Johnny Cash is a jackass and an arsehole towards his first wife. But doggone it, Phoenix really nailed it down well, even to Cash’s mannerisms, and Witherspoon was pretty captivating at times. Did you know that Phoenix and Witherspoon performed all of the songs themselves? They also played the auto harp and guitar themselves, too. That’s impressive. Since the story focused heavily on Cash’s rough side, I can see how this will be unlikeable to certain viewers. If you can get past its character flaws and focus on its strong central performance, you’ll find it entertaining. This is a solid music biopic and because of the music genre (country) the appeal and connection will certainly vary from person to person. I love both I Walk the Line and Ring of Fire songs.

There’s a scene in this where Johnny, revved up out of his mind on pills, excitedly tells his disinterested parents about writing a letter to that folk singer Bob Dylan on an airplane and receiving a response in the mail. Twenty years later, the promise of the Extended Music Cinematic Universe would be fulfilled when the same director depicted the writing of this letter and its response in “A Complete Unknown.”

While there are a ton of simplifications to the story, this is probably one of the most well-done music biopics (that take the traditional route) that I’ve seen. The performances by Phoenix and Witherspoon are fantastic, and the movie wouldn’t be the same without them.

As far as musical biopics go this is the peak. For the most part I cannot stand this genre, but the raw story of Johnny Cash makes this great. Phoenix and Weatherspoon are unbelievable in their roles. Hard to say but JP may be the goat at transforming into these troubled intense roles. Even so, he’s somehow outshined by Reese in my opinion. Johnny certainly knew how to be a rockstar that’s for sure, pop a few pills and ruin…

Also watched this one yesterday and man Johnny cash is so cool. I really liked the performances and how they incorporated the songs throughout the movie. I love Johnny cash and really like how they structured the movie. I still would’ve liked to have heard hurt because to me that’s one of my most favorite songs because you can hear the pain in his voice. But nevertheless was a great movie that I enjoyed

Wow was not expecting to like this as much as I do. Helps that I didn’t know much about Johnny Cash’s life beforehand. Joaquin Phoenix has definitely cemented himself in my top 3 favorite actors and while I haven’t seen many Reese Witherspoon movies, her performance was just as good if not better. 🔥

FREEZE FRAME ENDING?! Reese Witherspoon is really is great in this, Oscar deserved. The music performance sections of this movie are really great, especially the Folsom one, but they should have let him play the whole song. That scene was electric and I think the best performance by Phoenix the whole movie and they just like fade it out way too early. It was still a fun movie, but if Martin Scorsese made it to might be one of my favorite movies. The Johnny Cash story is a perfect one for Marty to write. Anyway 👍🏻

Can’t believe this. Basically the whole thing is beat for beat ripped off from Walk Hard. Even the bathroom sink thing.

This movie always hits a little too close to home and never fails to make me so emotional. But I suppose that’s why I love it.

“You can’t help nobody if you can’t tell them the right story.” Another one I watched a bunch in the 00s and I just love it. Joaquin and Reese really transformed into Johnny and June for this and without them this could’ve ended up another empty music biopic. I do love this genre though. Except when we have to watch awkward moments, sometimes fabricated, of the artists coming up with their popular songs. This is a classic, deserving of all its accolades and awards for sure. Love it. 354/500 movies & tv for 2026

my stream of consciousness upon my rewatch: I’ve loved this movie since I was 15. seen it more times then I can count. the recording studio scene where he sings folsom prison blues remains one of my favorites movie scenes ever. “well I didn’t have it then, bill” is something my mom and I quote to one another to this day. and finally: because you’re mine….I walk the line #johnnycash4everrr

first time watching a biopic where I didn’t know a damn thing before watching. pretty epic. Joaquin Phoenix just has it. It felt like he completely believed he was Johnny Cash while filming. also also also felt like the movie took place on just the same stage and same room decorated slightly differently in each scene. but fuck yea I walk the line
-
Y
Now this is a good movie. Certainly certainly one of the better biopics ….. ….. but man ….. ….. Dewey Cox blew this shit to smithereens. It’s absolutely impossible to rewatch without hearing Dewey. So funny.

Not only a great biopic, but a great romance. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon both operating on Oscar levels here to Bring Johnny and June to life. Can’t believe how good their vocals were. I knew Johnny Cash was flawed but I never knew much more than that. This answered a lot of questions I had about such an influential artist. Amazing

welp, it’s good and i like Mangold, so i can say that i like it for now. Witherspoon has finally appeared in a place where i appreciate her, and Phoenix always steals the show. yet this film lacks something. i can’t quite figure out what it is. maybe it’s the way the stage performances are shot like a stage performance, but throughout the film i just felt like i was being thrown through the same ringer over and over. i…

I loved this movie in 2005. It got me into Johnny Cash, so I’ll always have a soft spot for it. Witherspoon elevates the hell out of her scenes both on and off the stage. Phoenix’s singing is pretty good, but the performance overall wears worse now that I’m familiar with more of his work. The movie’s credulousness makes a pretty good case against both the biopic and the autobiography, or at least biopics based on autobiographies. Mangold oversimplifies the…

Watching after reading his autobiography, and as a lifelong fan of Johnny Cash, I liked it in both a casual viewer and a fan of his work. Despite the differences changed for cinematic effect as pertaining to some events of John’s life, I enjoyed it.

Shout-out To cash también, la gente cambia X2, pero cuelnero ereas y cuelnero serás Shout-out to Joaquín Phoenix que bendita actuación.

When I was but a wee little Ghostie, growing up I must have watched this film hundreds and hundreds of times. Cocaine Blue was my favourite song for a long long time. Watching it again now it’s shocking how little of this movie not involving Reese Witherspoon. She is truly breathtaking as June Carter. Really talking about anything else is doing her a disservice here. The performances are fantastic, especially Jackson & Cocaine Blues. Joaquin Phoenix is alright overall, he doesn’t…

I always enjoy a biopic but each time I watch one, I get deja vu. They always follow the same formula with some aspect mildly tweaked. The only thing that differentiates them for me is the music but besides that many of them just feel like I’m watching the same movie again just with different actors. Same beats, character dynamics, and the same amount of unrealistic, movie made moments.

Second watch, but it’s even better. The story is so raw and honest that youre can’t help but feel for everything theyre going through. After having watched two others about famous singers – both of whom got too far in and died cause of it – it’s almost strange to watch one with that doesnt end tragically. Seriously tho, wherever theyre finding these people to act the roles of the singers, it’s the right spot. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon nailed it!

This felt like a Johnny Cash hit piece. Just made him look like a terrible, annoying person. It was hard for me to buy Joaquin Phoenix as Cash compared to other actors’ portrayals of musicians. Most of the time, all I could see was Phoenix. Props to him though for singing the songs himself, he sounded great.

I was born a year before this movie came out and its took me 21 years to find out it existed. I was looking for biopics for metal artists when I stumbled onto walk the line. Been a cash fan since call me Kevin would join comedy night servers and sing ring of fire. I never really knew anything about his life but holy shit. I know it was probably very exaggerated but even to have a slight glimpse into…
-

my favourite part was when johnny was proposing on stage for the fifth time and it’s clearly supposed to be a very emotionally intense moment but the background musicians just keep plucking the same honky tonk tune. nothing breaks their laser focused concentration on plucking the same three notes in succession over and over.

made me hate and love Johnny Cash so I say it’s good acting and a great movie
-
B
As far as biopics go, this one hits a lot of the marks. Great performances, a coherent story that doesnt just follow someone’s life, something that really feels like a film even though it’s based on someone’s life.
-
S
Well holy shit. Never bopped my head as much during a musicians biopic.

“i was keeping my feathers numbered for just such an emergency“ turns out joaquin phoenix is a good singer atleast as junk junk johnny cash he is, he could of done better in joker 2 then‼️ ring of fire could have been done better. ask her to marry you a hundred times until she finally says fine.

This movie nailed it! It was so well done in my opinion, giving enough background but also taking us through the process. I love a bio pic that does that. The chemical between the actors really made the movie. It made me emotional in a good way but also made me so upset for his first wife.
-
K
This is objectively good. Subjectively, I will never watch this again because I can’t watch movies where people are sad and on drugs. You might think, well what movie did you think you were watching and to that I’d respond that I know nothing about Johnny Cash but I should have predicted this. I thought Johnny Cash was about 5’7″ and as a result thought Joaquin Phoenix was too tall and therefore an unbelievable Johnny Cash. But I looked it…

I enjoyed rewatching this more than I thought I would. I absolutely love the opening setup to the Folsom Prison show. I think this is a better movie if they figured out away to bookend it with that actual performance. It looks like you’re going to a funeral. Maybe I am.

I wish they would have shown the time Johnny Cash got arrested for picking flowers in Starkville. Wanted to give this a watch since James Mangold directed A Complete Unknown, and it was really cool to hear John talk about Bob Dylan. I guess Mangold was really obsessed with that airport note Cash wrote to Dylan. This feels a lot more depressing than Mangold’s later attempt at a music bio pic. But, that makes a lot of sense for Johnny…

Yeah I loved the hell out of this Well this was fucking beautiful. I fear I need to listen to Johnny Cash now Joaquin Phoenix was SO good in this Johnny and June have been on my mind ever since. “It might be nice to start playing acoustic guitar and be thought of as a singer and a songwriter, rather than a ‘grunge rocker’ … I could sit down on a chair and play acoustic guitar like Johnny Cash…

just a bit repetitive, especially when over 2 and a half hours for the extended version. also the ending was a bit weird and sudden

#Best actresses: my favorite performances. . Me faz rir, me faz pensar nas dinâmicas familiares e o que elas representam.

Although I haven’t seen many, this was the best biopic I have watched. Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon played Cash and Carter so well. They truly make you believe like they are them. He is an artist I’ve began listening to more and more and I feel like this was the perfect time for me to see this…

I already saw this movie but, since it was a while back and since it was available on Disney+, I thought I might as well check it out again. To be honest, if there is one musical genre with which I don’t feel any connection whatsoever, it would be definitely Country music. Still, even though I didn’t like the genre, Johnny Cash was a very intriguing man and he had made some pretty bad*ss songs. The fact that I didn’t…
