“Do you own a video camera?” “No. Fred hates them.” “I like to remember things my own way.” “What do you mean by that?” “How I remembered them. Not necessarily the way they happened.” 50 years before David Lynch made one of the most hostile and repressed horror neo-noirs of all time, Robert Aldrich set a clear precedent and inspiration for him when he confrontationally adapted Mickey Spillane’s Kiss Me Deadly. Deliberately taking well-known tropes and images of the genre and leaning full-throttle into their perverse and corrupt implications; their ugliest most disturbing foundational tendencies. Loading them with strange, ominous atmosphere and piles of corpses in the rearview mirror until what’s on screen resembled both a half-remembered, unstable memory of…

The opening titles are sick…. the music rules…. this kicks ass I’m so glad I watched it….. patricia arquette is so awesome in this like she is in everything but I’m sorry she’s so hot in this movie she’s like the hottest girl I’ve ever seen in my whole life it wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t make this review mostly about that

The film gave me a kind of horror I’ve never experienced before an explosion in my brain trying to understand it. Yet it was an exceptional, truly unique experience. What a terrible nightmare—

‘I think there’s no such thing as bad coincidence’ It’s a very straightforward movie. You make your own interaction and that’s how it is with Lynch movies — the material is there and you give meaning. Getting most context clues from Renée / Alice — the main female character. A soft spoken seductive woman, Renée appears to be the main love interest of Fred. – A sexual relationship with Fred that turns sour when Fred is overcome with jealousy and…

“We’ve met before, haven’t we?” Im unsure on this. There’s a 5 star movie in here, but there’s a lot of not 5 star movie here. I was very hooked at the beginning and slowly lost that feeling. The beginning being so engaging and strange really did it for me, but after he goes to prison… I don’t think the movie returns to much of a captivating feel. There’s a lot artistic shots that are great to look at and…

I feel some pressure to adore this for film bro cred, and, man, it’s certainly worth a watch. I may have had certain elements spoiled over the years, so while this was incredibly suspenseful — and I share a common reaction in not getting it — I wasn’t having a blast getting my brain scrambled, as I usually do. But I look forward to reading more about whatever I watched tomorrow. While it doesn’t quite feel ahead of its time stylistically, I am sure the average goateed 1997 moviegoer was similarly not as quick to unravel the concepts presented here.

Probably the horniest and grotesque effort in Lynch’s catalogue. Sitting through this was akin to watching someone else’s nightmare unfold before your very eyes. I’m going to be haunted by this one for quite some time.

my problem with talking about lynch’s films it’s that it would mean adjusting it to one order/structure althought all parts lead to variable but working and rational (in storytelling terms) orders, leading to one only certain story of all resulting ones. i’ll only say: beware of nail polish

“I like to remember things my own way.” “How I remembered them. Not necessarily the way they happened.” I don’t think anyone can ever be better at encapsulating the feelings of dreams and nightmares like Lynch did.

“Shit, that wife killer’s looking pretty fucked up!” “Which one?” (Laughter) Fellas, when you cum too quick and she pats you on the back and tells you it’s ok like you’re a kid who peed the bed… make it easy on yourself, just move into a motel room and call a divorce lawyer; it’s over. Much as in Twin Peaks, evil can only take root in those already weakened by desire, jealousy, insecurity, lust. Those who covet. So, men.

A nightmare in film form. It’s no coincidence that the protagonist of this film is a jazz musician; it feels improvisational, like neither the audience nor even the film truly knows what will come next. I kind of felt like I understood what was happening throughout the film, but then looking back I can’t even pretend that I understood the meaning of what I just watched. From what I gathered this is a story of insanity, paranoia, loss of identity,…

It is not my custom to go where I am not wanted. Genuinely terrifying. This really feels like Lynch pulling back the curtain and letting us know how he feels about celebrity, persona, fear, and filmmaking itself. Lynch’s characters feel believable because he believed in them and felt responsible for them in some way and that really comes through in Robert Blake’s character. To me feels like a reflection of his own feelings of responsibility (and even guilt) to his…
