My kind of movie: small, with the story unfolding across just a few locations, where acting and writing naturally have to do the heavy lifting. John Goodman is monumental, and the tension is constant throughout the entire film. John Goodman and Mary Elizabeth’s performances are great. John was made for this role. The film is almost two separate movies. Psychological head fuck kidnap move and alien invasion movie. Both of which are done pretty well. Shocking tense and thrilling ride from start to finish. Little bit let down towards the end when Mary’s character does some stupid, anti-self-preservation moves which make you shout at the screen. But other than that. Great film.

What an awesome movie, first off great cast all around. John Goodman, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and John Gallager Jr. all keep you deeply invested in a movie thats just three people sitting in a room. That said, obviously the movies got more to it than just sitting around, and trying to figure out how much lying John Goodman was actually doing. The tension stays high throughout the film, and Dan Trachtenburg keeps the atmosphere tense.

The director literally edges us the whole movie. Constantly wondering if John Goodman is crazy or not crazy. And the ending just takes you out of it completely. I almost wish when the girl gets out of the bunker her eyes widen and the movie just ends. And we never know what is going on out in the real world.

It started with a car accident and ended with one. So this movie made me incredibly uncomfortable, which I think was intended. I would personally much rather die because of the toxic air (preferably not too painfully) than be stuck with 2 men I don’t know for YEARS. I was bored at first and may have even slept through some parts but for a “horror” / “thriller” movie, it was neither at all. I think at best this was a claustrophobic mundane alien invasion movie. But the alien action comes at the end. Although mundane, because it was set in a bunker, the actors did a pretty good job at doing the heavy lifting. But i was left with more questions than answers because I didn’t know this was part of a franchise and I apparently watched the second entry whoops. Time to watch this chronologically now I guess?

This was an enjoyable Cloverfield installment from a series that I am otherwise usually disappointed with. There isn’t much “there” there in terms of stakes and enthrall, but there was credible suspense. John Goodman’s performance is solid. This franchise never provides enough alien, but it informs you how to doomsday prep.

So this was all over the place, in the worst way possible. Going deeper into the backstory of the man who took her could’ve helped the story not seem so rushed. We knew little about emmett, and he ended up getting killed off. I was confused when the aliens randomly showed up as well. This film just wasn’t executed well. All the information is just thrown at you. With very little context. But that’s just my opinion.
