Action! – Spike The Power, Lee The Riot’ Arguably one of the most hysterical endings ever. Although, if you think about it, it fits in well with the melodramatic and sometimes almost PSA-like tone. As a romantic comedy directed by Spike Lee about an interracial love affair, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the romance is simply a plot device for the director to comment on the racism that still persists to a greater or lesser extent among interracial couples, especially those who still believe in and die for racial purity. Occasionally, this commentary can feel a little preachy, but Lee always strives to bring humour and truth to the situation. The performances from Wesley and Annabella are solid, not their…

It is always great when Spike Lee is unleashed and just moves around whatever is on his mind, and few of his movies do it quite like this one. Barely interest in narrative and the Jackson thread is allowed to completely overwhelm Sciorra’s plot because in a movie about upward mobility, the anxiety of going down remains the most haunting one. Also, probably the most honest Lee has ever been about his own mixed feelings about his Hollywood career. Ernest Dickerson’s finest hour and Spike’s best cast.

i find spike’s style incredibly fun and watchable (same with many of the performances he gets out of his cast) even when his writing is as messy and sometimes plain reductive/stupid as it can be here. i heard about the infamous final shot for years and somehow still had my face melted by it lol. best part honestly might be the music by stevie wonder

A great musical panorama about upward mobility and class anxiety that is probably still Lee’s most radical gambit of let its many disparate part just go as far as they can while still enlighten each other. Lee likes playing with ideas and the main relationship here is entire theoretical by design which can make the main narrative feel hollow until one accepts its just a strong throughline for Lee’s anxieties about his own position. Often embarrassing, pretty frank, full of swings, unexpected notes (McKee’s big speech) and good small observations (Snipes taking all his frustration at his brother’s junkie girlfriend instead of him). It is hold together by Lee’s use of music and the best group of performances he ever got (Turturro and Jackson in particular do career best work),

Random thoughts: * This seemed at first like it was going to be more consistently erotic, and there were moments where the camera enjoyed the sensual bodies on screen. But it delved into social and political drama sharply and quickly, which, while not surprising, was still not what I expected simply because of my perceptions of the hype around the film from back in the day (when I was far too young/ignorant to really understand anyway). (Come to think of it, I think the song contributed to that perception.) * Stacked cast. * I wonder how white actors must feel speaking racist dialogue in front of black directors. I suspect that white guilt can fuel a powerful performance in some…

basically, it wouldn’t have even been the kind of movie i would’ve seen until a few years ago, and instead… 😋 once again, i was surprised by how much i was captivated by this director’s work 🥸 among all the wonderful and talented cast, SLJ’s performance really stood out, carrying the subplot 🔥 the final scene was a cliffhanger, but i think i understood it and i think i managed to integrate it into the context 🥴 it’s more of a 3.75⭐, but for now i’ll leave it like that 🤓✌️

Number 25 in the month-long NYC movie marathon with my beloved is an entry from another quintessential New York director, Spike Lee. I was today years old when I saw Spike Lee’s sociopolitical opus Jungle Fever, but I was six the first time I was accused of having the titular malady. I had my first crush—my neighbor and schoolmate; a smart, amiable, beautiful boy who obliged me in playing ‘detective’ (I had a thing for Harriet the Spy) and never shunned me on the schoolyard. And he was Black, but so were most of the children in my school. I remember my friends jovially teasing me by singing the Stevie Wonder tune, not really knowing the cultural and political weight…

One of Spike Lee’s weakest when it comes to writing; flat, ordinary, and all over the place. His take on relationships defined by racial differences has aged like milk. Samuel L. Jackson still delivers one of his best performances, and Wesley Snipes is great too, specially when he’s bouncing off Spike. The story has its decent amount of drama and fun, but you can feel it’s always reaching for more than it actually gives. And that final shot… Straight-up lame, had me laughing out loud. Ranked: Spike Lee

🔥🌆🚫Everyone pays the Price – You got a big problem. You and her. The both of youse got the fever. – The what? – The fever. The both of youse got jungle fever. 👨🏿‍🤝‍👩🏻💔💉Yeah… It was quite uncomfortable to watch, and I don’t even know which was worse, the main storyline or the subplot about addiction, it was tough either way. But before I get into the movie itself, that ending? What was that even about? Um, one of the most “huh?” endings I’ve ever seen? As for the main plot, it’s brutal, realistic, emotionally devastating, and really gets the whole issue of racism across. While I was watching, it occurred to me that even if this story were set…

I’m just not a fan of the pacing, it drags a bit and I wish the ending was… more inspired. This takes things head on and its reality is bleak for everyone, there’s a lot to consider that doesn’t make you feel good, and I like that. The things I don’t like are more from a story telling and “wish more happened” perspective. I don’t think this uses its 2 hour run time wisely in terms of letting things unfold,…

The dude spent twenty years addicted to crack cocaine, finally got himself sorted out in rehab, only to be given a Spike Lee joint where he plays … a crack addict haha This was kindve all over the shop but I didn’t mind it too much, I’m aware however that I just love Spike Lee joints and most people will probably hate this

Solid Lee film with strong performances—Snipes and Jackson particularly—an ambitious racial examination that’s never diluted, and Dickerson’s reliably striking cinematography. There’s a genuine emotional weight to the film, aided by dialogue that often feels remarkably honest. The two parallel storylines—the interracial affair and Gator’s addiction—are powerful individually, but never fully coalesce, leaving the film feeling like two compelling stories competing for space. Working against it further is a score that feels misplaced and jarring at times, and the resulting bloat of a film that could’ve benefited from some tightening.

A jumbled mess of a movie that starts off with enough intrigue and plot structure, but falls apart a third of the way into it. There’s a variety of characters and storylines to follow, but none of them have any sort of resolution. The more I think about this film, the more unanswered questions I have. It seems like Spike Lee wanted to tell multiple stories and tried to smash them together into one film – the final product leaves…

Omg. The issue of interracial relationships continue today and I never thought that there was such an issue until now. I understood that there are hardships but the vividness of it in this film and the deeper issues demonstrate that racism still exists in relationships. Flipper Purify, there will be no penis between us! A hysterical, meandering, gorgeous, uneven, and complicated tragedy of the curious new world in which everyone is mixed up and nobody really belongs. Embora a narrativa principal parta de um envolvimento extraconjugal entre um homem negro e uma mulher branca, vejo Spike Lee constantemente questionando o lugar que a sociedade insiste em impor aos negros. Didn’t see this movie until later in life, after living in NYC and marrying a Swiss woman. These concepts in 1991 were still a hot button topic and I didn’t realize how much this movie talked about. Much more than just white and black relationships but so much more. Very eye opening. Definitely a building block to the legacy of spike Lee. Really enjoyed watching it but slight spoiler…. The ending isn’t a happy one. Not sad, but just…. Reality. Good film overall.

think it works best as a time capsule of these families and of the mood around colorism during the early 90s. it feels silly to call this film a romcom but that what it wants to be for those opening scenes which really made took away my enjoyment for the supporting cast and made everything feel so slow. initially. and it wrapped the film up nicely at the end when I much preferred it messy. but man the crackhouse scene, the police scene, sam jackson coming home at the end, when flipper’s wife debriefed blackness with her friends – all so so moving.

The best part of this movie is Stevie Wonders’ soundtrack. I really was hoping to love it, hearing only good things about the performances and the story, but unfortunately it just fell a bit flat for me. It’s really scattered in what it wants to be and what story it is trying to tell and that prevents it from truly being great. That final shot though, no matter how hyped up it was nothing prepared me for what it was going to be lmao. Also starts with some really wild street signs superimposed on top of shots of New York City. Interesting creative choices

That brotha was just messy. If you’re going to cheat, at least cheat with sense🤦🏾‍♂️😭 Solid plot at the start, brilliant cast and interesting themes but got a bit too melodramatic. Still adore Spike though.

There is a lot of really good stuff in here, but it fails to connect in the way Crooklyn and Do The Right Thing do. The Angie character feels underwritten and it’s weird that we spend more time with her ex-bf than her, even if he’s one of the lovelier parts of the movie (John Turturo is never bad). All the crackhead stuff is really intense to the point of being preachy and the last scene really soured me on the whole movie.

idk why I liked this so much, but I found this to be a very effective movie in what it sets out to achieve. samuel l. jackson’s performance as gator is phenomenal, his subplot was heartbreaking and genuinely had me fucked up. the acting can be a bit choppy, but the writing canceled it out. very messy structure wise as spike introduces so many characters, but the characters themselves are interesting and fleshed out enough with their own ideas that…

An exceptional, meandering narrative–something that Spike Lee is so good at–that covers the dynamic between fantasy and anxiety, in an interesting way, by centering on the further complicating elements of family. There is so much drama going on, though, that it’s a bit difficult to follow the thread. Spike Lee has been clearer, and he has hit harder, but what makes this stand-out is the terrific direction and the visual cohesion. This is incredibly polished and the performances are impeccable.

Honestly, Spike Lee might be my favorite director ever, his shots feel so intentional and the plot is always raw. In my heart I can not give a movie that involves cheating more than 4 stars because it deeply upsets me. The other 0.5 is for the ending because that threw the entire movie for me. I do not understand, him and his wife that he cheated on have sex and then next scene he’s talking to his child daughter…

This 1990s American drama, directed by Spike Lee, follows Flipper, a married Black architect played by Wesley Snipes, who begins an affair with Angie, his white secretary, played by Annabella Sciorra. This is an excellent film, supported by a strong cast that includes Samuel L. Jackson, Halle Berry, Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, and Anthony Quinn. It explores significant themes such as racism, interracial relationships and drug addiction. Overall, this is another outstanding film from Spike Lee, complemented by an equally…

This felt like one of Spike’s weakest films. It’s exploring a lot of ideas and perspectives quite messily and his writing as regards to interracial relationships are reductive and definitely dated. Spines gives a fine performance, though Samuel Jackson is a force! Incredible performance on his part alongside Ruby Dee. Their final scene together was absolutely devastating. Complete tonal shift for the film, in bringing the background story crashing into the center fold in a powerful conclusion. Though for the…

This is in some ways Do the Right Thing’s unfocused little brother as its interrogating racial conflicts between African American and Italian American communities. Here, the Italian Americans, themselves an often racialized and stereotypized community, come of somewhat cartoonish at times though. Jungle Fever is at its most interesting when it’s interrogating the public reaction to the central affair. It touches on a lot of topics that I am not the right person to comment on about. I do think…

I started to watch all of Spike’s movies last year, but so few of them are available streaming that I’m just sort of catching them when and where I can. Anyway, this one starts so strong! The family stuff (both families) is so good, and there are some killer performances, speeches, fuck-around scenes, Dickerson cinematography, and bold music choices. But it’s just all over the place and ultimately the romantic relationships don’t ring true at all.

Spike Lee always reminds me that I need to be more ashamed of my Italian American heritage. The irony of being racist immigrants is wild but that’s colonization for ya. This was an interesting film that tackled a ton of themes that I didn’t know it would be getting into. I loved the soundtrack and the cast was perfect. My only issue was the ending felt a little anticlimactic for a few of the characters plotlines.

interesting time piece on early 90s new york and the conversations around race that were happening. i really liked how all the scenes of a group of characters talking about rave and their different perceptions about how it affects their relationships and opportunities. both lead characters had something missing in their lives whether it be excitement or building towards something. the ending was tragic and really captured what women endured in the past as they often had to take back their husbands despite infidelity and all the pain

What a wild ride. uh I didnt know italians were so racist in the 1990s. It was very fun to see all of these actors when they were super young. ‘Oh that’s the guy from severance’ and ‘oh samuel L jackson looks so young here’. Just reminds me of For Free by Kendrick Lamar tbh. There were unintentionally funny bits like the Italians yearning for Rudy Giuliani. I think my two biggest issues is how quick the main characters ‘fall in love’ and the audio mixing kept going from whispering to loud racist screaming all the time. I feel like Spike Lee is punking me.

overly written, redundancy all throughout the script, and one of those films that absolutely feel personal for its creator to the point of projection—i.e., Spike’s own class disposition (and the fear of racialized class immobility), arguably to its detriment. but there’s an air of righteous honesty & earnest self-criticism that i find both admirable and endearing to the point that many of my criticisms feel neutralized. however, that final shot, my goodness, is so laughably bad. like we genuinely laughed out…

Perhaps the boldest and most earnest Spike Lee joint up to this point in his career, Jungle Fever is a loud and proud dive into the bigotry surrounding interracial love. It uses 2+ hour runtime to hit nearly every corner of this topic, and then some, an effort that it’s hard not to be a little taken by in the end. Lee’s sex scenes are often scintillating and romantic, but nowhere is that attitude more necessary than in Jungle Fever.…

Spike Lee’s Jungle Fever forces its audience to look directly into societal dysfunctions. It is a stunning, raw cinematic achievement that bravely interrogates the destructive impact of media-driven sexual myths, systemic racism, and the crack epidemic across the segregated neighborhoods of New York City. The heart of my fascination lies in how Lee deconstructs interracial desire versus genuine love. When Flipper and Angie cross racial lines, it is a dangerous dance with stereotypes and fetishization. I love how the dialogue…

“Jungle Fever” is Spike Lee’s term for unhealthy sexual attraction between the races – for relationships based on stereotypes. Too often, he believes, when blacks and whites go to bed with one another, they are motivated, not by love or affection, but by media-based myths about the sexual allure of the other race. Lee has explained this belief in countless interviews, and yet it remains the murkiest element in his new film, which is brilliant when it examines the people…
