“kobayashi… we beat godzilla for you.” Five months after the original, and we’re already here. Godzilla looks around like he’s just some guy in a rubber suit. Wait, where was I supposed to go? And where’d those tiny tanks go? The thing is, lights off in the studio, the city’s blacked out – soothing the Big Guy’s PTSD-driven rage. The best moment arrives soon after, with silent footage from the original Gojira – no score, just flickering scenes of stark destruction, tearing through miniatures. Devastating and sacred. Once again, it opens this vast space – an emotional arc from childlike wonder to existential gravity, an echo of national trauma and moral reckoning for the ages. But Godzilla Raids Again doesn’t…

It doesn’t hold a candle to the original. I know. STILL This bastard quickie step-child of the GODZILLA franchise is packed with great miniature action, has enough weird quirks to make it memorable (Fast action Godzilla!) and is like every other generic entry that would follow. If anything, it’s setting down the template, but doing it in a trim 81 minutes. The anger spewed against it seems to be from people who can’t believe it followed up the classic. BUT The middle section of the film is Godzilla getting into a great fight with Anguirus! Plus, I love to watch giant monsters fight in black and white.

the big guy’s first versus. Godzilla’s fight with Anguirus is pretty amusing since there isn’t much overcranking, which really just makes it look like two angry cosplayers. otherwise the suit-mation and miniature work are as good as the original’s even if there’s significantly less of it. this also doesn’t have nearly the psychic weight, either. my favorite part was Takashi Shimura showing some government officials a bunch of footage of the Tokyo attack from the first film, which is just out-of-context clips from the movie but without sound. pretty exciting.

Godzilla returns but can’t find his subtext and gets into a heated argument with his buddy Anguirus so humans teach him how to chill.

KAIJULY: GOJI RAAWRS! Goji and that Anguirus were seriously beating the living crap out of each other, LMAO. More or less what I and many probably expected from the first Godzilla. Heavier in action both by the human and Godzilla. The thought-provoking commentary from the first one is nowhere near to be found. It’s all sheer entertainment and embraces some of the silliness I am guessing moving on and during an era in specific it will lean heavily more into. Now, that may sound like a detriment but as for what it is and intends to do, it succeeds with a few moments of suspense and tension. There’s also a good dose of humor provided by the human actors, but…

Shoutout to my boy Angurius, you’ll get your time in the Sun. (Hopefully) Massive respect to this movie for being the catalyst of the monster vs. monster sub genre, but every time G-Man and Angurius met, it was abundantly apparently the crew had no idea how they should actually fight. Instead, it just kind of looks like two fish flopping around most of the time.

Anguirus looked disgusting–nipples protruding–in his spiked shell battling Godzilla before Congress. Very very disrespectful. I’d heard that this was a significant dip from the cinema-altering highs of Godzilla, a film for completionist Godzillords only. Well if that’s true then that kicks ass. Because this was a perfectly fun movie. It’s certainly paced like a movie from the mid-50s, a time when people didn’t travel through space as quickly as we do now. But so what? You ever seen a normal movie from 1955? They don’t exact need a seatbelt. If it only gets better from here on out then buddy, I’m in heaven. I loved the battle between Godzilla and Anguirus in the middle of the film that was slightly sped…

Godzilla and Friends Marathon: 2 of 46 This hastily produced sequel lacks the thematic weight of the original. Released a scant six months after Gojira, Godzilla Raids Again, or Gojira no Gyakushū (Godzilla’s Counterattack), represents a major step down in quality. However, it also marks Goji’s entry into the Kaiju Wrestling Federation. The series leaves behind the dark and heavy tone of the first film in favour of an endless series of monster on monster smackdowns. It’s like watching WWE wrestling but with guys in rubber monster suits slamming each other into miniature buildings. And, while that’s fun in its own way, this film suffers because it doesn’t fully commit to one thing or the other. It starts to shift…

Ahhh, Its a shell of its orignal film and a hollow one at that. It sheds all the thought and deeper meaning of the orignal, its just an action film, a bad one, 30 mins of this movie is shooting missles at a mountain.

Our second entry I like that this movie doesn’t focus as much (still kinda does) with personal dynamics that took away from why we are all here in the first place: to see Godzilla destroy shit. I do think that the fight with Anguirus was sick even though they’re a pretty forgettable 怪獣 (🤓) Song I recommend for this entry: Leave the world behind by meat computer

Godzilla Raids Again might just be one of the most dissapointing follow ups to a monster movie I have ever seen. Only beaten out by Godzilla vs. Kong from 2021 and Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster from 1964. I first want to prefface this with the fact that I do actually somewhat enjoy the film on in it’s own. It’s issues only compile once it is looked at as the sequel to one of the greatest monster films ever made. The…

What a colossal step down from the original. I do admire the miniature cityscape they built for Godzilla and Anguirus to destroy, but the new suit for the titular monster was awful. It allowed for more movement, but looked silly, especially during the sped-up fight scenes. Overall, it feels like a mistake to have rushed production after putting so much effort into Godzilla, because the story, setting, and craftsmanship of this film simply don’t hold up.

Godzilla has one move, a front face lock, and it’s weak as hell! He’s throwing limp punches that are rarely landing. His only good offense is when he can get Anguirus down, and even then he’s doing little more than slapping. Wins in heel fashion even though he’s a babyface and retains. Anguirus is a hell of a worker! An incredibly scrappy, wiry heel. Clawing and biting with fury and rage, all the while trying to sell Godzillas dogshit offense…

Lwk this movie is a big downgrade in a lot of ways to the original. With angirus being the “main antagonist” against Godzilla he really just gets defeated in like a couple minutes while being hyped up a lot. Also the kobayashi death was sad but I think that part was actually done well. Godzilla and angirus fight was cool just sucked they didn’t so early in the movie

Easy sequel that abandons its most interesting idea way too early and somehow finds an unconvincing way out of a situation the original spends most of its runtime contemplating. Despite that I love how scrappy the fighting is and the special effects are still so impressive. Poor Anguirus man, motherfucker gets brutalised and eviscerated. There’s also a hilarious moment where Godzilla is being watched on his island refuge and he’s just fucking standing there staring at nothing.

Godzilla raids again is in many ways a quick cashgrab sequel, and many others it’s a damn fun kaiju movie. A second godzilla, a couple pilots, some ladies and a just silly plan. It does well purely on fun performances and seeing the king of monsters back. It lacks all the sauce that makes the original a certified classic and doesnt have the heart or the careful hand and imagery, but its snappy, its fun and it brings Anguirus getting…

Even the theme song of this movie takes what made the original Godzilla great and turns it into a predictable, almost soulless, fast and cheap, but functional enough rendition of itself.

I had a great time with this film. The Godzilla fights were fun, the miniatures were laughably bad, the human storyline was well done, and it all came together in a solid package. I don’t see why this entry is so poorly regarded.

P
the novelty & spectacle of the fight is all this really has but its also goofier than it realizes it is so i was having a good time until the weird wind-down in the last third. doesnt even reheat the firsts nachos as much as it just hands you the empty plate you ate them on. it helps that everything about anguirus is really charming

Human stuff in this one is really boring, godzilla has cool fight scenes but its not enough to save this. This is also 15 minutes shorter than the prior one and this feels so much longer.

Hilarious that after the opening sequence they basically reuse 10 minutes of the first film to establish the background. The fight in Osaka is really fun, especially with the bits of Osaka Castle, and I am really excited to watch more of these 50s/60s/70s Godzilla vs. ____ movies. Super fun to just watch two people in elaborate costumes crash around these awesome micro sets. Human plot was VERY boring, to the point where I almost dozed off once or twice…

He shows up, he does the smashy smashy, they stop him, the end. It’s like, why would you watch this movie?? Hey, do you wanna watch Godzilla but it’s boring and without any of the interesting themes and the effects and music are way worse and it’s less creative?? We’ll you’re in luck.

“Não se perca por uma fantasia, volte para casa!”. O filme foi obviamente feito pelo dinheiro, não é muito difícil enxergar isso, tanto que nem tem uma boa explicação para a volta do Godzilla, que havia sido morto no filme passado. Os personagens são bem medíocres e a trama humana mais ainda. Porem, mesmo com todas essas qualidades negativas, a luta do Godzilla contra Anguirus é inegavelmente íncrivel! A tensão que o filme cria sobre a luta dos dois é…

Human plot fell off a bit. I love anguirus so much and the fights I thought were quite funny and goofy so it was still entertaining

An absolute mess of a film. It’s a well-told story that Raids Again was rushed into production following the massive success of the original Godzilla, and boy oh boy is that reflected in the final product. The main cast might as well not be human beings given how little personality any of them have, and even the respective performances are a giant step down from Godzilla. The music is just kind of there, which is a shame because the big…

I gotta say, I do like the facelift of the modern American Godzilla, but the original suit has a charm to it. Movie is fine. Reads very similar to the first one, except the last 10 minutes are just them shooting missiles into the mountainside. Got boring. Though I am always open to effective scenes in old movies. There’s a scene where there’s a city-wide blackout, and everything goes dead quiet. You can really feel the weight of that moment.…

Yeah this is decent. The characters are likable enough but most of the subtext from the previous film is stripped away for “giant monster does giant monster things, and the heroes that stop him” Which isn’t a terrible premise, but man are the monster fights and the plan to stop Godzilla are GOOFY! I feel so bad for the guy in the Anguirus suit. Who ever had the idea to make Godzilla’s first Kaiju battle be with a four legged…

Month of Foreign Films Entry #11 Check out the list here: boxd.it/TVmQo I don’t care what the film says, you can’t convince me this is the same universe as Godzilla! This feels like MCU slop well before MCU slop was a thing. What happened behind the screens to cause one of the biggest fall offs in quality of all time. This films sucks. But also yes I will include this on rewatches, sometimes I just want to watch two guys in costumes smack the shit out of each other. Monster verse ranking: boxd.it/TWCJg

Stuff happens: the movie Not bad but man there’s nothing super exciting happening here. Kinda crazy how fast they go from a work of art to this. It’s not even super cheesy it just drags The random goon subplot is really silly and then they just all die

This movie is fascinating to me. It’s bad in a way that doesn’t just become indefinable sludge. It kills its second monster half way through, and then until 20 minutes later, it completely forgets its a Godzilla movie to focus on human characters that aren’t even particularly interesting. It brings out one of the most important characters from the first movie for 5 minutes to explain that Japan is fucked and there’s nothing they can do. It’s finale is the…

A sluggish nonsensical sequel. What a disappointment to follow up the incredible first film. I don’t even think this is a fun bad watch. It’s almost annoyingly boring and dumb. This was the introduction to Kaiju on Kaiju fights. I’m surprised it stuck because the fight is not great. The first 30 ish minutes are fairly engaging. Good setup with the human cast. The first scene with Godzilla is pretty solid too. Then they just completely lose the plot. Using…

Immediately notice the change of directors. This is so much less flat, stage-theater-y; it’s more dynamic and from a grounded (but not stationary) pov. Also they have my FAVORITE DINOSAUR HERE?? ANKYLOSAURUS IS HERE?? … and they (almost) got all their facts completely wrong. 1. Akylosaurus was an order of magnitude smaller than they state 2. They are not agile, they are extremely slow-moving. 3. Their brain is where it’s supposed to be?? Not spread throughout the thorax?? 4. Very…

These guys had to watch a recap of Godzilla destroying their city from the exact same scenes of the previous film. But I’ll give it respect for this being the first vs movie in the series. The good in this is Godzilla vs Anguirus cause it’s pretty amusing to watch.

(Spies and Kaiju Marathon: Part 8 of 78) (2019 Criterion Showa Collection Blu-Ray) I really wasn’t sure what to expect going into Godzilla Raids Again; a part of me was hoping it wouldn’t be as bad as people kept saying it is, but ultimately, I was left feeling not angry but… just kind of confused and ultimately pretty disappointed. The best way I can describe Raids Again would be that Toho was trying to recapture what made the 1954 movie…

❌ SPOILERS ❌ Esse filme aqui é onde começa a merda.

Wow what a step down from the original gojira, it lacks any of the nuance of that first film. The suit looks worse than the first film at least in my opinion and the human characters aren’t as good as the movies first with only one cast member from the original returning and he’s only in one scene from what I recall as for anguirus I thought he was a cool addition to the Godzilla franchise and this was actually…

They somehow turned Godzilla from the harbinger of death into a mild inconvenience. At every point in this movie they seemingly go out of their way to make him not scary. I personally dont really have a problem with the usage of suits, but they speed up the fighting as if Buster Keaton is about to walk in at any second. Also the human stories are very uninteresting and there is no real grief or any sort of care that I have for the very few deaths that happened. The planes were cool but thats about it for me.

I watched this without subtitles and I think I enjoyed more than I would have with subtitles.

Raids Again is very underrated and been beyond simplified. It’s reputation being dumbed down to the major introduction of kaiju showdowns and more specifically the type of film that defined Godzilla. It has a lot more to say than that. While Godzilla original film represented the nuclear bomb this film represents knowing about it and having to deal with it. It’s interesting and engaging seeing our characters know of the inevitable and trying to figure how to deal with it.…
-
P
As anyone will tell you, this doesn’t hold a candle to the original since it doesn’t have the emotional weight of people losing their loved ones and homes and the possible threat of another mega weapon that humanity can use against each other. However it’s still fun. Seeing the two kaiju duke it out is very entertaining and is a small preview of what’s to come for Godzilla. The human story isn’t as emotionally impactful either but will definitely make you go “Aww that sucks.”

Criterion Challenge 2026 – Film #25 My watching of this movie had so many things working against it: 1. Godzilla’s first sequel, his first battle with another monster, and the first appearance of Anguirus! Unfortunately, aside from those three hallmarks this is a pretty dull affair. It comes off as a forgettable cash-grab after the somber masterpiece that is the original. There’s no showing of collateral damage during the destruction sequences so a lot of the action feels pretty inconsequential even though the effects are on par with the first film, and there’s a couple really unwelcome scenes of…

Type of antics my toys would go through during playtime. I was advised to just skip this and enjoy other films in this era, but I said nah, it can’t be that bad. And well, it’s definitely a product of it’s time. Is it rushed? Yes, is it longer than it needs to be? Yes, did anguirus dying mid movie impact the rest of the film and make it feel slow and overall just unnecessary? Also yes. I get that…
-
I
Cool sequel but removes the “gozilla as a tragic force of nature” trope. The human story is still moving but the monster scenes were sped up, which was weird
-
I
This movie sucks, the only decent things about it is that it gave us Anguirus (even though you could remove him from the movie and the plot wouldn’t change) and the main theme is pretty good. Other than that it is a sad, bad movie
1 -
C
Collectively we may have been too harsh on Godzilla raids again. It’s fun, genuinely conversational dialog give a bit of tonal whiplash to the more serious scenes of the film, but the second act had Toho’s special effects department running on all cylinders. The fight at Osaka castle was great. However the third act feels so rushed and low stakes, to the point the film just kinda ends
-
J
Happy to report that the filmmakers maneuvered the task of lightening the atmosphere with joy. This cozy heartwarming series of events if perfect for all kaiju silliness. Willy: lowkey me and Chanch.

I really liked the random prisoner escape scene that somehow led to Godzilla and Anguirus being attracted by light to Osaka and duking it out

3/10 First time Godzilla fights another kaiju even though I don’t like it a lot it’s still iconic.
-
W
This one isn’t entirely awful, but the plot is really thin and boring which kinda just feels like padding, the message of the original is completely gone and there’s too little godzilla in my opinion. There are some pretty good effects and miniature work here but its few and far between, the battles between godzilla and anguirus are novel, fun and very goofy which is charming but it does kinda take you out of it when it’s clearly just two guys in big rubber suits flailing at each other. The suits themselves are pretty good though.
1 -
G
The kaiju fights in this are pretty entertaining I had it sped up 20% which might have helped it from looking like two dudes in a suit tackling each other. This is def a downgrade from the original but it has some worthwhile parts even if the ending is a bit lackluster. Why they got rid of the banger theme song for this I have no clue.

Never quite reaches the peaks of the original. It isn’t nearly as effective or memorable. For an 81 minute movie, it felt so long. The thinly written characters didn’t bring much impact to the story. And the climax was essentially fighter jets shooting missiles at a mountain for 15 minutes. And I’m almost certain they kept reusing the same shots but it was so bland it’s hard to tell. The only part I genuinely enjoyed was the 10 minute fight…

Film sits an odd kinda stinky spot, it doesn’t have the amazing writing and drama of the first film while also not having the fun bullshit to come later on, it’s kinda boring. The characters are uninteresting the music and cinematography are very uninteresting and generic however, the one saving grace of the movie is the sped up stupid looking battle between Godzilla and Angiras was very funny and made me giggle.

This movie was filmed in merely 6 months right after the release of the first movie and it shows. While it introduced my beloved trope of the fighting kaijus, it’s hardly its best representative, mostly for effects that, while generally on par of the first movie, they aren’t handled nearly as well through the direction. The biggest problem are the characters and the pacing though. The movie kinda plays off its climax very early on and everything else is quite…

-3 out of 5, so much worse than the first in every single way. That said, it was often hilarious to watch and the fight with anguirus was so dumb I loved it.

Pros: • This movie carries over the classic, black and white monster movie feeling the original has, and also feels tonally in line with the original with its more serious take on its story. • Also like the original, this movie’s effects still hold up very well even today with its blend of masking, models, and suitmation to make believable effects. Mixed: • Although I enjoy that there was more effort put into the human characters in this movie, I…

KOBAYASHI…. WE DID IT!!!! Godzilla raids again while it is a good movie it definitely doesn’t have the same kind of charm that the first Godzilla movie has. This film isn’t as dark as the original film intended Godzilla to be. This film focuses more on the recovery after the first Godzilla attack. And this is the first film where Godzilla fights another monster which would continue through the rest of the franchise. Overall Godzilla raids again is good. UP NEXT IS KING KONG VS GODZILLA.

Director of the original Godzilla Ishirō Honda found Godzilla’s infamous “Shie!” victory dance in Invasion of Astro-Monster to be humiliating and a bitter pill to swallow because he believed the Godzilla franchise was meant to be a serious vessel for deeper themes. Now after seeing the second entry in the franchise I wish that it had made the tonal shift far earlier. While the film clearly still tries to retain the serious tone of the original the themes and commentary of…

Godzilla, the bastard spawn of the hydrogen bomb. We’re powerless against Godzilla’s rage. Godzilla raids again is the first to have monster fights i love with godzilla foghting angirus. It has very solid looking destruction and it in general is just a nice looking movie nothing is nearly ad good as the origanal tho even with the kaiju fighting action. The story is fine charicters are fine its a fine movie overall not to overly flawd. Byeeeeeee

Frankly lacks the thematic relevance as well as the simple yet compelling characters of the first one… they couldn’t even give us a Hagiwara!!! They also reuse one explosion sound effect an annoying amount of times. But I do like Kobayashi (Kobayashi x Tsukiwara doomed yaoi) and the Godzilla and Anguirus suits look super cool!!! There’s also one side character with the most insane face card ever recorded. Cheekbones to the gods.

Worse human element than the original, better Anguirus screen time. These pilots STINKK

C
This is totally better than the first one, right?

It’s fun when the model planes crash into the fake mountain
-
S
In the middle of the movie all of the characters just decide to hangout

K
It’s Godzilla Thursday. Good first half and then the whole movie travels to Hokkaido and Godzilla very politely stands next to some mountains waiting for the movie to end

The ending was basically Top Gun Maverick 😂 This is miles worse than the original, had a few good moments, but I didn’t really enjoy this

Godzilla, King of the Films! #2 “Godzilla Raids Again (1955)” is a subpar, but also superb sequel to the original Gojira. This film has a very lacking soundtrack compared to the original, which had an amazing, compelling, and thrilling soundtrack. This film’s plot also is very lackluster and features, well, quite literally nothing. On the other hand, or should I say tail? The new monster introduced in this film, Anguirus, is one of, if not the best kaiju design, behind…

The main story was rather meh. The main character and side characters were fine. It’s a drastic swap from the deep storytelling in the first one, but I can imagine the production was rushed. Anguirus was the epitome of “protect ya neck” and was an interesting fight, very cool dinosaur design. Godzilla also got a lil disrespectful with that post-kill burn which was cool. The American version of the film gets a 2/5 though, as the voiceover made me stop watching and the translators changing his name was dumb too. Also why get rid of such an iconic instrumental?

Anguirus rules. Why hasn’t he been used in the recent American movies? I want to find that lounge singer’s song for my love songs playlist.

O 2º filme do nosso lagartão gigante! Yeeey!

Godzilla fighting another giant creature is awesome. God I hope they make a 3rd one

Godzilla 2 beats the shit out of Anguirus and then there is still 30 DAMN MINUTES LEFT?! Also I couldn’t help but laugh at the two monsters just beating on each-other like it was a god damn boxing ring. I appreciate that this is the introduction to the VS series got Godzilla but damn dude 💀

This was made in less than a year and attempts to recreate the original’s tone in some parts, but it just falls a lil flat. I like Anguirus and how the monsters never shut up. But yeah its a shame they rushed the shit outta this one.

Pretty alright definitely not as good as the first but still charming in its own sort of way, love the inclusion of anguirus even if short lived. Definitely recommend if one wants to see the full series but otherwise there are likely better installments in the franchise.

Godzilla Movie Marathon #2 Not much to say about Godzilla Raids Again beyond the fact that the drop in quality from the first movie is massive. Godzillas first ever rival, Anguiras makes his debut appearance in this film and I have to say the fight between him and Godzilla was my favorite part of this movie. It had a rawness to it that almost felt as if the men in the suits were actively fighting each other. The positive things…

Why was Godzilla so mean to that little Anguirus dude
