Would’ve loved to see Karl Urban channel a bit of Butcher energy and go a few more rounds with Bruce Willis. The whole thing is completely absurd but completely fun. One of those underrated Willis films that reminds you just how entertaining he can be.

I remember liking this ‘enough’ when I first saw it in theaters and I found a fancy slip-cased DVD in one of my wife’s storage boxes the other day so we decided to give it another go. I remember now why it didn’t make the cut for our movie shelves. So the joke is that they are old…but they also great at killing people! Oh, and there is a love interest…that gets kidnapped and thinks the person she was flirting with on the phone is actually a serial killer! Ha! These jokes get played over and over and over again. If you like guns firing, there is a lot of that happening in parts of this movie, so that’s cool 😒. Maybe I just wasn’t in the mood for this type of crowd pleaser, with its lame music and rib poking ‘see…funny, right?!?!’ attitude. It just kind of infuriated me.

Logan Roy, Billy Butcher, Osbourne Cox and HELEN MIRREN carried this nonsense.

A badass film for senior citizens. Red is a hard hitting action comedy with an ensemble of Hollywood veterans that could still deliver. The plot may not be crimson red, but the action sequences are enjoyable and well choreographed to an extent. The wit is sufficient but not corny, and they’re in sync with the cheeky dialoque. The editing is stylish and the pacing is quick enough. Helen Mirren rules the sequences she’s in; so does another terrific performance from John Malkovich. Bruce Willis and Mary Louise Parker has chemistry, damn it. My only code red are the transitions which failed to bring a storyflow cohesion. But all in all, Red is a wise choice of a Netflix pick.

RED is just fine. The action is uninspired and the humour isn’t particularly funny, but the final act is fun enough. There’s probably an argument to be made about the glamourisation of CIA operatives (our lovable hero literally “toppled governments”) but honestly RED is too shallow for this to matter. The film makes no sense and is filled with silly plot logistics. The early 2010s feels like a generation ago, with big films like this being so much smaller in scale and so filled with terrible music. The best thing in RED is the great cast, though it must be said that John Malkovich steals the show and has the most fun. However ultimately all that RED shows is that even older actors can be the leads in generic, bland action movies. 2010 Ranked Marvel & DC Ranked

I’ve recently made it my mission to rewatch a bunch of stuff from my pre-letterboxed era that I know I’ve seen but never actually logged on here, and at this point I don’t really know why I’m doing this to myself. Kind of incredible to think these actors were already in their geriatric cash-in phase in 2010, might even be fun to hang out with them if the action were actually good. Somehow still on the higher end of the Robert Schwentke catalog.

Schwentke thought that his full-star cast would replace the necessity of character development and the creation of convincingly exciting events. False. Well, there are a couple of exceptions: – Helen Mirren firing a machine gun bigger than her while wearing a white dress and still looking fine. – John Malkovich, simply because he is John Malkovich. Everything he does is freaking awesome. In this case, he plays a delusional old man that was subject for 11 years to heavy LSD doses for governmental purposes. I approve enthusiastically. The film’s biggest flaw is that it never determined whether if it wanted to be a comedic action/thriller or a DC adaptation, so it attempted to be both intermittently, ending up being a seriously uneven and uninteresting film. The ending ranks as one of the most ridiculous and unfunny of the decade. 51/100

So this movie is pretty okay and was a little bit better than I thought it would be. RED is a late 80s style action film of the hard PG 13 variety. The exceptional cast turns what seems like a 2 star screenplay into a 3 star film. VERDICT: Perfectly fine movie to watch while doing stuff.

Starring: My Name is Morgan Freeman I haven’t seen this movie since its release, and I remember thinking it was alright. I believe I may have even fallen asleep during most of the third act. Definitely forgot Freeman was in this, and I can’t blame myself as his role here is pretty unremarkable, pretty much a glorified cameo. The film as a whole is fine. It definitely tries to be cool, and it seems like everyone is having fun from Willis still showing he cares about acting (it helps he wasn’t probably sick), Helen Mirren machine gunning a bunch of SAs (?) and Malkovich being Malkovich. This is heightened by a very upbeat, at times quirky, score and some energetic…

A humorous, breezy action-comedy, RED relies heavily on the chemistry of the cast of veteran actors, such as Bruce Willis, Mirren, Morgan Freeman, and Brian Cox, which gives the movie its charm. John Malkovich is also hilarious, playing the wildly paranoid assassin Marvin Boggs with a manic edge. I also appreciate that the movie doesn’t take itself too seriously, leaning into ironic, lighthearted humor about aging operatives rather than portraying them as overly gritty or realistic; the over-the-top shootouts and…

Favorite movie. Favorite actors. Favorite plot. I would say; “No one is retired until proven otherwise…” I recently read the latest information about Bruce Willis’ health and decided to watch a movie with him in his honor. Bruce Willis is GREAT!!!

This was not good. The story was predictable, the soundtrack sounded like it came straight from a royalty free beats website and it felt like the intended audience was sad old people who wanted to be cool again.

depressingly awful, so deficient it’s not even worth inspiring hatred of. i liked the explosions. misanthropic, betrays a complete lack of regard for the human body, but lacks the conviction to lean into it. deeply misogynistic too in ways i was startled by. i watched half of this when i was 10. what does a 10 year old get out of this? it’s so boring even by 10 year old standards. http://www.bfi.org.uk/sight-and-sound/greatest-films-all-time/all-voters/robert-schwentke

RT rates this movie 72% fresh, I agree. RED (Retired Extremely Dangerous) agents are adjusting to retirement when someone gives the order to eliminate them. This really makes them mad, so they set out to solve the mystery of what happened and why. Bruce Willis is able to flex his action hero and comedy muscles in this one, and together with Morgan Freeman and John Malkovich, put on a good show. This is a great option if you’re looking for a light action show to spend an evening in. I like it.

so…another christmas movie i see. little bit overkill on shooting the house perhaps? is it true romance or is he a serial killer? only time will tell! morgan freeman plays a disturbingly good old perv. yes of course i identified them, here’s a parcel with all their fingers. getting out of the car mid spin is only possibly if you’re bruce willis. something tells me john malkovich isn’t acting in this role. i am getting the pig!!!! igor being alive…

This movie is striking a wild tone. The jokes are understated, but the action is way over the top. Definitely kept me on my toes, but I think it worked. Bruce Willis exiting the moving car upright and firing a gun is perfection.

Had a lot of fun. Still not my thing Red has a good engaging premise that is much better than the actual story. Retired CIA operatives who were at one point amongst the most dangerous people on earth are suddenly assassination targets. The hook is immediate. All these old characters have a chip on their shoulder to prove they still have what it takes. The movie doesn’t do enough with that premise. Instead of developing a clever espionage story it…

I watched this today with my grandfather, a special recommendation. Going into this movie desiring a cool action film with typical Bruce Willis-isms, I am comfortable with saying I got just that. The action in this movie, IMO, is very good. Willis is a straight-up badass with how he ‘takes care’ of inexperienced CIA operatives, teaming up with fellow old partners to show how ass-kicking is really done. Karl Urban does an amazing job at making us dislike the antagonist,…

K
3 stars feels a bit generous for this, it’s not particularly sharp or funny, and the action isn’t really good so a 2.5 may be more apt but that also feels too harsh. I had enough fun with this to justify the 3 for now. The cast is all really strong, with Willis, Mirren, Freeman and Malkovich turning in reliably solid performances, Cox has a good supporting turn too. Parker runs away with the first half of the movie to be honest. The story is convoluted but the premise is novel enough to keep the film buoyant. Very fine. Along the 2.5/3 border.

I have such a low tolerance for movies like this where the big action scenes have zero intelligence or thought involved. The few split seconds where this works is when it is Karl Urban vs Bruce Willis and both are highly competent. But a big chunk of the movie is when Bruce Willis takes the vice president of the USA hostage by winning a gunfight with 1,400 secret service agents, hijacks the VP’s limo, and outsmarts everyone else – no thought involved, just from firing guns at people and a series of insane deus ex machinas.

-
S
I like the idea of old, retired CIA operatives coming in and kicking ass, especially with this star studded cast. But it can’t be ignored that little was there to develop any type of characterization or compelling plot. Felt like RED was going by quickly and not taking its time to develop much meat on the bone, just going from scene to scene as fast as they could. Therefore, I couldn’t really touch on what identity RED was trying to…

Essentially an “old crew still got it” type of film. Wished it was more fun than it’s premise. Why was that romance with Bruce Willis and Mary-Louise Parker’s characters so forced and underdeveloped? Karl Urban was pretty fun to see though.

This score is mainly for watching it with family which was fun and it’s sporadically fun and funny with its all star cast but it’s too damn Red Boxy in its filmmaking for it to stay with me in a nice way at all. When it gets out of its own way it’s okay but there’s a lot of mumbling but it rarely gets out of its own way for long enough to truly get comfortable. Fun but disappointingly disposable especially considering the cast.

A very fun action film with a very interesting cast. Bruce Willis is pretty great in this as the lead. The whole cast is just pretty fun. The action sequences are all well done and as per usual when he’s in it, Karl Urban is probably the best thing about this film. He’s a great character and has some really cool fight scenes. Overall it’s just a very enjoyable film and I’m looking forward to the sequel.

I liked this movie a lot. When it came out, my parents put it on too many times. Has been a while since I’ve watched it. The beginning, the kidnapping, the pig, Victoria (!!!) & Ivan, Marvin, Joe, Henry, Cooper, and Frank. There are some parts that were a little drawn out and slow, but when it’s good it’s good.

It tries to balance high camp comedy with slick espionage action, and it works at times, but sadly often…

RED is a stylish, funny, and surprisingly entertaining action-comedy. The biggest strength is the cast—Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, John Malkovich, and Morgan Freeman have fantastic chemistry and clearly look like they’re having fun. The action is energetic, the humor lands more often than not, and Malkovich steals several scenes. The story is fairly straightforward, but the charismatic cast and entertaining action make it an enjoyable ride.

It was billed as being comedic and thrilling. It wasn’t either. Loads of famous names include Richard Dreyfus and Brian Cox. There was lots of actions sequences, nothing that I hadn’t seen before and a pretty predictable plot.
