GODZILLA VS HEDORAH is often labelled “The Silly One”, but it’s just as serious and committed as Honda’s original, updated to reflect the era of its creation. Environmental collapse replaces nuclear annihilation and Honda’s grim documentary approach is switched out with some freewheeling 70s style: Groovy pop songs decrying the destruction of the earth, playful animated sequences about the murder of innocents, and nervy fourth-wall-breaking tricks that underline the story’s consequences: Like when the screen’s colours explode to life when some teens start to party on Mount Fuji, but ghostly figures watch them silently, as the teens ignorant actions lead them to a terrible fate. The wide narrative net Honda cast is absent and in its place is a focus…

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 24 of 46 Godzilla vs. Hedorah is that movie where the franchise zigs instead of zags. Godzilla, who was once a metaphor for the destructive power of the atomic bomb, ends up fighting Hedorah, a metaphor for the dangers of pollution. It’s a much darker film than anything the franchise has turned out since the original, bordering on outright horror at times. And yet, it still has moments of goofiness that shine through, like rays of sunlight penetrating thick, choking smog. It’s also one of the more stylized Godzilla films, replete with psychedelic imagery, eccentric editing and animated sequences. It’s fairly safe to say that opinions are pretty mixed on this one. In a review for…

Probably the only Godzilla movie I’ve seen where the final smackdown is the LEAST interesting part of the picture. That’s because up to that point director Yoshimitsu Banno uses a plastic filmmaking style that’s dynamic and exciting, with everything from animated interludes to onscreen poetry, whacked-out dream sequences, and a montage of man-on-the-street interviews that inexplicably includes footage of multiple babies trapped in sludge and laughing cartoon skulls (http://www.bigassmessage.com/5eea1 ). The overall effect is difficult to describe without sounding incoherent and/or insane, so let me just say that this beats any episode of Captain Planet yet produced.

Substitutes the original’s nuclear holocaust fears for pollution and environmental ones with a giant sludge tadpole born of sewage viciously mutilating half of Japan while the population is distracted by the pastel colors and psychedelic grooviness of 60s consumerism that has repackaged very real threats (like environmental destruction or, uh, giant monsters) as goofy things you watch on TV or hear in a song. Some of the wildest imagery and brutal destruction of the franchise (including on-screen acidic sludge melting of civilians???) all in service of Godzilla telling us to stop all the littering. Might be my favorite Godzilla sequel tbh. Full discussion on ep 242 of my podcast SLEAZOIDS.

Mystical, fragmented, and chaotic, with absurd, whirling images unique to the franchise. Many of these components would usually be a negative for me in a monster film unless they effectively maintained the primary issue at hand, which they clearly achieved. A Godzilla film that is distinct in that it focuses on the environmental consequences. So strange, with many bizarre choices, I mean, it’s completely ridiculous, but I kinda loved it? What a film!

psychedelic 1970s japan jazz fusion skeletons evil monsters huffing smog pollution angers godzilla, it makes him sad rotting grandfather clock melting in a polluted ocean…. godzilla disembowels the smog monster and then stomps his corpse into dust. then he looks at the pollution, releases a deep scream, and walks away into the sunset

Godzilla: “hey hedorah, get over here and fight me, you ugly ass hunk of sludge” Hedorah: “but no! I am merely a manifestation of mankind’s neglect for the planet!” Godzilla: “me too bitch! come over here and fight me!” *cut to swinging hippie soundtrack battle music* Clearly one of the best Godzilla movies.

The atomic bomb. The hydrogen bomb. Cast their fallout into the sea. Poison gases, sludge. Everyone throws them into the sea. Even sewage. Godzilla would really get angry if he saw this. He would do something about it. Hype moments and aura AND themes, wow! This goes as hard as its been hyped up. 70s disco and hippie culture distracts the people from the excess waste and spend of capitalistic endeavours. The result? A monster is born, and Godzilla has…

Great Goji Marathon 2026 #12 A personal favorite of mine growing up. The golden age of the Showa era kicks off with a bang. This movie is brimming with so much life it’s insane. The message is beat over your head and I love how dire Hedorah’s poisoning of Japan feels. Godzilla and Hedorah are so emotive here I love it. So much weirdness to love here. The final battle might go on a bit to long but like everything…

After watching the film I considered to be likely the worst in the franchise, this movie was an incredible return to form. Its editing style is electric. From animated sequences, to black and white jump cuts to color, and trippy psychedelic visuals this film truly has it all. Hedorah is such a cool monster and also brings back the core of what Godzilla used to be, a commentary on fatal flaws in humanity. He also kills the hell out of…

While I enjoy Hedorah and the message behind the film, I found it kind of hard to get through. I think it had some really cool elements, like the tadpoles merging and continuing to grow, as well as the evolutions of Hedorah. I like the metaphor and the message. It even had some cool shots to go along with it, like the clock floating through the sludge at the end. I just think it looks better on paper than actually played out on camera. I enjoy it but not in a rush to rewatch it.

“There’s no place else to go and pretty soon we’ll all be dead, so forget it! Enjoy yourself! Let’s sing and dance while we can! The most wonderfully bizarre Godzilla film of all time. It really teeters between the colourful Saturday morning cartoon toned superhero adventure and a shockingly morbid, dark & dangerous, acid laced hallucination… and damn, does it get somehow get the job done! Godzilla vs. Hedorah is really unlike anything else in the series (or in existence). It holds its fist proudly in the air with anger and protest against the powers that harm the environment, shaping them into a hideous amorphous nightmare…

Tokyo Drifting through space and sludge, the alien lifeform Hedorah arrives to our obnoxious, polluted, disco 70s world. In a sense, like Godzilla, it is a man-made monster, one born of poison gas and sewerage. Human irresponsibility has created prime conditions for Hedorah’s arrival on Earth. Hedorah is also a natural enemy of Godzilla, as it pollutes his territory, leading to an imminent battle. I just love Hedorah’s design and the artsy inflections in the making of this kaiju film.…

Godzilla wasn’t happy with all the fucking pollution. The villain was hitting those toxic fumes, but Godzilla was like “Not in my neighborhood!” But the goon jumped Godzilla before tossed the mother fucker killing some corrupt business men (I’m guessing). esse é provavelmente o filme mais insano da era showa, e isso é um elogio.

Chaotic and weird, with psychadelic sequences dispersed between Kaiju fights and far more closeups on the victims of the disaster, this is a really unique film in the franchise, and I’m disappointed that the heads at Toho didn’t like Banno’s vision, because the film’s message comes across incredibly clearly, while being a great Godzilla film in its own right. The battles still manage to boggle my mind, I have no idea how they accomplished some of the choreography because Hedorah…

I can’t explain why but I’m addicted to Godzilla movies. There is something so transfixing about so many different bizarre interpretations of the character there are. Each one feels like a Twilight Zone episode where the twist is always Godzilla coming out of the water. This is one of the weirdest of them too. It changes tone so quickly and so often I don’t even know what it was going for. The whole movie is a mess in an entertaining way. It’s a trippy 70s movie that happens to be about Godzilla. Like what do you mean Godzilla used his breath to fly?

Quite a good, very unique film and entry in the Godzilla franchise. It contains bizzare abstract imagery, a great environmental message and brings the franchise back to darker storytelling after a few more-lighthearted movies. The film isn’t afraid to depict pollution in its rawest form, and I think that’s simply wonderful. It includes imagery of floating trash and dead fish to expose the horrors of real world pollution. Another thing that’s great about this film is actually showing the victims…

These movies really benefit from different directors coming in and playing in the Godzilla Sandbox. This feels like the most dire and consequential threat since Godzilla first appeared in 1954. The film itself is shot with such a fresh style too. These movies tend to do a good job of showing you something new with each subsequent sequel, but whenever a new director comes in, it gives the series a jolt. They feel hunger to be making a monster movie.…

This is definitely one of the more interesting monsters/kaiju, instead of radioactivity being its origin, it uses sludge and pollution caused by humans to enlarge and empower itself. It even feasts on the smog as a food source. Very aware of the times.

What a treat. Remarkable I hadn’t remembered the sauce here, this is the kind of movie I would have loved when I was younger. The cinematography here by Yoichi Manoda is largely unmatched to this day. Nightmarish psychedelic audiovisual scape paired with some of the wackiest sequences in the franchise. Do not miss this free magic mushroom just because it’s an ‘old Godzilla movie’

Yeah, this fucking rips. Definitely the best in the series so far, still not the best, sadly. As great of a character as Hedorah is, with the sick ass design/abilities, and as great as the visuals are, the fight scene at around the one hour mark is just way too dull to ignore, it goes on for what feels like 10 minutes, and did absolutely nothing for me (other than bore). Part sea beast, part flying saucer, part lovecraftian shambling mass of volcanic sludge. Hedorah is one of Toho’s strangest creations a cyclopian toxic avenger who beguiles his way through a psychedelic fever dream of a picture. Animated interludes are always welcome as these titans battle out I find an otherworldly sense of wonder at Hedorah a true oddball of the kaiju cannon.

Im not gonna lie it’s truly a wacky movie but there is a lot of stuff in here that I like! For one, giving Hedorah the pollution plot point is great! Such a fun, psychedelic watch, with biting critiques of consumerism and refusal to acknowledge real world issues! However, I feel as if it falls flat in acknowledging that pollution is a societal issue, and that we can not overcome it until the world changes. It briefly dabbles in the idea, but doesn’t go much further. Still, a great watch!
-

This was great and did a lot of super fun and surprising scenes that just add to the wacky nature of Godzilla. The first act is a bit of a slog, but once you get into the sloppy editing and silly dub work, you’re already starting to see some rubber suit action which is where this film shines. no sé qué coño hago con mi puta vida. me encontré un edit to guapo en reels de instagram con varios planos psicodélicos que parecían de tarantino. y bua aunque sean pocos me voy a inspirar bastante. las actuaciones son malísimas, el doblaje aún peor, pero los efectos especiales para ser más mayores que mi padre ole sus cojones. hedorah está demasiado chetado, mis cojones que primero es una nada y luego un ovni que contamina todo. ah y la escena donde se ponen a bailar después de que sus familiares mueran con dos cojones.

The music is so good. One of the best Togo Godzilla movies I’ve seen. Watched in rehab
-
Z
Easily the most visually appealing so far due to creative segues between scenes, psychedelic visuals interlaced with dramatic moments and even very time appropriate animation sequences. The music was very time-appropriate and added to the authenticity of the world. I was very happy to see there was way more on-screen Kaiju battling with just the right amount of human interaction. The message was simple yet effective leaving there to be more screentime for everything to keep moving along. I know there’s a suspension of disbelief to these movies but I was absolutely not prepared for Godzilla to turn himself into a jet.

Arthouse Godzilla, defender of mother nature. The hippie hero. Far out. Released at the height of a pollution crisis in Japan, Yoshimitsu Banno was granted very liberal control over the production of this film, and what results is one of the best entries in the Showa era. Godzilla cleans up the human’s mess for once as opposed to the other way around. Hedorah isn’t really the villian. He’s a byproduct of human neglect. Banno turned the franchise into a psychedelic…

“I guess you aren’t ready for that yet. But your kids are gonna love it.” the tone is all over the place but the visuals are so unique for a godzilla film

Godzilla vs. Hedorah is one of the best later era Showa entries in the Godzilla franchise. A huge batch of pollution is turned into a monster called Hedorah, who is seemingly impossible to kill, with Godzilla putting up a massive struggle. What I like most about this movie is the visuals as well as the human cast. This is one of the stronger human casts in a Godzilla film because they come up with the main way of killing Hedoriah,…

A tremendously weird and enormously fun Godzilla movie. I hadn’t seen this one since I was a kid, so the fact that I got to watch it in a theater surrounded by Godzilla fans that applauded furiously everytime Godzilla showed up was an absolute treat.

Easily up there for a top tier early Godzilla movie. I think Godzilla does best either depicted as a terrifying incarnation of destruction or as a silly lil guy. Loved when Godzilla fried the balls then went 💅

The abject horror of this film…The lingering shots of dead bodies, injured animals and babies stuck in sludge. disgusting trash & pollution that seems impossible to stop, the pacing and everything else about it make it feel like you’re witnessing a nightmare. This is my first Godzilla experience (that i can remember, im pretty sure my dad showed me godzilla vs mothra as a kid but idk) and while some of the battle sequences do come across as cheesy, in this…

Third screening @ Kaiju Go! at the Texas Theatre! I’m of two minds about Yoshimitsu Banno’s most (in?)famous work. It is wonderfully, aggressively weird in its presentation (registered to me as Tsukamoto-esque (Tetsuo II specifically) at times, but that might just be my limited “weird director” experience speaking), and most of the time I actually really enjoy this. I’m a big fan of the ecological message, the multiple groovy musical numbers (Save the Earth got stuck in my head leading up…

Godzilla hasn’t done through this much shit since Godzilla vs. Mothra.

“If Godzilla saw this he’d be so mad.” That’s a sentence to live by. Love the weirdness and the messaging of this movie. Drags on places but the movie makes up for it. Watched at Kaiju Go!

This was trippy as all hell man

Kooky and abstract, super fun vibes. Unfortunately the worst part is the final battle, pacing wise it’s terrible and kinda sucks the life out of the movie lol. Definitely worth watching though.

Fourth Kaijugo! film… I was definitely in the theater for it and liked what I saw, but I cannot swear to being conscious or awake the entire runtime LOL

coolest movie ive seen in a minute…super psychedelic. easily a new favourite. hedorah vapes and godzilla flies. loved when hedorah zoned out for a full minute before exploding into sparks and flying away. p.s. ideal function is the mount fuji party pre-monster appearance.

This has so much charm and the acid rock soundtrack and psychedelic visuals go so hard. The animated sequences were so cool. Peak camp. The satire of 1970s hippy culture was really funny and effective. The score is great, I wish we heard even more of it. The monster battles were sometimes boring in this one is my only gripe. Hedorah is such a cool design tho. I love the way they lit the scenes with all the smog and glowing…

Visually the most interesting godzilla movie ever put to screen, cutting from cute animated scenes to psychedelic dance scenes to goofy camera angles to horrifying shots of people dissolving. It’s a weird blend of everything that somehow works and thrives.
- Synopsis
- An ever evolving alien life-form arrives on a comet from the Dark Gaseous Nebula and proceeds to consume pollution. Spewing mists of sulfuric acid and corrosive sludge, neither humanity nor Godzilla may be able to defeat this toxic menace.
