Alright Letterboxd, we have some things to discuss. Bear with me. Let’s get this out of the way first: Christopher Nolan is a very talented filmmaker. He and his brother have crafted several masterpieces in my eyes, and I have nothing but the utmost respect for his commitment to high(er) concept crowd pleasers. He gets a lot of shit, but his type of filmmaking is desperately needed in an age of mindless entertainment; how many other directors will garner such universal support from the studio, critics, film buffs, and casual moviegoers alike? Yeah, not many. Unfortunately, Dunkirk is one of the blander films he’s made. Nolan’s hired guys like Hoyte van Hoytema and Hans Zimmer to help conceal the script’s…

this movie STRESSED me the FUCK out I was on edge 80% of the time, if it weren’t for Harry styles making me go “lmao that’s Harry styles” to diffuse the tension every ten minutes, I would’ve popped a fucking blood vessel so thank you, harry styles.

You never see the Germans. Nearly every 70mm frame of Christopher Nolan’s monumental new film is lodged in the heart of the heart of World War II — ticking down the seconds as the Nazis tighten the noose around 400,000 Allied troops who are stranded on the beaches of Dunkirk — but you never see the Germans. Their submarines lurk invisibly beneath the waters offshore, their planes swoop in the distance overhead, and their foot soldiers remain off-camera as they amass on the other side of the dunes and wait for the order to attack. On the rare occasions when the Axis fighters make themselves known (as they do in the haunted and startling prologue), their bullets whistle towards us…

Really dont know what to say about this movie but nothing in it was special at all The cinematography was ok but it was not nolans best level No memorable or iconic scenes at all Dont feel like there is a main character Just a bunch of soldiers fleeing home Most interesting character was tom hardy who had less than 10 lines in the movie Some good shots with lots of tense moments but thats it

Watched this a long time ago and just noticed this was still unreviewed Dunkirk isnt a good War Movie imo, but it is a good drama and thriller. It uses the setting of war to really push a feeling of tension and suspense. i still dont understand why Tom Hardy not throw himself out of the plane seat. Bro really went down with it and casually surrendered to enemy like a fool not nolan’s best but it was alright. People…

I really like war movies. They portray the hell of war so well. I can’t imagine what it would’ve been like to be a soldier in the war. The traumas would kill me. – The whole movie I was guessing if that one guy was actually Harry Styles or not. I was thinking there’s no way Harry styles can act. I guess he can. – Overall very great movie J.

Nolan’s best film that ive seen even though none of the charecters that much depth but the events are more important even though Harry styles being in there was a bit weird. The cinematic shots are amazing with the two soldiers trying to escape is really gripping and the best part is when all of the plotlines come together and generally the whole movie is amazing

Just rewatched this after 8 years, i was a kid so i didn’t appreciate this masterpiece the way it should be. Yet, i still remember knowing i watched something special. Watching it today i can say there is no flaw in this movie. The deafening bombs and the sound of the dive bomber’s planes to the utter silence in the subsequent frame, this movie is the closest thing there is to getting a feel of living in the war.

– Personally I’m biased because I love any World War 2 / historical movie despite not totally loving the action genre… + it’s Christopher Nolan so of course it’s going to be a great watch At first, I was a bit confused with the chronology of it, but after understanding(through a yt vid lolol) it was sooo cool to see it play out Spoiler- the only disappointing part for me is that since I’m not a huge fan of Barry Keoghan, I wasn’t really affected by his death if it were anyone else, I would have totally cried ngl
-
A
Saw this in theatres when I was 11. I understood it better this time.

J
Some truly anxiety-inducing moments, but despite the grandiosity of certain moments, I don’t think the film successfully captures the true scale of what happened. Like, they talk about Churchill getting more than 300,000 soldiers back, but it honestly seems like 3,000 made more sense given what we see. And same for when the boats show up. It’s an emotional moment that isn’t quite sold visually. Anyway. Small complaint. The film is really effective, even if its timeline is maybe too cutesy for its own good.

This is one of my two least favourite Nolan films, which shouldn’t be taken as any disparagement against this impressive cinematic achievement. It’s just that I enjoy the narrative depth I’m accustomed to in these Syncopy features more than a comparatively simple documentation of survival, intense and awe-inspiring as it may be. It’s a stressful little film. Note: please read my first sentence over the course of a week, my second over the course of a day, and my third over the course of an hour.

“He’s shell-shocked, George. He’s not himself. He might never be himself again.” I’m sorry but Nolan’s refusal of using CGI kind of holds this movie back a lot for me. For example the scene of the boats arriving. How are 400.000 men that happy to see a total sum of 12 boats arriving. Or them literally telling us there are 400.000 soldiers on that beach and then showing us about 2000 soldiers. It just doesn’t make any sense. And also…

“Seeing home doesn’t help us get there, Captain.”

P
I love Nolan’s use of practical effects but got a movie like this it doesn’t really work. Dynamo was a massive operation, almost 80 destroyers and hundreds of planes. You simply can’t get to that level without using CGI, which again, Nolan doesn’t do. Besides that the movie isn’t very memorable. Not a bad movie by any stretch, but not the best thing ever.

The background music matches the movie very well. The fact the movie doesn’t have much speech throughout makes it more realistic and more unique. It’s a good movie and it is Nolan. I have to say it doesn’t compare to some of his better projects but it is still very good. I do like all the perspectives of the different soldiers, and the different parts they play. I also like how they filmed the air force pilots and the camera angles they used.

The tense atmosphere in Dunkirk was conveyed incredibly well. The atmosphere, the few dialogues and above all the situations ensure that you have this feeling of danger and uncertainty all the time. I found it particularly strong that the opponent is often not shown directly and you still feel the threat constantly. This is exactly why the film is even more intense and oppressive. A film that generates its tension not through great explanations, but above all through atmosphere.

I watched this movie again. What an extraordinary cinematic and storytelling depiction of the heroism at Dunkirk. Nolan powerfully conveys the anxiety and desperation of the soldiers waiting on the beaches, while honoring the courage of the civilian sailors who crossed the English Channel in their small boats to help rescue the trapped British and Allied forces.
-
C

Dunkirk is one of Nolan’s most immersive films. The tension rarely lets up, and the sound design and cinematography are phenomenal. While I wasn’t always emotionally connected to the characters, I was invested for most of the runtime. The ending really brought everything together and left a strong impression. A gripping war film that absolutely sticks the landing.
-
F
Still phenomenal. Some have quibbles about how Nolan conveys the scale of the situation that I can understand, but watching this again I can’t help but get completely swept up in the harrowing and ultimately miraculous story that unfolds. Of all his movies, Dunkirk hits me the hardest.

A very beautiful movie with an amazing score and amazing cinematography (it’s Chris Nolan). Although characters lack development and depth, the story is still great, I’ve always loved Nolan’s timeline placements, acting is good, plane action is good, and it builds tension as the movie goes. Weaker Nolan film but still beautiful and the ending is great. Solid 8/10

“What do you see?” “Home.” It’s been years since I last saw this and I greatly under-appreciated it at the time. Nolan takes “cinema as an experience” to a whole new level. A forerunner to both TENET and The Odyssey. A movie set in a “twilight world;” an unstable dream where reality itself seems to be the antagonist. The world and actions of those in it seem to tick towards an inevitable future, as we witness the events of what’s to come—but “it’s not an excuse to do nothing.” An incredibly daring film. Not sure how we’ve come to overlook it in Nolan’s filmography.

Standing ovation for the barber of Dunkirk
-
B
In finishing up my Nolan rewatches Dunkirk is in a really interesting spot in his filmography. It’s a very drastic juxtaposition versus his other films of the 2010s/20s that all (maybe not Tenet) have some very deep emotional character drama going on beneath the setpieces and action. Instead most of our characters here are pretty steadfast and static and the real character is the war itself. Also noticably much shorter (by like an hour) versus his other features which does…

Dunkirk is one of those movies where you don’t need a lot of dialogue to feel the tension. The atmosphere, sound design, cinematography, and Hans Zimmer’s score make the whole experience feel incredibly intense. I loved how Christopher Nolan focuses more on survival and fear rather than making it a typical war movie. It’s not an emotional drama in the usual sense, but it still leaves an impact.
-
F
When i was watching it, I felt the silence and hopelessness from the very beginning. I Felt all the terror ,the way the characters are trapped, and surrounded by this constant danger, and thr simply Theresa was no way out. The film creates incredible claustrophobic atmosphere, keeps you in and the tension was perfect. The cast was also great. Hans Zimmers music builds up the atmosphere, every scene felt even more intense. honestly don’t know what else to say. Dunkirk is a beautifullx claustrophobic And atmospheric film that pulls you from begging.

An Immersive Oceanic Masterpiece Where Unnamed Soldiers and Pure Tension Shine. 2017 (5.0) Even without their names ever being spoken, every single character can be felt vividly alive. Capturing that distance from Dunkirk to Britain—short as it may seem—it feels like an Interstellar on the sea. The music, the composition, everything evokes Interstellar. Even when covered in military uniforms and dust, the desperate, yearning desire to return home radiating through their performances shines brilliantly. Directed by Christopher Nolan, the 2017…
