An underdiscussed theme of Lynch’s work is performance — not “film acting” but the ritual gussying up our daily interactions, our developed personae, our “bits.” This manifests intriguingly in the way John Merrick is made a spectacle and his lonely personal tragedy coping with that fact; it’s true in the way the nuclear Palmer family tries to hide violence and pain behind the ceremony of suburban harmony; it’s especially true in the Nancy Drew and Hardy Boy wholesomeness with which Jeffrey and Sandy pursue impossible justice; it’s true in the body-switching of Lost Highway; it’s true in the messianic realization of Paul Atreides as a chosen one; it’s even true in the multiple Dales in The Return serving as these…

“I’m trying to tell you so’s you’ll understand how it went. The thing is, I don’t know what was before or after. I don’t know what happened first, and it’s kinda laid a mindfuck on me.” Inland Empire is the most experimental and nonlinear of David Lynch’s already experimental and nonlinear body of work. The fact that the most popular review of it here on LB at the moment is just a question mark says a lot about how accessible it is (i.e. not at all). The easiest way to describe it is as a movie about an actress who takes a role that makes her begin to question and then eventually lose her sense of the difference between performance…

Much as it pains me to admit this, I’ve been rewatching Inland Empire off and on for at least 15 years now and I still come away with the same conclusion I did at age 24: I think this might be David Lynch’s magnum opus, but I don’t love it. There are a lot of things I do love about this film. Laura Dern puts in a towering, commanding performance. The use of digital film is interesting, and I appreciate…

This is a fever dream turned nightmare. What the fuck is going on exactly? The world may never know. Regardless, the closeup camcorder shots are legendary throughout.

A descent into the psyche that wanders through art, life, reality and the imaginary with absolutely no distinction of which is which. A three-hour journey through a maze of memories that just seems to go in circles, becoming more familiar with and increasingly unclear with every new turn. Laura Dern carries the weight of this psychological unravelling with an incredible breadth of emotions, delivering some fantastic monologues along the way, keeping the audience connected in this strange dreamscape reality. David…

???? Why did Camilla make another appearance does this link Mulholland drive and inland empire together? Honestly the last hour saved me from rating this like 2 stars 😭😭 The camera thing was lowkey clever I forgot that they were shooting the movie but there was so much going on why is there so much meaningless plot 💔💔 Ts did NOT have to be almost three hours long, I feel like they made it that long to make you forget…

there are scenes that are genuinely terrifying without relying on traditional horror and then five minutes later you’re watching something completely absurd. THAT BALANCE IS SO LYNCH. i definitely didn’t love every single part of it 🙁 there were moments where i felt myself drifting because the film becomes so opaque. but there’s something strangely liberating about a movie that refuses to explain itself. i probably understood about 40% of what i watched and enjoyed about 60% of it which feels like a pretty good outcome for david lynch

Now this is heckin lynchian👌 80% sure I “understood” this one. Loved how this was filmed on a camcorder don’t think it would’ve been nearly as suspenseful if it wasn’t. Last 30 minutes contain best editing I’ve ever seen in film lol wish Justin Theroux appeared more in the 2nd half Laura dern was great but bro cleared anytime he was on screen; David Lynch

A three hour long simulation of what it feels like to go insane 😵💫 I can stop humming “Locomotion” now The sheer ambition of this film as work of art is just outstanding. There’s something bittersweet about this being Lynch’s last film; it really does feel like he’s giving us everything that he’s got left, for better and for worse. The cinematography, editing and acting performances are all superb; however, the overall “story” of this film leaves a lot to…

I feel like I had a somewhat decent grasp of what happened in this movie, but there was still a good amount that confused me. So I debated on watching a youtube video that would explain it, until I realized that if David Lynch wanted me to fully understand what was happening, he wouldn’t have made it confusing as shit. So I’ll tell you this, from what i can understand, it’s a damn good movie.

lynch’s filmography folding in on itself ad infinitum until the only discernible thing left is a crusty image of a worried laura dern. feels like an apology from lynch, for turning the abuse millions of women suffer daily into “entertainment” and a payday, turning the criticism present in mulholland drive on himself. the closest we have ever come to capturing hell on camera. perfect.

“Inland Empire” is one of the very few films that pop into my head every couple of days. it’s a crime that Laura Dern didn’t win any awards for this role. this movie is a genuinely incredible work of art. “Damn… it sounds like dialogue from our script!”

One of my least favourite Lynch films, but still great. It’s just a little too inscrutable and unfocused at times, repeated viewings haven’t helped me unravel it completely. It’s also pretty ugly in comparison to everything else he’s done. When it hits, though, my god. So intense, creepy, dare I say outright scary? The sound design and nightmare logic is often Lynch at his most terrifying, and I feel like locking in and seeing this in a cinema would make all the difference. Laura Dern is incredible, of course. Demasiado cine, para mi gusto. No hay un ritmo fijo y te bombardean de información diferente cada instante. Hubo escenas en la que me dio un buen de risa, me gustó la experiencia. También la escenografía es un 10/10, me recuerda mucho a silent hill.

i’m maybe a third through this and i just want to say this is absolute lynchslop. there are interesting ideas, concepts and feelings played with here they just are not the most entertaining to look at if not in super specific cases. (outdoor shots suffer hard) the filming method idea was super cool but really cute this films watch-ability in half at minimum. i also think this is easily the worst acting examples i’ve seen in a lynch film. i haven’t seen dune or some of the other lesser well rated ones but this really let me down.

might be crazy to say (and note that i haven’t seen the elephant man or fire walk with me yet) but this is now my favorite David Lynch movie, it’s such a wild, unapologetic deep dive into pure interpretive surrealist horror, which ofc Mr Lynch is very known for, but this is the ultimate crux of it, which makes it such an important film in his career and imo one of the most important films of the 2000s

I knew this film would be the most difficult of Lynch’s to watch. At the beginning, I was trying to logic my way through everything. Halfway through, I was exhausted and starting to hate the film. I wanted to turn it off, but I decided that I should finish it. By the end, I…loved? It. I can’t stop thinking about a few specific scenes and images. I can’t stop thinking about how it made me feel.

Proof that someone’s favourite director could take a shit on the camera and they’d still praise it. I’d rather watch paint dry for 3 hours than seeing the ridiculous close-ups and nonsensical plot this film offered. “It’s just not for you”… I bet if it was directed by anyone else you would also rate this 1 star, it’s that shit.

what am i even meant to say? clearly lynch reckoning with the same themes as mulholland drive except he decides to throw in three or four of the scariest things i think i’ve ever seen in film??? there’s imagery here that is gonna stick with me for as long as my brain works still, in the chaos of inland empire there’s a clear emotional line through it all, even if you’re barely making sense of what’s on screen. like some of lynch’s…

Respectfully, what the fuck. Very much left in a haze after watching this, which is the most appropriate state to be in after watching any David Lynch movie. My faced looked like Laura Dern’s confused face the whole time lol No clue what to make of this or how to interpret it, all I know is that it’s a living nightmare and that he put Laura through the wringer

I saw this a few months ago and like must have repressed the memory. This was heavy. I think i have been really fascinated by the notion that once david lynch committed to not compromising his artistic vision post dune, he also zeroed in on exploring various forms of pain thru his works. One of the most bizarre movies I’ve ever set eyes on (very complimentary). There’s maybe a half-hour lull in the first or second act that’s a bit tough to get through, but otherwise, it’s Lynch firing on all cylinders, at his least disciplined, and I felt so much the better for it. This movie is peerless; I adore it. And I hope to never see it again. One of those.
