Synopsis

Jeremiah Ecks, an FBI agent, realizes that he must join with his lifelong enemy, Agent Sever, a rogue DIA agent with whom he is in mortal combat, in order to defeat a common enemy. That enemy has developed a "micro-device" that can be injected into victims in order to kill them at will.

“My daughter wanted to know why you look so sad. I told her it’s because you just got beat up by a girl.” Former FBI agent Jeremiah Ecks (Antonio Banderas) is recruited by his old boss, Julio Martin (Migual Sandoval), for a special task force. Martin promises Ecks information on the whereabouts of his wife, who Ecks assumes is deceased, when he rescues the DIA director’s son, who was kidnapped by a rogue undercover operative, ex-DIA agent Sever (Lucy Liu) … Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever is an action thriller film directed by Wych Kaosayananda. A box office bomb, Kaosayananda’s movie is regarded as one of the worst ever made, and not only holds a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score, but from…

If you have a $70M budget and seemingly every gun from Call of Duty and you still can’t make any scene in your movie fun or exciting, maybe you should take the next ten years off. Oh… that’s what this director did.

I like to think I’m sort of an Ecks on the streets and a Sever in the sheets. Anyway, one star, and that only because there’s a pretty bitchin’ motorcycle chase that ends with a cool stunt.

This movie realized it didn’t have an interesting enough plot so they tried to fix it by exploding a car every 5 minutes to try to keep people interested and honestly for me….. low key it worked. But they already had me sold by having Lucy Liu with a gun.

I was gearing up to have a fun time with Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever but it, unfortunately, just turned out to be a painfully incoherent and boring mess without any hint of sanity or irony. It’s startlingly inept without a hint of wit, coherence, style, or originality chasing the success of The Matrix but with the skill and technical prowess of Battlefield Earth. The subtitle doesn’t even make sense given they team-up but it takes the movie and the audience a long time to figure that out in between the snooze-inducing mayhem and the overabundance of clichés.

Maybe Roger Ebert had it right when he gave this a half-star, maybe Wikipedia had it right when it included it on the List of films considered the worst, maybe RottenTomatoes had it right when it has a 0% from critics, and maybe LB user louferrigno had it right when he put it on The Anti-Letterboxd 250. For me? It has Lucy Liu and Antonio Banderas fighting each other for ninety minutes and zero chemistry. (Also for some reason I thought this movie would be about them teaming up, completely oblivious to the “vs.” in the title. Oh well, that didn’t hurt the experience since nothing in it made any sense anyways.)

Finally, the ultimate crossover, the iconic Ecks and Sever going head-to-head! What’s that? You’ve never heard of them? Yeah, me neither. The Battlefield Earth of action-thrillers? Maybe a pretty apt comparison considering the same production company was responsible for both. It’s no secret this thing is particularly infamous, for the sole reason of being the all-time worst received film on Rotten Tomatoes (0% with over 100 reviews!). I’m not quite sure if it deserves that, but it most certainly isn’t good. A insidiously dumb shoot-em-up that’s just as inane as it’s questionable title. So FBI agent Jeremiah Ecks (Antonio Banderas) is brought out of retirement to investigate the disappearance of Michael, the son of DIA director Robert Gant. He discovers…

This thing’s got a bad rap, but up until the last 10 minutes or so my only complaints were 2 big missed opportunities, specifically, not having head goon Ray Park fight anyone, and not including a scene where Lucy Liu beats the bejeezus out of Gregg Henry again, à la Payback. But then Park took off his jacket (revealing a very smart turtleneck) and threw a bunch of spinning kicks, so I’m left with just the one gripe, easily forgivable, anyway, what with the movie being a constant barrage of Darude and Liu blasting machine guns in slow motion and Crystal Method and Antonio Banderas sliding on top of an overturned bus, etc. This is best described as how a…

Ballistic: Ecks Vs Sever is one of the most fascinating boondoggles of Hollywood action cinema; one captivated me ever since it came out in 2002. From the unwieldy title that does the exact opposite of “rolling off the tongue”, a script that had been in development since 1986, that the first tie-in Game Boy game came out 10 months(!) before the film itself and made people think the movie was an adaptation, or how the studio marketed like they thought audiences were clamouring for a showdown between Antonio Banderas and Lucy Liu like it was the De Niro/Pacino pairing of Heat. I remember doing a double-take the first time I saw the poster, “Wait? Who the hell are Ecks and…

“Directed by Kaos.” This is perhaps the first time in film history that a director’s onscreen credit was also an accurate review of his movie. Still: Not as bad as I expected! More in The IMDB.O. List.

Hype moments and aura. Least believable part of the movie is the reveal that Antonio Banderas’ character’s name is supposed to be Jeremy.

I excitedly loaded this up so that I could watch Sandrine Holt in what I assumed would be another thankless supporting role wherein she still outclasses everyone else, but little did I know that in perhaps the apotheosis of this phenomenon B:EvS was shredded in post and her entire character was cut. all you see is three seconds of her in profile at the edge of the screen during a flashback. even so she is stunning. not much else to…

i just found out this is considered one of the worst films ever made and has the lowest rotten tomatoes score ever?? look, objectively this was shit, but so jokes. i fear they just don’t make these shitty, pointless action films anymore. i was obsessed with the constant slow mo explosions and the constant shooting at each other. also my mum’s old karate teacher is in this ???

People have different criteria for the worst movie they’ve ever seen. In my case, this is the worst movie I’ve ever seen because it is like a void of nothingness and boredom. I can barely remember anything about this movie other than the fact it’s ostensibly an action film, yet somehow everything, EVERYTHING about it is lifeless, forgettable, dreary, and boring. There is more nothing in this movie than in those Warhol art films where it’s just a static shot…

This is in need of a serious reevaluation. I feel like shouting that from a mountain top. Are there bad things about it? Sure. It’s clichéd, shallow and Ray Park gives a legitimately awful performance. Is this worthy of being considered one of the worst movies of all time, though? Not by a LONG shot. First things first, it’s an action movie – and the action absolutely rips. It’s packed full of insane stunts, shredding shootouts and pyrotechnics that would…

balltastic : secks vs. ever this is to movies what devil may cry 2 is to games. i don’t think it’s a 0% on RT but it’s pretty bad and boring aside from a few early highlights, everything else is just mind numbing. at least lucy liu is pretty, but that’s like saying water is wet. one of the highlights is the dvd menu being funny, with a minigame that’s just rock paper scissors where there’s a guy talking in one of those plastic microphones you’d get for like $20 back in ’05. that alone was more entertaining than the movie

I recently discovered that my best friend had the same fond memory of this film as I did – we’d both seen it in the theater and left thinking it was “fuck-yeah!” amazing. Only…neither of us had seen it since. Then we discovered that ECKS VS. SEVER is the lowest-rated movie on Rotten Tomatoes. Period. Ever. The highest number of total reviews (117) while still holding a rock bottom splat-tastic rating of 0%. So we had to watch it again,…

I’ve seen many direct to dvd/VHS action movies and most of those are better than this. This makes little to no sense, obviously scenes and plot points missing. The fight choreography is slow at best and there’s more than enough explosions to go around. I know that Banderas and Lui can be good in action movies, I’ve seen it! The soundtrack is comical at points and very early 2000’s. Now having said that, there are some cool stunts and practical effects in this. I’m a huge mark for good stunt work and that was the only thing that kept me engaged.

It was great fun to be invited back onto the Vintertainment podcast, where they pair wine and movies, to talk about a much maligned (too put it mildly) film. Famously the worst reviewed movie in the history of Rotten Tomatoes, as ever RT ratings are next-to-worthless as while Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever is not a good film, it is an entertaining one. This is extremely representative of that moment after the release of The Matrix (1999) and Crouching Tiger, Hidden…

what makes a movie good? a lot of people would posit that it’s good cinematography, or the kinetic energy between one or more of the actors and actresses. some folks would say that it’s the lighting, especially with the modern advent of not having any. maybe, some surmise, this question is dependent on the genre. does the action movie get your blood pumping? do you laugh at the comedy portrayed? are you shocked by the horror of a good slasher…

I ended up watching this last night. It’s actually not very good at all. The only thing that saved it from being a complete waste of time was that the action scenes were all done with practical effects. So it was kind of enjoyable to see stuff happening that you know was done with stunt people and pyrotechnics. Also, it was shot in Vancouver and it’s even set in Vancouver in the movie. They make use of a lot of identifiable locations like the Vancouver library and Stanley Park.

There is nothing wrong with the title “Ballistic: Ecks vs. Sever” that renaming it “Ballistic” would not have solved. Strange that they would choose such an ungainly title when, in fact, the movie is not about Ecks versus Sever but about Ecks and Sever working together against a common enemy–although Ecks, Sever and the audience take a long time to figure that out. The movie is a chaotic mess, overloaded with special effects and explosions, light on continuity, sanity and…
