Wichtig. Grauenvoll. Niederschmetternd. Herausfordernd. Hoffentlich so hilfreich wie möglich. Unbewertbar.

20 DAYS IN MARIUPOL is a tough watch but vital for getting an honest account of the brutality of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Some truly haunting images, all told with visual urgency & melancholic voiceover from a brave but weary journalist putting himself on the front lines.

This was traumatizing to watch. So many shocking images that you can’t unsee. Much of these footage was reported in the news around the world at the time and some claimed it was fake. Indeed, it’s hard to think that these atrocities are real, but they are. Chernov says in voiceover that his brain desperately wants to forget what he’s seeing, but the camera won’t let him. We see it too. He didn’t just make a documentary, but a historical record with his life at extreme risk daily. As always, regardless of political or ideological thinking, those who end up paying with their lives in these conflicts are the innocent. Elderly people, pregnant women, children, babies. Houses, hospitals, everything bombed,…

AP journalists chronicle the first days of the Russian incursion into Ukraine. Harrowing footage of the fallout of Russian bombardments into civilians neighborhoods, fire departments, and hospitals. It’s incredibly harrowing to watch. Children and infants are among the many dead and wounded. And most that have survived (to this point) are left in despair — no home, and no way out. A must watch. SIFF 0223 2023 Ranked

📜 Documentaries 🏆 2023 Ranked “Film how these motherfuckers are killing civilians. Show this Putin bastard the eyes of this child and all these doctors who are crying. Rotting bastard. That’s how he ‘saves’ people. It’s good that there’s press here. Keep filming.” After reviewing Beyond Utopia yesterday, I decided to watch some more documentaries. First up was this. It’s equally important and a more difficult watch. Everyone who enjoyed Beyond Utopia should certainly see 20 Days in Mariupol as well. I remember seeing much of this AP footage when it became available in March 2022. It was the first real look most of us had into the worst of Russia’s crimes at the start of the invasion. I still…

You cannot explain to me a geopolitical policy that justifies this. There is no rationale, no logic, no reasoning of human governance that should allow for this. The minute you’ve bombed a child your history, your culture, your pride, your grievance don’t matter anymore. Your trauma doesn’t matter anymore, because trauma that inflicts more trauma is the path to mutual destruction. None of your reasons for bombing a child matter. My nation, the United States has bombed children. And many, many other nations have as well. A few are bombing children right now. One of them is Russia. And if children are being bombed, then we have to watch. We have to see. To witness it. Confront it. There is…

The most harrowing thing I have ever seen, ended up having to turn it off because I felt so ill, something that has never happened before to me. Truly depicts to the best of my comprehension the horror of war.

The saddest reality is that these people will be used as political pawns until the end of time. Victims of arbitrary borders in a conflict with no clear resolution. May the people of the Donbas find peace.

was told to watch prior to my theory of war class – didn’t know i was going to be sobbing for an hour and a half straight. but in all seriousness, this documentary truly demonstrates how disturbingly fast war can escalate. i’m going to ruminate on this one for a bit, research paper pending.

Great doc to watch if you want to ruin your day more effectively, did not appreciate watching a child die ngl but I’m sure nobody in the hospital room did either. Idk why I do this to myself.

To filter through so many hours of footage and still come up with a 90 minute documentary that feels neither too polished nor heavily edited is frankly incredible. That rawness is precisely what makes the footage feel real. People at a loss for words, shaky camera angles, and the very visible presence of the cameraman are all factors that ultimately make the documentary more effective. I don’t think I can call something like this enjoyable, but neither do I think all films should be judged by that standard. The journalistic value of 20 Days in Mariupol is most definitely its greatest strength.

I am traumatized, this documentary chilled me to the bone. Not just because of the brutal, raw footage, but also the excerpts from Russian propaganda media. I find myself asking: when will EVERYONE finally understand that this isn’t fake? That the one to blame is Russia, not Ukraine? That civilians are dying? When will we understand that war is an evil where innocent people suffer the most?

The sight of this little kitty, afraid and confined like many others in this small make-shift bunker was only a sad reminder of the utter sadness many of these little kitties and people have faced in Mariupol. How deeply harrowing it is to see the faces of these people and this kitty and wonder the terrible things they had to endure. – 00:08:50 – 00:12:56
