual hell were they cooking in 2003 that was ridiculous I had never heard of or seen Eric Bana before this movie but he was actually really good. I love Mark Ruffalo and I’m thankful he is the Hulk we got as I think he has a slight edge over Bana and Edward Norton, but that might just be because…

unique, emotional, artistic, the cgi is whatever for its time but that’s not relevant to how interesting of a path Ang Lee took with directing this. It’s absolutely trippy and a real exploration of Bruce’s emotional journey

Eric Bana in this movie was my gay awakening when it came out. Thats about it.

the way they kept spamming these ridiculous transitions + Hulk’s jumps where he’d just skyrocket into the air made this so surreal and funny 😭 but this had some really strange, dreamlike explorations of trauma that actually made me more interested in the character’s backstory. I can appreciate that Ang Lee fully committed to his own bizarre style

Thank you for the introduction to the cookie that is Eric Bana. Need that! Also Jen you look gorgeous diva! This movie felt long as hell and it was long as hell. The constant split screening made me feel like i was watching a tv show and the mutated dog shit made me feel like I was watching Scooby Doo. I will never get these 2 hours back and I will never watch this movie again but it’s nice to see what was going on back then. His dad crazy as fuck I hate that for him lol.

Can someone explain to me why we don’t like this movie? Besides a few things like the hulk dogs, and Eric Bana’s performance, Ang Lee is absolutely cooking here.

I don’t want to say this is misunderstood. Because I don’t think it is. But I do want to say it’s over-hated. It’s not a perfect movie by any means. But I’ve rewatched it enough to say that it’s not that bad man. I love seeing how trauma truly affects not only Bruce Banner but Hulk as well. They’re two completely different people that unfortunately share the same body. This movie understood how to separate the two of them and…

how could iron man and iron man 2 be so good and hulk so bad

Holy shit, score is… Incredible. Elfman cooked with this one, too bad he’s a creep. Ang Lee went nuts on this one and some of the nuts transitions actually work. A lot do not though, particularly when he basically just uses multicams which just does not work for a film. Really gives reality TV vibes. Now for the jolly green giant himself. He is so green. Which works for this since it’s already so ridiculous. But the Hulk model itself…

You think you can live with it? Take it. Take it ALL. looking back at this movie 23 years later with the progression, regression, and the evolution of comic book storytelling through movies, this movie is a rarity. It is closer to the Raimi Spiderman movies than they are to the comic book movies we get now. I say this due to getting a director with a vision. The influence of where comic book storytelling is at is further from…

Very much a movie of the time. Ironically though, it respects the source material more than any iteration after it. Big fan of danny elfman’s score even if it is a tad overplayed. I think this movie tries to do a little too much at once, the characters as a result feel like they are just bouncing around doing stuff, rather than a consistent tone or arc. The editing (while fun) doesn’t help this case. I like Eric Bana alot…

You know rewatching this 20+ years later it’s really not a bad movie. Hulk’s design was really well done, and Eric Bana did a decent job portraying Bruce Banner. another thing I loved about this movie was the transitions between scenes resembling a comic book page/panel. Hell, I even liked the not so subtle green/purple glow that continuously reminded me that I was watching a Hulk movie. haha. But boy that intro was way too much, felt like I was watching a movie before the movie and I wasn’t a big fan of Nick Noltes villain either.

crazy to think how we couldve had a different hulk. nothing is wrong with edward norton’s hulk – i just cant see it fitting in the mcu. nice phil dunphy cameo tho
