KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! Nowhere near as tense or memorable as his previous entry, director Kazuki Omori leans more into the silly and campy with this new version of the King Ghidorah storyline, which exchanges aliens for time travel, androids, and the future with a still silly-looking Ghidorah—that is, until we get Iron Ghidorah, which was cool. Loving this meaner and more violent Goji, something as small as having him get to fully open his mouth and we see his teeth and all, paired with the sound design, makes this new Goji more terrifying, and he does come across as a real menace. Everything with him was nice. The rest of the human story was fine, I guess, but not that truly gripping, nor did it work as well as in the past films. The best thing about watching an entire series of films is that eventually Stockholm syndrome sets in as my expectations reach a baseline as my appreciation for the individual entries grows. Now, watching a new Godzilla film doesn’t have to be the be all end all, and the faults that tend to crop up (Boring humans, the same monster baddies, not enough Godzilla action) flatten out because I’ve followed the series throughout its development in a compressed amount of time. The elements of each picture that are different flourish more than the parts that are the same – and those similar parts are a lot less prevalent than I remember because memory has a tendency of viewing things out of…

The final act of this film kicks ass. The fights between the two monsters are weighty and provide a great spectacle. The city destruction is awesome and the introduction of Mecha Ghidorah is just brilliant. Based on this, this is an awesome Godzilla movie. However, before that you have some bad stuff. I am willing to forgive, to an extent, the utterly nonsensical sci-fi premise that underpins the film. It isn’t that it doesn’t make sense if you think about it (though this is also true), it doesn’t even make sense when they are explaining it and when it is happening. This is Godzilla meets A Sound of Thunder, meets Terminator 2, meets the android from Aliens (with one scene…

extremely layered and thematically complex, with great fights, wonderful effects and completely outlandish pulp sci-fi that cribs from multiple sources but still manages to homogenize it into its own evaluation of the godzilla mythology. arguably the first kaiju movie to have more interesting things on its mind than “uhhhhh nukes and humans r bad”, the pacing here is so breathless and nuanced that i find something new every time i watch this. the only godzilla movie where he plays both the hero and the villain, monsters in this are seen as humanity’s self-induced apocalypse through both arrogance and humility. introspective about godzilla’s role as a pop culture icon, this seems to tell us that the 21st century’s fate depends on our willingness to interrogate the past and earnestly acknowledge that no-one is innocent, and that victimhood is not a prerequisite for virtue.

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 32 of 46 What? That we’re being invaded by little green men from outer space? Let’s just keep it as our secret. You can tell your son about it when he’s born, Major Spielberg. – U.S. Ship Commander So, apparently Godzilla vs. Biollante didn’t go over well with the kiddies and, as a result, didn’t bring in as much money as Toho had hoped. So they decided to revert to the Saturday morning cartoon style of the later Shōwa entries. There’s moments in this where I almost thought I was watching one of the Godzilla films from the 60s. There was also some speculation that Godzilla vs. Biollante underperformed because it was competing with Back to…

Oh, so that’s where Jurassic Park was inspired by from the first 30 minutes of this. Also, if Steven Spielberg’s father is in this, Does that means his son is confirmed as a Godzilla fan?

Cool, though the Heisei Era stuff always looks weird to me. And who knew the bad guys would turn out to be the Night at the Roxbury boys from the 23rd Century? The boy gives it 1000 stars. The girl gives it 1021 stars (though she only watched the last half hour).

A Walk Amongst Monsters #64 “You can tell your son about it when he’s born, Major Spielberg.” R.I.P. Kazuki Omori. He was an intricate part in bringing the Heisei era to life, directing both this and Godzilla vs. Biollante and writing Godzilla vs. Mothra and Godzilla vs. Destroyah. His importance to this franchise is undeniable and he will be missed. Talk about a wacky film. It’s a time travel film that has Godzilla fighting in WWII and a Terminator ripoff. Wacky doesn’t begin to cover it. So don’t focus to much on how the time travel works or you’ll open up a massive can of questions and plot holes. It doesn’t matter, they’re going back in time to remove Godzilla…

“Take that, you dinosaur!” Toho wanted to find their family audience (and their money) again as the goopfest of Godzilla vs Biollante wasn’t kid (or box office) friendly at all. And so we have our favorite alien Ghidorah back for mayhem… with a badass Mecha Ghidora introduced to us as well. Well, neither are enough to save this one. This one is chock full of saturday morning cartoon performances and an almost competely incoherent time travel storyline (think Tetsuo: The Iron Man crossed with the basic idea of T2) that isn’t exciting and is barely interesting enough until that Monster Mash final act. I really needed that last twenty minutes to be the entire film because I didn’t give one…

Gojira tai Kingu Gidora, after the previous two films’ financial disappointment, decides to have the most famous kaijū face off against his most famous foe once again. Returning director Kazuki Ōmori leaves behind the high pretentions of the preceeding Gojira tai Biorante and instead proposes a pulpy mixture of Terminator 2, time travel movies and even a return to Godzilla’s more ridiculous past, while still trying to hold up some of the seriousness the “Heisei series” had turned into a…

This is the 18th Godzilla movie, and finally time travel has arrived. Harry Potter, The Sandlot, and Cinderella are just a few of the franchises that jumped the gun and introduced time travel into the series in just the third film. That’s a little early, if you ask me. Time Travel was clearly the solution to the puzzle: we want to have King Ghidorah in this movie but if he’s just brought here by aliens who want to conquer Earth,…

“You can tell your son about it when he’s born, MAJOR SPIELBERG.” God this movie rocks. Maybe the most hype moments and aura entry in the franchise but man it is hype as hell. Re-ranking the whole series by the strength of each movies human plotlines. A sci-fi author has uncovered Godzilla’s origin: in 1944 a dinosaur (a rare species called a Godzillasaurus) protected a group of Japanese soldiers from Americans who later tested a nuke on the same spot. Not long after making this discovery a UFO lands in Tokyo. But instead of aliens, it’s piloted by time travelers. They’ve come to warn the present that Godzilla will render Japan a nuclear wasteland.…

Oh and it was going so well… I actually cannot believe that they just made a Showa Era film again. Another stupid god damn ‘aliens control a monster to destroy Godzilla and the earth’ film, except this time they also throw in the most nonsensical time travel plot you’ve ever seen for good measure. This movie rules. Every scene is crazier than the last. The moment where MechaGhidorah appears is one of the hardest fist-pumps in cinema. Both Godzilla and Ghidorah are such tragic figures here, too, with both of them being mutated, abused, exploited, and thrust into a proxy war they didn’t ask for.

He’s even bigger than he was before! You know I’m enjoying myself if I find myself humming the movie’s soundtrack along with it. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah is a wonderfully fun movie that stays true to the dichotomy of Godzilla’s character while delivering some legitimately powerful moments. Much is said about the ridiculous time travel plot, but I think it’s in service of a meaningful overarching theme. With the human race as it is, the presence of Godzilla is inevitable.…

I believe the characterization of Godzilla is at its strongest when he’s a mutated dinosaur. Which is why I’m not surprised as to why this and Minus One are my favorite Godzilla origin stories. It affirms the message of “We’re the authors of our own destruction”, which I’ve continually held dear when it comes to Goji flicks. 91’s Godzilla vs King Ghidorah takes that approach and hammers it into the heart of the story. Pre-mutated Godzilla was already an intelligent…

I’m sorry but this movie is fucking stupid. “David its a godzilla movie, not Casablanca” I know, but even on the curve that this movie revolves around big lizard destroying stuff, it was realllllyyyyy dumb. The time travel genuinely makes 0 sense. And I don’t mean that in a nitpicky ‘when you think about it’ way – As they’re explaining it, it directly contradicts itself. It LITERALLY makes 0 sense. *I am remembering this months after the fact* Ok so humans…

C
After Godzilla vs. Biollante managed to be both complex and cohesive, this failed follow-up tries too hard to be complicated, turning into some kind of Godzilla origin story and bringing together so many elements at once that it only becomes chaotic and confusing, with empty characters and a terrible script full of plot holes.

😉 You can tell your son about it when he’s born, Major Spielberg. You know this is a good movie because one scene is set in the “Super Scientific Play Room”. Protagonists have a startlingly limited perspective on the applications of time travel, but so do the writers. Not a coincidence that the 23rd century invaders seeking to destroy Japan are white. Very rude of them to build a balding robot. Where did they find these weebs? Really silly Godzilla…

The first King Ghidorah attack was badass. It’s hard to root for Godzilla in this one honestly because his design is weaker than usual (he’s constantly doing the Denver face but way less cute) and Ghidorah looks fucking sick. This generally flops between some dated but awesome effects and some of the worst composites I’ve ever seen. There are also lots of boring bits with not a whole lot going on. Shindo’s death was sort of epic. What the hell…

I liked the movie because for better or for worse, after watching it, I was hit with so many questions and had to spend a lot of time thinking about the events of the film. I actually enjoy the humans a lot in this one, the story showing off Godzillas origin and how the soldiers had a respect for it was not what i was expecting.

King Ghidorah has never been my favorite Godzilla baddie but he’s real fun to watch in this one and the mecha design has always been cool to me. Watching this with friends was fun and has gave us some great moments (bless you Johnzilla) but overall it’s definitely one of the weaker zilla films, especially in the banger-after-banger Heisei Era. Love how this movie has all the zany ridiculousness of a Showa Goji film with the production value of a Hesei entry, definitely makes it feel unique among it’s slightly more grounded (This is the same universe where a scientists dead daughter combined with Godzilla cells to become a giant flower monster so I do not mean grounded in a “Nolan Batman” kind of way) family of films. yoshio tsuchiya puts in such a good performance for this film that does not deserve it, he has a scene with godzilla that is way too fucking good for the Most Nationalistic Godzilla Film (although i could see an anti nationalistic reading, i doubt that was intended and it’d be a bit of a stretch i think) also featuring meek boston irish terminator. at least mecha-king ghidorah looks fucking badass and the effects are pretty solid.

Countdown to Minus Zero | 18/30 “We cannot heal your wounds and we cannot take you to safety.” Although we trade in the dark and brooding tone of the last two entries for a more bombastic sci-fi romp, the movie still has a surprisingly somber story at its core. The dark, serious, grounded tones are mostly gone. We get time travel that retcons every movie before this. Emmy driving Mecha King Ghidorah has a Power Rangers vibe. The monster battles are better. The poster kicks ass. Godzilla vs King Ghidorah is one of the most fun entries in the franchise, introducing numerous sci-fi elements such as time travel, teleportation, and androids.
